JIMMY DICKENS COUNTRY BOY (4 x cd box-set with 64 page book...He has been a mainstay of the Nashville music scene since 1949, but he's one of the least-appreciated artists in the city. Now he's one of the last real country artists who grew up back in the hills and started off singing pure mountain music. When Jimmy came to Nashville, he signed with Columbia, and this set gathers his complete Columbia recordings from 1949 to early 1957. Jimmy not only recorded superb uptempo novelties like Take An Old Cold Tater And Wait, Country Boy, I've Got A Rocket In My Pocket, Hillbilly Fever, A-Sleepin' At The Foot Of The Bed and Out Behind The Barn, but he was also one of the great ballad singers of our time, recording enduring and heartfelt ballads like My Heart's Bouquet and the original version of such country standards as Take Me As I Am Or Let Me Go, Life Turned Her That Way, We Could and Another Bridge To Burn. FLATT AND SCRUGGS 1948 - 1959 (4 x cd box-set with 16 page book...The 5-star reviews for this set showed that Flatt & Scruggs are far from forgotten 25 years after they split up. Here we have their complete Mercury recordings as well as the Columbia recordings from 1950-1959. Of course, this set includes the original version of Foggy Mountain Breakdown, but it's no exaggeration to say that every one of the 112 tracks is a gem. CD No 4 has six unissued radio shows from the late 1950s.... With 40-page book Bear Family's third Don Gibson boxed set covers the period from 1966 to 1969, the final years of his RCA Victor contract. Don was searching for direction, while producing some of the most consistently innovative music of his career. These 4 CDs include all the groundbreaking late Sixties LPs, 'All My Love,' 'The King Of Country Soul,' 'More Country Soul,' 'All Time Country Gold,' and the fabulous duets with Dottie West. REX GRIFFIN THE LAST LETTER (3 x cd box-set with 16 page booklet...Rex Griffin is one of the great tragic figures in country music history. Starting as a disciple of Jimmie Rodgers, he went on to become one of the most gifted and original songwriters in the history of country music and one of its best singers. His brief life, clouded by alcoholism and tuberculosis, is the stuff of legend. His recordings included the original version of his classic weeper The Last Letter--one of the greatest country songs ever written, as well as the original version of his song Everybodyïs Trying To Be My Baby--later recorded by Carl Perkins and The Beatles, and Lovesick Blues--later copied almost note-for-note by Hank Williams. This 3-CD set is a complete edition of Rex Griffin's recordings, made for Decca, King, and World Transcriptions between 1935 and 1946. It also includes Rex's younger brother, Buddy, singing some of Rex's songs on previously unissued acetates, as well as Buddy's rare singles for Dude and Ekko. A biography by Kevin Coffey includes the first in-depth research on the life and death of Rex Griffin. MERLE HAGGARD UNTAMED HAWK (5 x cd box-set plus 52 page book....In 1962 Merle Haggard cut his first session for Tally Records and set about defining his personal vision of country music. STONEWALL JACKSON WATERLOO (4 cd set & large 72 page hardcover book, 124 great gritty & raw country songs from 1957 - 1967, with 7 unissued songs A name like Stonewall Jackson cannot be taken lightly. Seventy years separated the death of the great Confederate general and the birth of the Grand Ole Opry star who shares his name, but they have things in common. For one, both held fast to the old way of doing things. Stonewall Jackson, OUR Stonewall Jackson was a country music fairytale come true. He drove to Nashville from Georgia in October 1956, and was on the Grand Ole Opry just days later, and has been there ever since. Signed to Columbia Records in January 1957, he recorded hardcore stone country music. His first session was held on the day that Sonny James held the top spot in the country charts with Young Love, but Stonewall's music came from a harder, grimmer place. In the book that accompanies this set he tells us about his childhood, in which he was wretchedly poor and frequently abused. You can hear it all in his music. It's not pretty music, but it's raw and commanding. He scored many great country hits, all of them here, including Life To Go, Why I'm Walking, BJ The DeeJay, A Wound Time Can't Erase, Don't Be Angry, and the fabulous original version of I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water (later recorded by Johnny Rivers, Elvis, and many others).All of the alternative country bands pay lip-service to hardcore country music, but THIS is hardcore country...sung and played by the master with his story in his own words.
