ROBERT MITCHUM THAT MAN

(26 trax from USA actor from 1957-1967, incs..The Ballad Of Thunder Road x 2, Gotta Travel On, Tic Tic Tic, Little Ole Wine Drinker Me, You Deserve Each Other, Not Me.
A real double-value package, this includes Mitchum's 1956 calypso set on Capitol -- a classic of Fifties kitsch that attracts big, big bucks from lounge music addicts. Then we've rounded the set out with his only Capitol single, Ballad Of Thunder Road and My Honey's Lovin' Arms, and with his ultra-rare 1960s Monument recordings, including Little Old Wine Drinker Me, and Walker's Woods which showed that Mitchum could really sing. They don't make leading men like Robert Mitchum any more. When was the last time Mel Gibson sung calypsos.

You Deserve Each Other ~ Walker's Woods ~ Wheels (It's Rollin' Time Again) ~ In My Place ~ Ballad Of Thunder Road ~ That Man Right There ~ Little Ole Wine Drinker Me ~ Ricardo's Mountain ~ Sunny ~ Little White Lies ~ Whippoorwill ~ Gotta Travel On ~ My Honey's Lovin' Arms ~ The Ballad Of Thunder Road ~ Jean And Dinah (Yankee Gone) ~ From A Logical Point Of View ~ Not Me ~ What Is This Generation Coming To ~ Tic, Tic, Tic (The Lost Watch) ~ Beauty Is Only Skin Deep ~ I Learn A Merengue, Mama ~ Take Me Down To Lover's Row ~ Mama Looka Boo Boo (Shut You Mouth - Go Away) ~ Coconut Water ~ Matilda, Matilda ~ They Dance All Night)

1958 BRITISH HIT PARADE VOLUME 1 - JANUARY - JUNE

(4 CD set, 101 tracks. Welcome to the seventh edition of 'British Hit Parade' series. Once again we present in chronological order every disc to chart on the hit parade as published in The New Musical Express.

By 1958 other weekly music publications had become well established. The jazz orientated Melody Maker, although still suspicious and overly critical of the new sounds of rock and roll, had, by necessity, embraced the genre and was publishing its own regular pop chart, as was the Record Mirror.

For this 1958 edition we have extracted from both of these charts several records that failed to find a place on the NME chart. Those titles are identified by either (RM) or (MM) after their title in the track listings. As with previous editions we are not including EPs or LPs that were listed on the NME chart. In 1958 there was only one item - Elvis Presley's Jailhouse Rock EP which reached No.18.

As introduced during 1956, the NME chart now contained 30 positions so once again we are presenting 1958 split into two 4-disc sets. This first volume covers the charts of January 4th - June 14th, and the rest of the year can be found on ACQCD7015 Volume Two June - December, which contains the charts from June 21st - December 27th.

1959 BRITISH HIT PARADE VOLUME 1 - JANUARY - JUNE

(4 CD set, 98 tracks. Future Noise wraps up its 1950s Hit Parade series by inviting record producer and music historian Stuart Colman to guide us through the decade's final twelve months. Part 1 of this survey takes us from January to July. In many ways, 1959 was the most intriguing year of the entire period. People were growing ever more confident and the average weekly budget could accommodate such leisure activities as a night out at the Palais and a new wardrobe to go with it. Popular music was very much a priority with jukeboxes being the dominant force in terms of promoting the product. The noble art of Phonebox Stuffing, a vastly different pastime, was being hailed as the latest thing. The objective was quite straightforward, simply to cram as many bodies possible into a standard-size kiosk then register the accomplishment. In February the ebullient mood was soured by the tragic loss of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens in a light plane crash. The repercussions were such that few American acts toured the UK during the year. In March the giant EMI organisation announced their decision to eliminate 78s from the company catalogue, leaving the way clear for the still novel 45 rpm single to take over. The following month, Marty Wilde helped launch the new medium of promo films which in time would become known as pop videos. May saw the debut of the very first Grammy Awards, which were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Comedian Mort Sahl was on hand to introduce the winning acts, including the Kingston Trio, Domenico Modugno and the Champs. Meanwhile, June heralded the arrival on British television screens of the pop pundits' programme, 'Juke Box Jury' chaired by David Jacobs. And in the world of the teen idol the future was looking bright ahead with the arrival of several chart-worthy newcomers including Dion & the Belmonts, Neil Sedaka and Billy Fury.

1959 BRITISH HIT PARADE VOLUME 2 - JULY - DECEMBER

(4 CD set, 102 tracks. Future Noise wraps up its 1950s Hit Parade series by inviting record producer and music historian Stuart Colman to guide us through the decade's final twelve months. Part 2 of this survey takes us from August to December. The highly-diverse selection of chart entries for the final five months of the 1950s ranged from rock 'n' roll and rhythm 'n' blues, to party-time sing-along’s and kiddie novelties. 1959 epitomized the era when music publishers worked their copyrights to the point where various versions of a song could be purchased by the record-buying public. In the instance of 'A Teenager in Love', no less than four variations could be found lingering in different corners of the charts. It wasn't all smooth sailing however, as the record industry found itself blighted by a major print strike in the summer. Not only did the weekly journals such as the Record Mirror, Disc and the Melody Maker disappear from the newsstands, no charts were published during what was an extremely frustrating six-week period. Out on the high street the arrival of the Mini-Minor (selling at less than 500 pounds) served to contemporise the cultural landscape. And in the autumn it was even more when the ribbon was cut by the Minister of Transport, Ernest Marples, on the first section of the M1. Thanks to a string of top-drawer singles, Elvis proved that he was still the King despite being confined to barracks in West Germany. Meanwhile, on the home front, there was strong competition coming from a new breed of British contenders including Cliff Richard, Emile Ford and Adam Faith. The power of the instrumental was steadily being defined by artists such as Duane Eddy, Johnny and the Hurricanes and Sandy Nelson, whilst a more temperate equivalent could be found in the UK via the work of Russ Conway, Joe 'Mr Piano' Henderson and Winifred Atwell. Despite a noticeable lack of modernisation within the realms of radio, the upswing of televised pop and music in movies helped make for a smooth transition into the coming decade.
