HEAVY SUGAR (Over the course of time, Heavy Sugar has been the title of a song, the name of a radio station, an independent movie and the primary ingredient for a rapturous recipe. How fitting it is that this latter description also epitomizes the ingredients that go to make up Heavy Sugar: The Pure Essence of New Orleans R&B. Just think. If the celebrity chefs of New Orleans were to whip up Heavy Sugar until the peaks start to form, then the hostesses on Bourbon Street would go that little bit further and add any flavour necessary to achieve a creamy finish. The musical melting-pot, which helped turn rhythm & blues into rock ‘n’ roll, was always at its most flavoursome in the Crescent City. Issuing forth from a store-front recording facility, the beguiling big beat reached out to a global audience through such artists as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Huey Smith and Lloyd Price. Many lesser-known but equally worthy individuals achieved the same level of sass, Alberta Hall, Ray Washington, Harry Lee, TV Slim to name but a few, although usually with just a couple of releases to show for their troubles. The focal point of the operation centred around a remarkable house-band that assembled day-after-day at Cosimo Matassa's funky studio in the heart of the French Quarter. Date-wise the metronome began ticking towards the end of the '40s, which was when the hip crowd first latched on to rhythm & blues. Rather than being restricted to a minority audience, the music's freewheeling ambience ended up blowing off anyone and everyones' cobwebs. New Orleans came out on top, because its talented musicians were able to put onto record the good time feel that was heard in the clubs. In order to share the joy, Fantastic Voyage has trawled through the city's rich musical repertoire to arrive at 75 highly sought-after recordings. Compiled and annotated by record producer and music historian Stuart Colman, and with many titles on CD for the first time, Heavy Sugar: The Pure Essence of New Orleans R&B could easily end up being one of the releases of 2010. Track listing: CD 1: Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey (Little Richard), Shirley (John Fred & The Playboys), Would You Believe It, I Have A Cold (Huey Smith), Telling Lies (Fats Domino), Someday (You'll Want Me) (Smiley Lewis), Nervous Boogie (Paul Gayten), It Must Be Jelly (Frankie Ford), A-Tisket A-Tasket (Joe Jones), I'm So Blue (Jimmy Beasley), I Know (Ray Washington), Honey, Honey (The Supremes), Ship On A Stormy Sea (Jimmy Clanton), Loud Mouth Annie (Myles & Dupont), That's What I'll Do (Shirley & Lee), Oh, How I Need Your Lovin' (Alberta Hall), Flatfoot Sam (TV Slim (as Oscar Wills)), Look What You're Doing To Me (Professor Longhair), Try Rock And Roll (Bobby Mitchell), I'll Always Be In Love With You (Charles Brown), My Girl Across Town (Lester Robertson), Sweet Sixteen (The Tropicals), I've Got A Girl (Roland Cook), Tic Toc (Lee Allen & His Band), You Call Everybody Darling (The Gondoliers), Dance With Me Henry (Etta James) CD 2: Don't Deceive Me (Fats Domino), Cheatin' Woman (Frankie Ford), Honey Hush (Joe Turner), Diddy-Y-Diddy-O (Roy Brown), Whirlaway (Allen Toussaint), Cha Dooky Doo (Art Neville), Real Gone Party (Ruth & Al), Chickee Wah Wah (Bobby Marchan), There'll Be No Backin' Out (Mickey & Sylvia), That's All I Need To Know (Sam Cooke), Carry On (Jerry Byrne), We Like Birdland (Huey Smith), Creole Alley (Lee Allen & His Band), Mad About You Baby (Richard Berry), Well-O, Well-O, Well-O Baby (Earl King), Malinda (Bobby Mandolph), School Days Are Back Again (Smiley Lewis), Don't Break This Heart Of Mine (Jimmy Beasley), Doin' The Hambone (Little Booker), Rich Woman (Li'l Millet & His Creoles), Teachin' And Preachin' (The Royal Kings), Oh Why? LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT THE BLUES - WEST COAST (California experienced a phenomenal growth in independent recording in the postwar years, after decades of dominance by the major labels. Millions had flocked there during the war years and they needed entertainment. It all began with ‘The GI Sing-sation’, Cecil Gant and his ‘I Wonder’, a blues ballad that caught the public’s imagination. It was also a time for downsizing; the full Johnny Otis Orchestra backed Jimmy Rushing singing ‘Jimmy’s Round The Clock Blues’ but such aggregations quickly broke up and the trend was for small quintets led by the likes of Joe Liggins (‘The Honeydripper’), Saunders King (‘SK Blues’), Buddy Banks (‘Fluffy’s Debut’), Jack McVea (‘Open The Door Richard’) and Roy Milton (‘R.M. Blues’). Charles Brown (‘Drifting Blues’), Jimmy Witherspoon (‘Ain’t Nobody’s Business’) and T-Bone Walker (‘Call It Stormy Monday’) set the fashion for cool, laidback blues, while Gene Phillips (‘Stinkin’ Drunk’), Amos Milburn (‘Chicken Shack Boogie’), Joe Lutcher (‘Rockin’ Boogie’) and Jimmy Liggins (‘Cadillac Boogie’) added a little heat to the pot. After Big Jay McNeely’s ‘The Deacon’s Hop’ and Wild Bill Moore’s ‘Rock And Roll’, honking sax instrumentals became a major sales incentive. The market was crowded with pianist/singers like Little Willie Littlefield (‘It’s Midnight’), Ivory Joe Hunter (‘I Almost Lost My Mind’), Jimmy McCracklin (‘Beer Drinkin’ Woman’), Roy Hawkins (‘Why Do Everything Happen To Me’) and a young Ray Charles (‘Late In The Evening Blues’). As the 1950s began, rhythm and blues took centre stage, preparing the ground for the advent of rock’n’roll. Percy Mayfield (‘The River’s Invitation’) remained cool but newcomers like Lloyd Price (‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’), Young John Watson (‘Motorhead Baby’), Willie Mae Thornton (‘Hound Dog’), Etta James (‘The Wallflower’) and Linda Hopkins (‘Yes I Know’) sang to a stronger beat. Meanwhile, the blues had not been forgotten, Pee Wee Crayton (‘When It Rains It Pours’), Jimmy Wilson (‘Tin Pan Alley’), James Reed (‘Things Ain’t What They Used To Be’) and Johnny Fuller (‘Roughest Place In Town’) could still stir the emotions. Saxophonists still made the charts but as an indication of what was to come, guitarists like Pete ‘Guitar’ Lewis (‘Louisiana Hop’) and Jimmy Nolen (‘Strollin’ With Nolen’) also found themselves popular. By 1956, the year of Jimmy McCracklin’s ‘Savoy’s Jump’, rock’n’roll had knocked down the door. Public taste was changing and within a couple of years the music celebrated here was old-fashioned and passed by. Track listing: cd 1: Mean Old World (T-Bone Walker), SK Blues (Part 1) (Saunders King), I Wonder (Cecil Gant), My Baby's Blues (The Blues Man (George Vann)), The Honeydripper (Part 1) (Joe Liggins), Drifting Blues (Charles Brown), Jimmy's Round The Clock Blues (Johnny Otis Orchestra (vocal Jimmy Rushing)), Shipyard Woman (Jim Wynn's Bobalibans), Everything Will Be All Right (Johnny Alston Orchestra), When The Sun Goes Down (Alton Redd), Fluffy's Debut (Buddy Banks Sextet), Groovy Blues (Camille Howard with Roy Milton & His Solid Senders), RM Blues (Roy Milton), My Gal's A Jockey (Big Joe Turner), Crying Blues (Lowell Fulson), Stinkin' Drunk (Gene Phillips), Open The Door Richard (Jack McVea's All Stars), Be Ba Ba Le Ba Boogie (Helen Humes), Rockin' Boogie (Joe Lutcher), Call It Stormy Monday (T-Bone Walker), Jackson's Boogie (Little Willie Jackson), I Didn't Like It The First Time (Julia Lee), Ain't Nobody's Business (Part 1) (Jimmy Witherspoon), Chicken Shack Boogie (Amos Milburn), Move Your Hand Baby (Crown Prince Waterford) cd 2: Cadillac Boogie (Jimmy Liggins), Fat Meat ‘N Greens (Edgar Hayes), Let 'Em Roll Blues (King Perry Orchestra), Bowlegged Boogie (Vivianne Green), The Deacon's Hop (Big Jay McNeely), Rock And Roll (Wild Bill Moore), Drafting Blues (Floyd Dixon), It's Midnight (No Place To Go) (Little Willie Littlefield), Walkin' Blues (Johnny Moore's Three Blazers), I Almost Lost My Mind (Ivory Joe Hunter), Double Crossing Blues (Johnny Otis Quintet & The Robins (vocal Little Esther)), Why Do Everything Happen To Me (Roy Hawkins), Beer Drinkin' Woman (Jimmy McCracklin), Safronia B (Calvin Boze & His All-Stars), Everything's Gonna Be Alright (King Perry & His Pied Pipers), Glamor Girl (T-Bone Walker), Late In The Evening Blues (Ray Charles), Million Dollar Secret (Helen Humes), Please Send Me Someone To Love (Percy Mayfield), Black Night (Charles Brown), Every Day I Have The Blues (Lowell Fulson), The Thrill Is Gone (Roy Hawkins), I Got Loaded (Peppermint Harris), ‘T-99' Blues (Jimmy Nelson), The Walkin' Blues (Fluffy Hunter) cd 3: When It Rains It Pours (Pee Wee Crayton), Louisiana Hop (Pete 'Guitar' Lewis), Better Beware (Esther Phillips (as Little Esther)), The River's Invitation (Percy Mayfield), Lawdy Miss Clawdy (Lloyd Price), Wailin' Daddy (Mabel Scott), Call Operator 210 (Johnny Otis & Mel Walker), Hound Dog (Willie Mae Thornton), KC Lovin' (Little Willie Littlefield), Let Me Go Home Whiskey (Amos Milburn), Jay's Blues (Part 1) (Jimmy Witherspoon), Yes I Know (Linda Hayes), Motorhead Baby (Young John Watson), Tin Pan Alley (Jimmy Wilson), The Honey Jump (Part 1) (Oscar McLollie), Cry Baby Cry (Effie Smith), Strugglin' Blues (T-Bone Walker), Things Ain't What They Used To Be (James Reed), I Ain't Drunk (Jimmy Liggins), Something's Goin' On In My Room (Daddy Cleanhead), Roughest Place In Town (Johnny Fuller), The Wallflower (Etta James), Cadillac Funeral (Peppermint Harris), Strollin' With Nolen (Jimmy Nolen), Savoy's Jump (Jimmy McCracklin) U.K FANTASTIC VOYAGE Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

STEPPIN' STONE - THE SOUND OF MEMPHIS / XL STORY VOLUME 3 (The third volume of our successful series digging into the Memphis production powerhouse Sounds Of Memphis and its XL label. Our earlier volumes threw light on the studio's incredible southern soul legacy and the strength of music that was laid down. The third volume digs deeper and is made up of mainly unreleased masters but all of unerringly high quality. The discoveries are incredible, with the front ranking being two numbers by Willie Walker. Despite being recorded as demos they are as good as any single that ever made it to vinyl. Equally, recordings by Willie Bollinger, the awesome Otis Wheat and Art Jerry Miller are fantastic. All artists with a very low profile but on the aural evidence they deserved to be much better known. We feature two more cuts from George Jackson, including a brilliant alternate vocal to 'How Can I Get Next To You' and the previously unheard 'Love Trying To Come'. We also have two wonderful pieces by producer Dan Greer, whose voice is the height of soulfulness, plus work from the Minits, whose recordings at Sounds Of Memphis never fail to impress. We take the story into the 80s with a couple of recordings from Tekelia and Erma Shaw, showing that Sounds Of Memphis continued to produce soulful gems into that decade. Extensive notes and rare photos complete this fantastic package. Track listing: 1. IF YOU NEVER SEE ME - Willie Walker, 2. I WON'T HAVE TO CRY NO MORE - William Bollinger, 3. SATURDAY IN THE PARK - Jacksonians, 4. HOOK LINE & SINKER - Minits, 5. HOW CAN I GET NEXT TO YOU (ALT VOX) - George Jackson, 6. I'M YOUR SLAVE - Otis Wheat, 7. YOU'RE SLIPPING AWAY - Dan Greer, 8. RARE WEST COAST JUMP 'n' JIVE (4 CD set. This collection has multiple purposes, the most important of which is, of course, entertainment. Here are 101 prime examples of (mainly) late 40s Jump, Jive and Boogie, many on CD for the first time. Most of the pianists were inspired by the late 30s explosion of Boogie Woogie and the influence of artists like Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. The vocals in the main take their lead from the phenomenal popularity of Louis Jordan and his Tympany Five. The recordings of the Liggins brothers, Joe and Jimmy, Roy Milton and Calvin Boze, none new to CD, are the most commercially successful of the small band recordings that flooded the juke box market in Jordan's wake. RARE BLUES AND SOUL FROM NASHVILLE - THE 1960s - VOLUME 2 (Nashville has always been known as the home of modern country music, but the Music City earned its nickname because it was a place where all types of music were performed and recorded. Most people are surprised to learn that a lot of Blues and Soul Music was recorded and/or released by independent labels in Nashville. Artists like B.B. King, Wynonie Harris, Big Joe Williams, Smokey Hogg, St. Louis Jimmy Oden, Joe Tex, Joe Simon, Cecil Gant, Betty LaVette, Slim Harpo, Lazy Lester, Roscoe Shelton and Lightning Slim recorded for Nashville record companies during the heyday of the independent labels (1940s-1970s). This compilation features some of the lesser known blues and soul artists who recorded for small labels there in the 1960s. That's not to say that these recordings are in any way of lesser quality, but because they were recorded for small companies they didn't get the exposure they deserved. These records are all prized by collectors and several bring hundreds of dollars on the rare vinyl market. The records these little companies made, however, just continued to grow in stature over the years, and the recordings featured on this compilation are an important chapter in the ever evolving story of Nashville....Music City USA Track listing: 1. Cornell Blakely - Don't Do It,2. Cornell Blakely - You Broke My Heart,3. Cornell Blakely - I Want My Share,4. Cornell Blakely - You Ain't Gonna Find,5. Cornell Blakely - Who Knows,6. J.J.
