U.K ACE Label: GREAT GOOGLY MOO

(24 gems of wisdom calculated to expand the mind while causing the brain to shut down.

Another collection of totally crazed tracks, designed at the same time to make the listener move uncontrollably, to follow up on 2003's very successful 'Great Googa Mooga'. It's taken us that long, as we had to wait for our compiler to re-emerge from the sanitorium after the first effort. People are still talking about our first volume, and some people think that a second volume already exists!

This time we've tried to avoid the more obvious, like the wonderful doo wop group music that perhaps dominated the first volume, and we've wandered into the more crazed area of sixties insanity, while presenting plenty of lunacy from the first era of rock 'n' roll.

You're going to love this set we are calling 'Great Googly Moo'… and then you're going to run away screaming. What us - worry?

U.K ACE Label: TOAST OF THE COAST - 1950s R&B FROM DOLPHIN'S OF HOLLWOOD VOLUME 2

(24 original cool blues & hot jump, mostly un-issued masters. Ace's ongoing acquisition of some of the very best West Coast 1950s R&B catalogues has yielded some stellar compilations for fans of the genre in the past, and there's plenty more to look forward to in 2009 and beyond.

We kick off the year with a second multi-artist set drawn from the tapes and acetates that came as part of the purchase of the catalogues that were originally owned and operated by Los Angeles R&B entrepreneur, John Dolphin.

Owner of the most prominent R&B record shop on the West Coast, Dolphin was inevitably a magnet for some of the best Los Angeles talent of the early 1950s and he, like all of the local R&B producers, always recorded far more than he could actually find time, space and money to release. Thus it is that most of the repertoire on The Toast Of The Coast has never been issued before. It may have taken over half a century, but no R&B fan will dispute that it's been worth the wait.

This heady brew of jumpin' R&B and cool blues offers stellar names like Pee Wee Crayton, Jimmy Witherspoon, Peppermint Harris and Memphis Slim, cult heroes such as Erwin Big Boy Groves, moonlighting doo wopper Vernon Anders aka Vernon Greene of the Medallions and one or two mystery artists whose names may be lost in the mists of time, but whose talent remains apparent and abundant. The source material is in remarkable shape considering its age and the conditions it was stored under for many years, and the sublime remastering puts the listener on the studio floor with the musicians.

So confident is Ace that this will be as well received as the first volume that we have already started assembling a third one for release in 2010.

(The first of several planned volumes that will revisit the catalogue of the late R&B entrepreneur John Dolphin concentrates on rare and unissued material that he produced for the first of his many record labels, Recorded In Hollywood, in the early 1950s.

- All tracks are taken from new transfers of John Dolphin's original master tapes, with the kind of sound quality that puts the listener in the studio with the musicians.
- With sumptuous 'period' illustrations and notes by genre and era expert Billy Vera, this is a package that no lover of small group 1950s R&B will be able to resist.

U.K ACE Label: THE FRISCO RECORDS STORY – VARIOUS ARTISTS

(During the early 1960s, the New Orleans record scene was red hot. Among the unforgettable hits streaming out of Cosimo Matassa's funky recording studio on Governor Nicholls Street were Walking To New Orleans by Fats Domino, Mother-In-Law by Ernie K-Doe, Ooh Poo Pah Doo by Jessie Hill, Do-Re-Mi by Lee Dorsey and But I Do by Clarence Henry. In New Orleans itself, you can add to this list of perennial favourites Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye and Loan Me A Handkerchief by Danny White, and Men Of War by the Rouzan Sisters from the Frisco label. The Danny White records sold in excess of 100,000 each in New Orleans and along the Gulf coast, but hardly a box elsewhere. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye was pure gold, and or it should have been. A bitter-sweet ballad of betrayed love written by Al Reed, it was a natural hit. But Frisco, like many indie labels before and since, just did not have the resources to handle a national hit, and it was something of a mistake to place national distribution with another small organisation, Arlen Records of Philadelphia. And so a major hit was lost. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye should have had the same success as the later, similarly ethereal, Tell It Like It Is by Aaron Neville. Now at last, we are putting the record straight by releasing not only the original 45 of Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye, but also a stereo out-take with Danny advertising an upcoming gig in 1963 at Harlem's Rockland Palace. Frisco Records was formed in 1962 by chicken restaurateur Connie LaRocca and disc jockey Hal Atkins, right in the midst of all those seeming never-ending New Orleans R&B hits. LaRocca and Atkins must have been impressed by the hit strike rate of other local independent labels such as Ric/Ron, Minit/Instant and AFO. During its lifespan of some four years, Frisco released 20 singles featuring Danny White, Wanda Rouzan and the Rouzan Sisters, Willie West (later lead vocalist with The Meters), Porgy Jones & the Polka Dots, and Al Adams (actually label co-owner Hal Atkins). Most of the sessions were produced at Cosimo's famous studio with all-star session men such as Art Neville, Dr. John, Alvin Robinson and Smokey Johnson. The chief musical director was Wardell Querzerque, who masterminded later hits such as Barefootin' by Robert Parker and Groove Me by King Floyd. The band sound is big and fat with that irresistible second-line beat. A notable thing about the Frisco recordings is the quality of the songwriting from the pens of the highly respected Al Reed and Earl King. Not everything was recorded in New Orleans. In 1964 Danny White was sent to the Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee where he was produced by the upcoming team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Can't Do Nothing Without You and My Living Doll come from this session, with accompanists including the Memphis Horns and the Hi Rhythm Section. This high quality material from Frisco, much of it in stereo, has never been reissued in any form, and charts the progression of New Orleans music from classic R&B to early soul. The story is pulled together by noted New Orleans historian Tad Jones. This time out, the Frisco recordings will be heard far and beyond the Crescent City. The Frisco Story is a welcome addition to ACE's growing New Orleans R&B catalogue, spearheaded by the two series, Fats Domino's Imperial Singles and Gumbo Stew (from the AFO label) and not forgetting all those great Specialty releases.

U.K ACE Label: YET MORE MELLOW CATS 'N' KITTENS - HOT RANDB AND COOL BLUES 1945 - 1951

- The fourth and by no means final volume in our popular series once again shows the breadth and depth of quality R&B that Jules Bihari and Modern Records captured on acetate in the years immediately following WWII.
- The odd tick and pop that accompanies some (but by no means all) of these 55-60 year-old sides is more than compensated for by the vibrancy of the music that's represented here.
- As ever the MC&K mixture offers a selection of high-profile R&B heroes and heroines (Jimmy Witherspoon, Johnny Otis, Little Esther, Roy Hawkins etc.) with terminally obscure names that had the talent to go big but didn't have the breaks.
- Once again we are pleased to be able to bring you a considerable number of unissued masters and takes - almost 1/3 of a CD's worth, in fact! - to complement those sides which, for the most part, have never been reissued since their first appearance on 78. And by popular demand, we're delighted to be including the master take, for the first time on an Ace CD, of the cornerstone blues masterpiece that is Roy Hawkins' 'The Thrill Is Gone'.
- Those who have been with us since Volume 1 will need no exhortations whatsoever to buy - and they will be heartened by the news that Volume 5 is already in the works!

Track listing: No Steppin' Down - FELIX GROSS AND HIS ORCHESTRA, The Thrill Is Gone - ROY HAWKINS, Doggone Shame - HERB FISHER TRIO, Around The Clock Blues Part 1 - PEARL TRAYLOR with HOWARD McGHEE'S ORCHESTRA, Jesse Boogie - JESSE PERRY, I'm Just A Country Boy - JIMMY WITHERSPOON, I'm Tellin' You Baby - THE NIC-NACS, Did You Ever Love A Woman? - AL WICHARD AND HIS ALL STAR BAND (Vocal by DUKE HENDERSON), I'm Feeling Fine - JOHNNY ALSTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA (Vocal by JEANNE DEMETZ), Mercy, Mercy - JESSE PERRY WITH HAPPY JOHNSON'S SEXTETTE, I Used To Work In Chicago - THREE BITS OF RHYTHM, If I Be Lucky - JOE 'PAPOOSE' FRITZ, Red Light - JOHNNY ALSTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA (Vocals by JEANNE DEMETZ AND ALTON REDD), Hambone Blues - EDNA BROUGHTON, They Call It the Blues - JIMMY GRISSOM with BUDDY FLOYD'S ORCHESTRA, We're In Love - THE EBONAIRES, I Ain't No Fool - GEECHIE SMITH, Airport Blues - WALTER ROBERTS, I Got A Guy - JOHNNY OTIS AND HIS ORCHESTRA (Vocal by LITTLE ESTHER), Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is - LOUIS BARNETT AND HIS BOPPERS (Vocal by JASPER PATTERSON), I've Got That Snakey Feeling - BILLY WILLIAMS, Nursery Rhyme Boogie - HAPPY JOHNSON AND HIS JIVE FIVE, Around The Clock Blues Part 2 - PEARL TRAYLOR with HOWARD McGHEE'S ORCHESTRA, Cuttin' Out - FELIX GROSS AND HIS ORCHESTRA)

U.K ACE Label: NO JIVE AUTHENTIC SOUTHERN COUNTRY BLUES – VARIOUS ARTISTS

(ACE's reissue series on the Excello label continues apace, and this offering mainly features country blues recordings from rural Tennessee of the 1950s. At the time, these records sold poorly and consequently are amongst the rarest post-war blues anywhere. Very little has been reissued on LP or CD, so this collection comes across as remarkably fresh and strong. The best known artist is Arthur Gunter, whose Excello recording of Baby Let's Play House was an early influence on Elvis Presley. Here we spotlight his favourite country rockers She's Mine All Mine and Honey Babe, both freshly remastered for this CD, and the East Coast blues stylings of first-time-on-CD You Are Doing Me Wrong. Arthur is also lead guitarist on the tracks by the Leap Frogs and his brother Little Al, whose No jive is a cult blues classic. These recordings were cut in Nashville under the auspices of Excello boss ErnieYoung. So, too, were the records by Shy Guy Douglas, Louis Campbell, Slim Hunt and Robert Garrett. A major find is the single by the Dixie Doodlers, described by notewriter Chris Bentley as sounding remarkably like the Memphis Jug Band might have played in the early 1950s. Bentley, one of the most respected British blues writers, comments that the last 4 tracks (all previously unissued) 'will have collectors' palates salivating'. The Chas Dowell sides were recorded in 1963 by producer and harmonica player James Stewart very much in the Jimmy Reed style. And Good Rockin' Bob, possibly with Lonesome Sundown on guitar, takes us from Tennessee into Louisiana with two tough swamp-blues numbers straight from the local juke joints

U.K ACE Label: NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL – BEST OF THE BLUES 1959-68

(The Newport Festival was a buzz with blasts from the past in the early-60s. In his book Baby Let Me Follow You Down Eric Von Schmidt recalled his memories of the festival: I was listening to Mississippi John Hurt sing Spike Driver Blues. It was unreal, John Hurt was dead. Had to be. All the guys on that Harry Smith Anthology were dead. But there was no denying that the man singing so sweet and playing so beautifully was the John Hurt. He had a face - and what a face. He had a hat that he wore like a halo.
John Hurt was tracked down in Avalon, Mississippi-.-Bukka White in Aberdeen, Mississippi-.-Skip James was found in Mississippi's Tunica Hospital while Son House was residing in Rochester, New York. Dick Waterman recalled the scene when Skip James took to the stage in his book Baby Let Me Follow You Down: Skip sat down, and put his guitar on his leg. He set himself down, doing a little finger manipulation with his left hand, then he set his fingers by the sound hole. Sighed and hit the first note of I'd Rather Be the Devil Than Be That Woman's Man. He took that first note up in falsetto all the way, and the hairs on the neck went up, and all up and down my arms, the hairs just went right up. It's such an eerie note. It's almost a wail. It's a cry. There was an audible gasp from the audience.
Other bluesmen weren't so much rediscovered as simply exposed. Mance Lipscomb was a gifted songster and slide guitarist who had never recorded, but who'd also never stopped playing at local functions around Navasota, Texas. Lightin' Hopkins, another Texan had been recording for years when he arrived at Newport. And successful urban bluesmen like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, faced with a diminishing market for blues in the black market, saw the festival as a way to attract a whole new audience.
Performers were paid just $50 to appear at Newport, but careers were made on this main stage. Dick Waterman who became a booking agent and business advisor to many of the rediscovered bluesmen recalled: It's important to remember that the record companies were well represented at the festival. You only had about fifteen minutes to play, but if you performed really well in those few minutes, as you turned from the microphone and left the stage, you just might be greeted by John Hammond of Columbia, or Maynard Solomon of Vanguard, or Jac Holzman of Elektra. There were no lawyers or middlemen involved. The guy who made the decision at the record company was there to make a deal.
Newport provided a profoundly moving look at some of the artists who first taught the world the meaning of the blues. Neither the blues nor popular music would ever again be quite the same.
