U.K ACE Label: DAPPER CATS, GROOVY TUNES & HOT GUITARS – VARIOUS ARTISTS (DIG MASTERS) (ACE's third dip into the vaults of Johnny Otis' Dig label, this time showcasing the fine R & B talent that recorded at his studio during the mid-50s. Blues guitar greats like Johnny Guitar Watson, Jimmy Nolen and Pete Lewis rub shoulders with R&B duos like Tony Allen & Barbara, Jessie & Joyce and singing pianists such as Ray Johnson, Devonia Williams and Richard Lewis. Of note, here, are Jimmy Nolen's Jimmy's Jive, which Ray Topping identifies as a formative influence on the young Otis Rush and unreleased Henry Strogin material. Otis was a barometer for the whole Los Angeles music scene and these sides by dapper cats, groovy tune-smiths and hot guitarists capture the Black Music melting pot that was the West Coast of the 1950s. U.K ACE Label: THE ORIGINAL MEMPHIS BLUES BROTHERS – VARIOUS ARTISTS (The Original Memphis Blues Brothers is an expanded version of the 1989 Ace album (Ace CHAD 265) compiled by Ray Topping. The new version has been compiled by John Broven, with liner notes by me. This CD is a wonderful snapshot of the vibrant early 1950s blues/R&B scene in Memphis, and contains much material not on the vinyl release, as well as hitherto unissued sides. New and fresh information on the artists and music has been gleaned from a specially-conducted interview in March 2000 with Joe Bihari, one of three brothers for whose Modern/RPM/Meteor labels this music was originally recorded. Artists featured on the CD include BB King, with alternate takes of his first two 78 rpm releases for RPM Records-.-these tracks represent early output from the Memphis Recording Service owned and operated by Sam Phillips at 706 Union Avenue, Memphis, and later to be the home of the legendary Sun label. Also to be heard are artists still working as active musicians to this day, but thrusting and ambitious back in 1951/52-.-men such as Rosco Gordon (no duplication with Bootin - The Best Of The RPM Years - Ace CDCHD 694), Ike Turner and the young Bobby Bland, whose vocal style so affected women at Bobby's gigs such as to keep lingerie manufacturers gainfully employed for many years! Bland went on to fashion a lengthy recording career during the 50s and 60s with Duke Records in Houston, in common with another artist who followed the same trail from Tennessee to Texas, Junior Parker. Junior only had one release for Modern Records, but he is accompanied by Matt 'Guitar' Murphy, later to appear in The Blues Brothers movie - life-imitating art! Two other Memphis musicians recorded by the Bihari brothers, but spirited away by arch-hustler Don Robey of Duke Records were Johnny Ace and Earl Forest. Ace was to blow his brains out backstage at the Houston City Auditorium on Christmas Day 1954, but thankfully Earl Forest is still with us and has recently been rediscovered and interviewed. All these artists, most of them now household names of the blues world, made their seminal recordings for the Bihari brothers, and if there is not actually a blood relationship between these giants of the post-war black music scene, there is certainly an affinity of filial proportions. Ace is proud to collect this music together on a CD of tough rockin' blues and R&B from the city on the Mississippi. Full track listing: 01 GOOD LOVIN' Bobby Bland 02 DRIFTING FROM TOWN TO TOWN Bobby Bland 03 DRY UP BABY Bobby Bland 04 CRYING ALL NIGHT LONG Bobby Bland 05 LOVE ME BABY Bobby Bland 06 BAD WOMEN, BAD WHISKEY Little Junior Parker & the Blue Flames 07 YOU'RE MY ANGEL Little Junior Parker 08 SHE CALLS ME DADDY AKA WHOLE HEAP OF MAMA Earl Forest 09 I WRONGED A WOMAN Earl 'Whoopin' & Hollerin Forest 10 I CAN'T FORGIVE YOU Earl 'Whoopin' & Hollerin Forest 11 SAD AND LONELY Earl Forest 12 RUMPUS ROMP (INSTR.) U.K ACE Label: STILL PAYING OUR DUES – VARIOUS ARTISTS (ATLANTIC) (The title of track 21 sums this project up. Al Perkins' swinging slab of Memphis marvellousness, Nothing Is Impossible might well serve as the motto for Kent's long-standing servant of soul, Ady Croasdell, and also for his quest to bring you the greatest dance recordings of the 60s and 70s in the finest possible sound. Having ceaselessly badgered the owners of the Atlantic catalogue for a chance to assemble their best known soul tracks into collections that do much to define the genre they represent, he's at last getting to grips with what they've got in a manner that can only be described as splendid. Having already given us the discotheque-oriented 60s overview that was last month's blockbusting At The Club (CDKEND 168), the erstwhile Harboro' Horace now points your feet a few hundred miles up the motorway with a stack of tracks that have ignited Northern dancefloors for three decades or more. As any long-term soul lovin' fule kno, Still Payin' Our Dues is a well-overdue and very welcome update (and expansion) of Kent's earlier vinyl opus Payin' Our Dues. The extra playing time afforded by the small shiny format gives Ady the chance to assail our ears with even more fingersnappers, floaters and floorshakers from the Atlantic vaults. You won't catch me complaining - and neither should you be when most of these cuts are making their first-ever appearance on compact disc. Many of the sides included first saw UK action at the rightfully legendary Blackpool Mecca, among them Barbara Lynn's Motown clone Take Your Love And Run, The Drifters' You Got To Pay Your Dues and Esther Phillips' slidin' slab of Miami magic Catch Me I'm Falling - all three of which had barely fallen stillborn from the presses (thank you, Bill Millar!) when reassessed and repromoted by discerning Northern chaps like Tony Jebb, the late Les Cokell and Ian Levine. The Mecca crew were also the first to acknowledge the greatness of Bobby Wilson's brilliant Volt mid-pacer Feels Good, and your correspondent shyly admits to introducing Tony and Les to the fingerlickin', fingerclickin' goodness of Wendy Rene's Bar-B-Q during the same period. Other goodies here had already been rediscovered and raved about during the pre-Northern period of the Twisted Wheel, and the other clubs that kept a soul flag flying in the face of psychedelia. Included in this number are Mary Wells' relentless Chicago-Detroit hybrid Can't You See and the Astors' glorious Mayfield homage, Candy. Still more winners came to light when Northern Soul became a national phenomenon, and they came from all sorts of sources including 50s comedy doo woppers the Coasters, former child star and (mostly) purveyor of classy MOR Leslie Uggams, respected 50s/60s pop arranger-pianist Jimmy 'Kokomo' Wisner and future African-American R&B legends the Pointer Sisters. Once the Northern scene opened its arms to the burgeoning disco movement, new releases such as Sister Sledge's New York-recorded, Philly-influenced pounder Love Don't You Go Through No Changes On Me also became acceptable to - and happily accepted by! - the assembled multitudes. Some of these tracks were sold at premium prices virtually from the point of their discovery, some were discovered in 8-records-for-two-quid soul packs, and at least one already-rare and popular title was found on the ceiling of a second hand shop (read Ady's notes for further clarification!) Some of them even made the national charts when Atlantic's UK arm realised their potential, eg Archie Bell's Here I Go Again - a Northern side which was originally popularised by pioneer London DJ Terry Davis at his various London venues, before it found a more natural and predictable home Up North. All have something in common, which makes them as listenable and danceable now as they were when we first heard them, and that's their sheer excellence. This is as true of Tony & Tyrone's 'who needs a tune when you got a beat like this?' thrasher Please Operator as it is of the Soul Brothers Six' gutbucket groover Thank You Baby For Loving Me - surely one of the hardest, funkiest records ever to bear the sobriquet of 'Northern Stomper'. There can surely be few compilations for which the phrase 'All Killer, No Filler' was ever better suited. As some dancin' fool once said, can't dance to these, you got no business havin' feet. He's not included here (maybe next time, Ady?) but as another Atlantic artist, Rex Garvin, once put it I Gotta Go Now, Out On The Floor Full track listing: 01 PLEASE OPERATOR Tony & Tyrone 02 FEELS GOOD Bobby Wilson 03 ANGEL BABY (DON'T YOU EVER LEAVE ME) Darrell Banks 04 YOU GOT TO PAY YOUR DUES The Drifters 05 CATCH ME I'M FALLING Esther Phillips (with the Dixie Flyers) 06 TAKE YOUR LOVE AND RUN Barbara Lynn 07 SEND HIM BACK The Pointer Sisters 08 LOVE DON'T YOU GO THROUGH NO CHANGES ON ME Sister Sledge 09 HERE I GO AGAIN Archie Bell And The Drells 10 THANK YOU BABY FOR LOVING ME Soul Brothers Six 11 CRAZY BABY The Coasters 12 FIREMAN Vala Reegan And The Valarons 13 DON'T YOU EVEN CARE Leslie Uggams 14 BYE BYE BABY Dee Dee Sharp 15 FRANTIC ESCAPE The Innocent Bystanders 16 (I'VE GOT TO FIND) HAPPINESS The Ambassadors 17 CANDY The Astors 18 WHAT CAN A MAN DO Ben E King 19 CAN'T YOU SEE (YOU'RE LOSING ME) Mary Wells 20 BAR-B-Q Wendy Rene 21 NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE Al Perkins 22 CHOPPIN' AROUND Jimmy Wisner 23 BRING YOUR LOVE BACK TO ME Linda Lyndell 24 TODAY'S MAN Mark Putney 25 COMING HOME TO YOU BABY The Crossroads) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

U.K ACE Label: GETTIN' TO ME – VARIOUS ARTISTS (ATLANTIC) (Gettin' To Me is a sensational compilation that checks out so many personal requirements that I shall keep a copy close at hand henceforth. Just reviewing it here evokes a cerebral wanderer's return to mid-60s nights, buffing the tiny dancefloors of the Scene, Marquee, Flamingo and the 100 Club. Such a fine collection of Atlantic treasures deserves a far more descriptive review than time and space allow, so I can't wax lyrical about each individual track and am forced to skip the laser to touch on just a few. If You Can't Be True is Marva Lee's great remake of Gene Chandler's original (the flip of What Now) a superb Curtis Mayfield song and a long-standing favourite with B-side buffs. Other glorious tracks include the falsetto Parliaments' A New Day Begins, the excellent Ben E King/Bert Berns' classic Cry No More and Esther Phillips' show stopper Just Say Goodbye. I can't leave out the Drifters' In The Land Of Make Believe, an inspired combination of Leiber/Stoller production, Gary Sherman arrangement, Bacharach/David song and tortured lead vocal from Rudy Lewis (with assistance from Johnny Moore on the final half that adds extra melodrama). This magical track always transports you somewhere else, an illusion that the team also achieved on Mexican Divorce, Another Night With The Boys and Let The Music Play. It's a mastergroove. If one must single out just one cut as the highlight, the spot must fall to the title track, the long awaited Gettin' To Me. The background story of which goes something like this...Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller produced a session at Bell Studios in New York in February '66 with Atco soul supremo, Ben E King. Though this recording session only yielded two finished songs, they were both superb cuts that, for reasons best known to themselves, Atlantic didn't issue right away. Where's The Girl, a wonderful Leiber/Stoller ballad, was eventually released on the flipside of It's Amazing, a single that flopped in late '68. Mike & Jerry had produced the original recording for Jerry Butler back in '63, when he was between hits, so neither version of this great ballad really got the full recognition it deserves. The second song that was cut that day, Gettin' To Me, stayed in the Atlantic vaults until a disastrous fire in the early 70s destroyed the master, along with most of Atlantic's other great unissued gems. Fortunately for Ady Croasdell (who discovered a metal pressing of this long lost ammonite buried in a West End second hand record shop, circa the tail end of the last century) and consequently the rest of us, the miracle of modern technology has restored this unique record, now released for the first time. Not only has it an unmatched vocal performance from King, it also provides a rare insight to the creative development of Leiber & Stoller during that period. They had tired of their executive roles at Red Bird and wanted to get back to action in the studio. The magic combination of Leiber/Stoller/King, added to the beautiful arrangement by Artie Butler, make Gettin' To Me an ultimate experience and therefore indispensable to your collection. Full track listing: 01 GETTIN' TO ME Ben E King 02 IF YOU CAN'T BE TRUE Marva Lee 03 KEEP ON TALKING James Barnett 04 SLIPPIN' AROUND Art Freeman 05 MY LOVE IS GETTING STRONGER Cliff Nobles 06 SLY GIRL Derek Martin 07 A THOUSAND WONDERS Archie Bell 08 BOTH ENDS AGAINST THE MIDDLE Jackie Moore 09 COME ON BABY AND HURT ME Naomi & Harris 10 FIND ME SOMEBODY Bobby Womack 11 A NEW DAY BEGINS The Parliaments 12 THIS IS THE THANKS I GET Barbara Lynn 13 YOU'LL NEVER CHANGE Betty Lavette 14 ACROSS THE STREET Lenny O'Henry 15 CRY NO MORE Ben E King 16 SUFFERIN' CITY Johnny Copeland 17 GOT TO GET YOU BACK Johnny Newbag 18 WHERE DID I GO WRONG The Embers 19 YOU MY LOVE Tami Lynn 20 LONELY YOU'LL BE Johnnie Mae Matthews & The Wonderettes 21 I'LL BE LOVING YOU Soul Brothers Six 22 THANK YOU JOHN Willie Tee 23 HERE COME THE TEARS Darrell Banks 24 IN THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE The Drifters 25 JUST SAY GOODBYE Esther Phillips) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |
