U.K ACE Label: EDDIE'S HOUSE OF HITS (GOLDBAND RECORDS) – VARIOUS ARTISTS (Ace Records is proud to announce the addition of the legendary Goldband label to its catalogue and launches the relationship with this CD subtitled Eddie's House Of Hits, a retrospective album covering the immensely varied output of Eddie Shuler's Louisiana company. Operating out of Lake Charles, Shuler has been involved with the music business since 1940, initially running Eddie's Music House Store and playing in the hillbilly band The Reveliers. In 1949 he formed Folk Star Records and put out recording by the great cajun artist lry LeJune. In 1952 he set up Goldband Records which, to this day, continues to be a bastion for the musics of downhome Louisiana His biggest hits for Goldband are here - Cleveland Crochet's cajun-rocker Sugar Bee (it charted a No 80 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1961) and Elton Andersen's swamp-pop ballad Secret of Love (No 88 in 1960) - but, musically, of as much interest are the regional hits and near misses. Guitar Jnr's The Crawl (later remade by The Fabulous Thunderbirds), Paper In My Shoe by Boozoo Chavis and Boogie In The Mud by Danny James (who, elsewhere on the set, boldly tackles Albert Collins' Frosty). Jimmy Wilson's Please Accept My Love (later recorded by B B King) is also here, as is the 1959 outing Puppy Love by the very young Dolly Parton. Gene Terry tears it up on the wild rocker Cindy Lou and Rockin Sidney (of My Toot Toot fame) wails the blues on No Future. Cookie & The Cupcakes play swamp pop on the Blue Bayou Shuffle, Ashton Savoy do the Rooster Strut and Pee Wee Kershaw (sounds like Lancashire's answer to the blues but it is actually Doug Kershaw's brother) delivers You're So Fine in his own inimitable cajun-rock style. Cult blues names like Hop Wilson and Juke Boy Bonner belt out Chicken Stuff and Let's Boogie but special mention is reserved for Al Ferrier's rockabilly classic Lets Go Boppin' Tonight which was rescued from the original tape almost on the point of disintegration during the copying stage. The album closes with Phil Phillips' Don't Leave Me and that's just what you won't want to do with this excellent introductory Story of Goldband Records. U.K ACE Label: SHREVEPORT STOMP – RAM RECORDS VOL 1 – VARIOUS ARTISTS (Ram Records was the creation of the late Mira Smith. A multi-talented musician, studio engineer and songwriter, Mira made many fine recordings both of blues and hillbilly artists. Most of them came from her home town of Shreveport, Louisiana but, occasionally, she would record musicians and singers from places further afield. Many of the performances she recorded have remained unissued until today, not because of any deficiency in the recordings or performances, many of which are very fine indeed, simply because Mira worked on an indie label shoestring and had insufficient capital to promote more than a handful of singles a year. An awful lot of good music just stayed in the vaults. With her limited budget, Mira recorded such talent as bluesman Oscar Wills, better known as TV Slim, and his Flat Foot Sam and a young rock'n'roll star Linda Brannon, whose band included a very young guitarist James Burton (later to record and tour with Elvis in the late 60s and 70s). Linda later married country supersession player Jerry Kennedy, who also features on some of the Ram recording sessions. White blues piano player Roy 'Boogie Boy' Perkins was another find - his Drop Top (here in a previously unreleased first take) was Billboard's Pick Of The Week in February 1958 while his rocking Ba-Da gets a general release for the first time (it was only previously available in the 70s as a hard-to-find mail-order item). Sonny Boy Williamson is here with Mailman, Mailman, though this Sonny Boy is neither No.1 nor No.2 but a guy named Jeff Williamson, a tall, thin man with golden hair who found his disc strangely credited to Sonny Boy Williamson. Capturing the melting pot of sounds that were transforming the South of the 50s and early 60s, the music on Ram features the blues as they met country music, rockabilly and western swing and they collided with R&B and cajun as it started to mutate into swamp pop. Heady music from vintage times and volume one is only the beginning! U.K ACE Label: RED RIVER BLUES – VARIOUS ARTISTS (The Ram Series continues with a fine collection of blues and R&B recordings, highlighted by the complete sessions of the late Jeff (Sonny Boy) Williamson - the only known recording of this Louisiana harp player. The tiny Shreveport Ram label was the brainchild of the late Myra Smith who, in the mid-50s, recorded country rockabilly and blues at her tiny handbuilt studio. Myra was also a brilliant guitarist who played old-time Carlton family-style guitar and loved downhome blues. On many of her sessions she would turn the tape machine on and then step out into the studio and play on the sessions. Strapped for money, she was not able to release all her masters on singles and in the 60s she gave up the Ram label to concentrate on publishing and songwriting with her partner, Margaret Lewis. The pair set up operation in Nashville making demos, including the big hit Reconsider Me for Shelby Singleton. This latest volume of the Ram story, Red River Blues, concentrates on the blues and R&B sessions that she produced in the late 50s and early 60s with artists such as Jeff (Sonny Boy) Williamson, TV Slim, Elgie Brown and Vincent Williams. These masters were the fruits of my research at Shreveport several years ago. They add to our knowledge of Shreveport blues, whose history goes back to the early days of blues recording, when the city produced such greats as Leadbelly, the Shreveport Homewreckers and Black Ivory King. The Myra Smith Ram legacy rolls on and her part in the indie story is assured. U.K ACE Label: ACROSS THE TRACKS VOL 2 – VARIOUS ARTISTS (ACE continue run of Nashville R&B CDs with a return visit to the Champion group of labels featuring the productions of Ted Jarrett. Ted was one of the early black independent label producers, and to this day is still hunting for hit records on his T-Jaye label. With the release of the first volume of Across The Tracks (CDCHD 493) he has been accorded belated recognition for his past work by his Nashville home town. In a supplement of The Nashville Banner (28 November 1996), Ted had the front cover picture and story entitled (what else) 'Across The Tracks' with the bye-line Reissue disc showcases Ted Jarrett's role in Nashville's R&B and rock history. Then in the Nashville Scene of 12 December 1996, Daniel Cooper wrote a major article, Scuffling: The Lost History Of Nashville Rhythm & Blues. Cooper noted that only now, all these years later, Nashville's R&B legacy is beginning to gain wider recognition. AVI Records in the US and Ace Records in the UK have been deep into a reissue programme of vintage recordings from the Excello vaults - much of it featuring Music City talent - and Ace also just released the essential Across The Tracks: Nashville R&B and Rock'n'Roll. A superior collection of raw, urban-combo sides from the late 50s and early 60s, the Ace collection especially highlights the production and songwriting of local musician and all-round indie entrepreneur Ted Jarrett. We have commissioned Daniel Cooper to write the notes to this second volume of Across The Tracks (he has also written the notes to our Wail Daddy! and Southern Rhythms with Kid King's Combo, Louis Brooks and Skippy Brooks - both CDs from the Excello label). This time out we feature Nashville doowop from highly collectable groups the Kinglets and Charles Walker & the Daffodils along with the Champion R&B stalwarts Larry Birdsong, Gene Allison and Earl Gaines. The quality blues tracks by Murfreesboro (Al Garner), Ted Jarrett, Cliff Butler and Arthur K Adams are almost impossible to find on the original records, as is the magnificent rockabilly of Chuck Harrod's Crawdad Hole a $1000 single! Yes, the musical quality of Across The Tracks Vol 2 is every bit as high as that of the first volume. U.K ACE Label: VANGUARD – ROOTS OF THE BLUES – VARIOUS ARTISTS (3CD overview of ROOTS OF THE BLUES and Roots of Folk include songs from many of the key performers active during the 1950-60s. The first slip-cased set is sub-divided into three sections - Folk Blues, Delta & Country Blues, Urban Blues - the second into Roots of Folk, Singers & Songwriters, and Folk Blues. However, these divisions tend to be arbitrary and not rigorously enforced. Bluegrass founding father Bill Monroe finds himself filed under Folk Blues in the Roots of the Blues set yet doesn't feature at all in the Roots of Folk. Certainly blues is more heavily favoured in the folk collection at the expense of old timey and bluegrass. Several performances are also duplicated on both compilations. That said, there is a great deal to savour here (as you'd expect from the artists and track listings above). From the archaic Delta stylings of the Father of folk blues Son House to the blue yodelling of the legendary Bill Monroe-.-the protest singing of Buffy Sainte-Marie to the tender introspection of singer-songwriter Eric Andersen. Also, as the beat (and the volume) picks up, there are sounds as diverse as the roaring Chicago blues of the Paul Butterfield Band and the classic chart hit (Walk Right In) by the Rooftop Singers. Roots of the Blues additionally contains five previously unreleased recordings from the 1964 and '65 Newport Folk Festivals. Along with its companion LP Authentic R&B, it introduced British blues far to one of America's greatest regional sounds - the blues and R&B of Louisiana - and to the catalogue of Excello Records. If Authentic R&B had the sides that became much emulated - Slim Harpo's I'm A King Bee (covered by The Rolling Stones), Got Love If You Want It (covered by The Kinks) and I'm A Lover Not A Fighter {covered by The Yardbirds) - then The Real R&B had stuff to more deeply excite the imagination (including Lightnin' Slim's wonderfully moody, echo- laden Wintertime Blues and Arthur Gunter's original Baby Let's Play House, which Elvis covered in his youth). Along the way these Stateside LPs helped launch countless blues collections. So how did it all begin for Excello? Well, the label was launched in August 1952 by Ernie Young in Nashville, Tennesee (as an offshoot to the Nashboro label). With Nashboro as the valuable gospel outlet, Excello was primarily a blues and R&B label, although in the early days there was also a sprinkling of gospel and white country music as well as rockabilly. In its latter years Excello was also an outlet for prime 60s Southern Soul. Essentially, though, Excello remained famous for its pure and unadulterated blues (even the contemporary styles are very downhome). Aimed initially at the black buyers of the American South in the pre-Civil Rights era, the music was pumped out to downhome audiences via the powerful radio transmitters of Radio WLAC in Nashville and its DJs Gene Nobles, John 'R' Richbourg and Bill 'Hoss' Alien. The British R&B boom and the cover versions by the rock groups that invaded America's airwaves in the second pop invasion all helped generate interest back home. Many of the artists on The Real R&B enjoyed frequent appearances at blues festivals and on package tours across the UK, Europe and the USA. In the 1990s, younger British enthusiasts are still bopping away to the Excello blues boogies blasting out at underground 'rocking' clubs and blues festivals. As with our reissue of Authentic R&B (Authentic Excello R&B CDCHD 492) we have added extra tracks to the original LP release (8 in all) and included strong alternate takes of I'm Goin' In The Valley and Wintertime Blues, the original 45 versions of these can be found, respectively, on the equally essential CDs So Long Blues (CDCHD 523) and Rooster Blues/ Bellringer (CDCHD 517 Full track listing: 01 LITTLE QUEEN BEE Slim Harpo 02 I TRIED SO HARD Whispering Smith 03 I'M GOIN' IN THE VALLEY Silas Hogan 04 I'M SO GLAD Leon Austin 05 I HAD A DREAM LAST NIGHT Lonesome Sundown 06 SHE'S MY CRAZY LITTLE BABY Lightnin' Slim 07 I NEED MONEY Slim Harpo 08 GOIN' CRAZY OVER TV Jimmy Anderson 09 DARK CLOUDS ROLLIN' Silas Hogan 10 YOU'RE PLAYIN' HOOKEY Lonesome Sundown 11 STILL RAININ' IN MY HEART Slim Harpo 12 IT'S LOVE BABY Earl Gaines 13 NOTHING IN THIS WORLD Jimmy Anderson 14 BABY LET'S PLAY HOUSE Arthur Gunter 15 WINTERTIME BLUES Lightnin' Slim 16 CRYIN' BLUES Whispering Smith 17 PLEADIN' FOR LOVE Roscoe Shelton 18 WHOA NOW Lazy Lester 19 IT'S YOUR VOODOO WORKING Charles Sheffield 20 ROCKA ME ALL NIGHT LONG Jay Nelson 21 LEAVIN' TENNESSEE Al Garner 22 BABY, KISS ME AGAIN Sweet Clifford 23 CRAZY OVER YOU Roscoe Shelton 24 BABY! U.K ACE Label: UPTOWN, DOWN SOUTH – VARIOUS ARTISTS (EXCELLO) (Uptown, Down South steers away from the usual Southern soul profile of 'Grits, Gravy and Funk' to explore instead the suave, sophisticated sounds that emanated as much from the southern states as those in the north. Drawing on the music recorded for Excello, A-Bet, Mankind and Nasco between the years 1966 to 1974, the CD captures Freddie North singing Just Another Guy (the kind of beat ballad normally associated with Tommy Hunt), The Avons rendering the very Detroit-sounding Since I Met You Baby and the previously unissued I Would If I Could, The Kelly Brothers giving Crystal Blue Persuasion the slick, soul treatment and The Wallace Brothers making a nod in the direction of The Impressions with Thanks A Lot. The big, heavy, brass-driven sound of Frank Howard is featured on Judy and there are classic sides from the likes of Z Z Hill and Roger Hatcher (the latter with the absolute classic dancefloor 'floater' Sweetest Girl In The World). Shirley Brown's exceptionally fine Even If The Signs Are Wrong is an unissued cut from her first recording session, made the year before her ground-breaking Woman To Woman. Full track listing: 01 I'VE GOT TO HOLD BACK Freddie North 02 SWEETEST GIRL IN THE WORLD Roger Hatcher 03 JUDY Frank Howard 04 THAT'S LOVING YOU Percy Wiggins 05 I'M NOT YOUR REGULAR WOMAN Lucille Mathis 06 SINCE I MET YOU BABY The Avons 07 DON'T LET OUR LOVE FADE AWAY Marva Whitney 08 EVEN IF THE SIGNS ARE WRONG Shirley Brown 09 CHILDHOOD DAYS Bobby Powell 10 JUST ANOTHER GUY Freddie North 11 BIGGER AND BETTER The Hytones 12 CRYING DAYS ARE OVER The Kelly Brothers 13 SAVE A FOOLISH MAN Lee Brackett 14 THAT'S MY MAN Marion James 15 NO MORE TEARS Bessie Jones 16 SET YOUR SOUL ON FIRE Jerry Washington 17 OUR LOVE IS GETTING BETTER Z Z Hill 18 CRYSTAL BLUE PERSUASION Kelly Brothers 19 WHAT PRICE FOR LOVE Bennie Shaw 20 THANKS A LOT The Wallace Brothers 21 I WOULD IF I COULD The Avons 22 KEEP ON RUNNING AWAY Bits 'n' Pieces 23 RUNNING AWAY FROM LOVE Skip Mahoney & The Casuals 24 JUST THE OTHER DAY Johnny Truitt) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |
