BOBBY FREEMAN – C'MOM AND S-W-I-M

(As featured in the topless dance clubs of San Francisco's North Beach, 1964's 'C'Mon And Swim' marked a welcome return to the hit parade for local rock'n'roll pioneer, Bobby Freeman. Collected here for the first time are the singer's recordings for the Autumn label which also charts the emergence of a precocious Sly Stone as writer, arranger, and producer on all sides. Bobby Freeman's C'mon & Swim barrelled to the top of the US hit parade in the summer of 1964 at the height of the San Francisco-based topless dancer controversy. After several years of Twist, Watusi and Mashed Potatoes, as well as the recent onslaught of the British Invasion, the American record-buying public would normally have rejected yet another stale dance fad, but the infectious groove of C'mon & Swim and its fresh, vital sound ensured a monster record. It was also a welcome reappearance for the talented Freeman, whose career had ebbed and flowed since his ground-breaking national hit Do You Wanna Dance in 1958. The singer's return to chart status was due in part to the patronage of Tom Donahue and Bob Mitchell, popular SF deejays and owners of the newly-formed Autumn label, who with 'Swim' got a huge hit on almost their very first try.
This is the first time on compact disc for Freeman's classic Autumn LP C'mon And S-W-I-M and indeed the first proper overview of his period at the label. Unlike so many other dance-orientated releases of the period, all of Freeman's Autumn material is strong in both terms of composition and performance. In addition to rockers like Do The Monkey aimed at the discotheque, there are many groovy and intelligent uptown R&B productions, all handled with consummate ease by the versatile singer.
It should come as no surprise that this is due to the overwhelming presence of Sylvester Stewart, aka the young and precocious Sly Stone, as producer, arranger, songwriter and musician on virtually every track. This disc therefore makes a great companion to ACE'S earlier retrospective of Sly's Autumn years, Precious Stone (CDCHD 539). C'mon And S-W-I-M features the complete 1964 album plus all of the great non-LP sides such as Friends, Cross My Heart and Bobby's cool version of Jackie Lee's The Duck. Also included are eight alternate takes and unissued tracks - mostly Sly compositions - that provide a fascinating glimpse into the working relationship between artist and producer. ACE even left in plenty of entertaining studio banter to further illustrate this point. Cognisant of the importance of the 'Swim' years in relation to both his and Sly's careers, Bobby graciously granted a rare in-depth interview for the liner note, which is packed with photos and memorabilia from the Autumn era. But hey, hold on a minute. C'mon And S-W-I-M isn't just a history lesson, it's also a swinging party disc. So come on everybody , come on in, Bobby's gonna show you how to do the Swim..

BOBBY FREEMAN - GIVE MY HEART A BREAK - THE COMPLETE KING RECORDINGS

(18 early 60s New Breed R&B masters from KING label. This perennially popular San Francisco rock'n'roll legend's career has been widely documented on CD, but his early 1960s sessions for King Records have never been anthologised in the CD era - until now.

Recorded in 1960 and 1961, these 18 sides represent an important transitional period in Freeman's career, as he successfully moved from 'Do You Wanna Dance' rocker to 'C'mon And Swim' soul man. King only released four singles on Bobby over a 5-year period - including the hit '(I Do The) Shimmy Shimmy' - plus one LP that duplicated many of the previously released sides (which means that many of our inclusions here have never seen the light of day before).

The recordings here are mostly in the New Breed R&B style and will appeal to both sets of Freeman fans.

The sleeve notes offer Bobby's own recollections of this period in his career, and the wealth of previously unpublished colour photos from the King vaults will have fans of rock 'n' roll photography drooling.

Track listing:
1. PLEASE STAY BY ME, 2. GOOD GOOD LOVIN', 3. WHAT CAN I DO, 4. (I DO THE) SHIMMY SHIMMY, 5. COME TO ME, 6. THERE'S GONNA BE A CHANGE, 7. YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND ME, 8. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, 9. LOWELL FULSON – TRAMP/SOUL

(More from Modern with the two major Lowell Fulsom albums on one CD.Tramp needs no introduction and it gave Lowell Fulsom his biggest hit in early 1967. Cut between '64 and '67 these sides give a real impression of the unique style of Lowell Fulsom, a man who sang the blues with soul and almost created his own category along the way. There is some great guitar picking, fantastic Maxwell Davis arrangements, and a sparse but effective use of horns, all over a rock solid rhythm section. From the late 1940s Fulsom cut for many labels, starting in Oakland and generally remaining on the West Coast throughout the50s, though many sides came out on Checker, the Chess subsidiary. He cut for Kent, the Modern subsidiary in the mid 60s, before moving to Jewel at the end of the decade. Throughout his career he played with a wide variety of other artists, from Ivory Joe Hunter, to Clifton Chenier and gave breaks early on to the likes of Ray Charles and Stanley Turrentine. A highly adaptable musician, he nonetheless never lost sight of his roots in blues.

LOWELL FULSON – THE TRAMP YEARS

(When blues vocal and guitar immortal Lowell Fulson signed with Kent Records in 1964, he was in his forties, with a Hall Of Fame discography already to his credit. He had crafted gems and juke box fixtures like Everyday I Have The Blues, Blue Shadows, Sinner's Prayer, Guitar Shuffle and Reconsider Baby-.-employed Ray Charles and Stanley Turrentine in his road band-.-and been a profound influence on B.B. King, Magic Sam and most of the generation of electric bluesmen who followed him.
His 1964-68 Kent tenure added the dimensions of flexibility and resiliency to his brilliance. After a final straight blues hit with Black Nights, he updated his groove with a shot of funk. The resulting Tramp hit the charts in early 1967, and still echoes around the world via cover versions on recordings (ever since Otis Redding and Carla Thomas jumped on it immediately) and bandstands, and sampling by Cypress Hill, Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince and Prince. When Fulson was done waxing three LPs and a fistful of 45s for Kent, he had demonstrated that his age was a less important number than his chart position.
Ace Records is celebrating the Fulson-Kent alliance with the planned release of three CD compilations. The first release, THE TRAMP YEARS, represents the middle chronologically and the peak commercially. Its twenty-four tracks will appeal to dancers, casual blues fans and even the most seasoned collectors for whom the six previously unissued songs and four extended versions will be new. Kent's failure to issue It Takes Money was a pet peeve of Fulson's-.-listeners can finally hear and judge the song. Along with his standard rhythm section of a second guitarist, bassist and drummer, Fulson is heard in the illustrious company of such west coast blues legends as pianist Lloyd Glenn (who arranged and played on many of his definitive classics), keyboard player and horn arranger Maxwell Davis, songwriting and vocal harmonies by Jimmy McCracklin and even a cameo by George (Harmonica) Smith. The programme is an appealing mix of deep blues, shuffles and the greasy funk grooves that opened a younger set of ears to Fulson, with some lively instrumentals interspersed among the vocals.
The sleeve notes include Fulson's recounting of the circumstances behind an album (and now CD) cover almost as memorable as the music, and his own take on the spelling of his name (Kent used Fulsom). Spelling concerns aside, just file THE TRAMP YEARS under finger popping, foot stomping, world-wise blues and funk - and leave room for the next two CDs in the series!

LOWELL FULSON – BLACK NIGHTS: THE EARLY KENT SESSIONS

(From the opening blast of the brass on the title track Black Nights you know this CD is going to be something special. Here, gathered together for the first time, are Lowell Fulson's early singles for the Kent label of Los Angeles, released between 1964 and 1966. The blues veteran (even back then) was signed to replace Kent's best selling artist B.B. King, who had left for ABC Paramount. Throughout, Lowell is in top form vocally and on guitar, aided by Maxwell Davis' inspiring arrangements. A real bonus is the quality of the songs, the majority of which are written by Fats Washington, who crafted R&B standards such as I'll Be Home and Pledging My Love. It is hard to overestimate the importance of Black Nights, which was one of the last singles to be purchased almost exclusively by the black audience. Its impact betrays the rather meagre chart data: #11 R&B in early 1966 in a 12-week stay, and #91 on the Pop charts. Record man and researcher Donn Fileti owned a record shop at the time and fondly recalls: Black Nights was one of those left-field hits that R&B retailers sold by the box lot to hordes of older customers starved for blues in a soul market dominated by Motown and Atlantic. The over-40 set that clamoured for Lowell Fulson's Kent 45 in our Hackensack, New Jersey shop were all tuned in to WNJR and WWRL where the single scored heavy airplay. Joe Martin's, Kent's Newark distributor, cautiously ordered 'half-a-deal' (500 45s at the usual distributor price of 46 cents each plus 150 free) on Black Nights. This was his initial standing order for every B.B. King 45 churned out monthly from Kent's busy Normandie Avenue plant. Black Nights had considerable legs and sold steadily in R&B locations for weeks after its departure from the national charts. It truly was blues for the brothers.
This compilation is the second in a trilogy of Lowell Fulson's recordings for the Modern Records Group and covers his bluesy period immediately prior to the funkier blues sounds of The Tramp Years (CDCHD 755). The inclusion of the first 10 Kent singles is augmented by three superior tracks from the Soul LP (Year Of 29 has outstanding piano work from Lloyd Glenn)-.-and two strong unissued performances, Lonely Lonely Man and I Won't Care Anymore. Once again, Dick Shurman contributes a note of insight and perception. Perhaps leaving the best to last, the two-track master tapes have been folded back to glorious mono - as with the original singles - and remixed by engineer Duncan Cowell. The effect, musically and sonically, is quite shattering.

LOWELL FULSON – THE FINAL KENT YEARS

(The Final Kent Years brings to a close Ace's three-volume presentation of the complete 60s and 70s recordings waxed by Lowell Fulson for the Bihari brothers' Los Angeles-based Kent and Big Town labels. Black Nights (CDCHD 804) traced this memorable alliance from its 1964 beginning with those well-crafted early blues singles. There was much contribution from manager-songwriter Ferdinand Fats Washington together with West Coast R&B icon Maxwell Davis, who was in his final glory as arguably LA's greatest studio force in his field. The 'Tramp' Years (CDCHD 755) continued through Lowell's rejuvenation on the charts as a funkster and link in the musical food chain to hip-hop. Here, The Final Kent Years reprises Lowell's last two albums for the family combine, his last Kent single and three more recently unearthed tunes. The first major component of the set is the Now! LP, which made a typical Bihari trek through a series of cheapie labels after its Kent debut. This album largely takes us to the end of Lowell's main run with the company in 1968. Though Now! attracted no great notice at the time, and it was Lowell's only Kent LP not framed around a hit, it holds up very well. The brassy, ornate tracks have energetic performances by Lowell as big as the orchestrations-.-the stripped-down outings show Lowell close to his roots with frequent gospel tinges-.-his take on the covers is fresh and spirited. Throughout, the recently resurgent Arthur Adams's outstanding input as a guitarist, and as co-author of the shuffling dance anthem Push Me (probably a reflection of Adams's time on the Dallas Push club circuit that spawned Anson Funderburgh), takes the proceedings to another level. Five worthy loose ends from the period, including the last Kent single, provide a point of departure for the nine-year gap (with stints at Jewel and Granite) before Lowell's return to the Bihari fold. Lovemaker was the one-off product of a February 1978 outing under the auspices of indie vet George Mottola. It originally appeared, like Now!, to no discernible fanfare, on Big Town. While probably a low budget project of modest pretensions and not an essential in many LP piles, Lovemaker is nonetheless a good, solid, straight-ahead blues excursion. The band is basic and Lowell gets a goodly share of the guitar spotlight. Amid some standards which underscore Lowell's longtime affinity for Tampa Red, Lowell's originals tend toward midtempo blues, notably Bending Like A Willow Tree (covered by Albert Collins) and My Mind Is Trying To Leave Me, attributed to Lowell and his good friend Percy Mayfield and also revived by Collins.
Lowell went on to cut a number of fine albums for American, Canadian and European labels before his death at Long Beach CA on 7 March 1999. With these three Ace CDs, we have his 1964-78 Bihari catalogue to revisit with unprecedented depth, sound quality and convenience. It represents as full a spectrum as any such teaming could of the dimensions of Lowell Fulson's blues mastery, surrounded by quality writers, producers, arrangers and musicians. The association ranks with Lowell's most definitive and successful epochs, prolific and, in bursts, profitable. The Final Kent Years rounds out four hours of some of the most elemental and enjoyable reminders of what a resilient, flexible and passionately expressive great Lowell Fulson was.
