SLIM HARPO – THE BEST OF SLIM HARPO (Many of these Excello cuts will be familiar to fans of the Rolling Stones, the Kinks, Van Morrison etc, so check the source. Arguably the finest of the Baton Rouge bluesmen who came to typify the Excello Sound, Slim Harpo was only ever really rivalled in stature by contemporary Otis Hicks a.k.a. Lightnin' Slim. Born James Moore in 1924 in Lobdell, Louisiana, Slim Harpo began to record for the Crowley-based Excello label in the mid-5Os and, except for a brief spell with Imperial Records (unreleased) in 1962, continued to record for them until his untimely death in 1969.His music was a strong influence on the '60s British blues boom. Many of his singles saw UK release on labels like Pye and Stateside. The Rolling Stones recorded Slim's I'm A King Bee on their first album, The Yardbirds covered I Got Love If You Want It and Rainin' In My Heart was recorded as a Blue Horizon single by one-man blues band Duster Bennett. Zydeco godfather Clifton Chenier took Slim's Baby, Scratch My Rack and almost made it his own. Almost. For Slim Harpo's musical style was completely his own. Great songs-.-a grinding beat-.-slurred, mumbled yet hypnotic vocals-.-spiky, careening guitar lines-.-a rough simple harmonica style. Funky and slightly modem sounding, yet always downhome. His days on the chitlin' circuit, working one nighters and truck driving during the daytime began to come to an end after 1966 and Slim finally began to get the breaks. Scratch My Back reached No.16 on the Billboard chart and gigs materialised at L.A.'s Whiskey-A-Go-Go, New York's The Scene, The Apollo Theatre, the Fillmore East and The Electric Circus. Success beckoned but sadly it wasn't meant to be. 23 years after his death, the Best Of Slim Harpo stands as a testament to the durability of the singer's best work. ROY HAWKINS – THE THRILL IS GONE (Between 1949 and 1952, the Texas born pianist Roy Hawkins cut a whole slew of great blues and R&B records for Modern. These included several hits notably Why Do Everything Happen To Me, #2 on the R&B chart in February 1950 and The Thrill Is Gone, #6 on the R&B chart in July 1951. The Thrill Is Gone of course was later covered by BB King for ABC Bluesway and became King's biggest hit to date for that label in 1970. In fact BB' s version of the song became so popular that he adopted it as his signature tune. Why Do Everything Happen To Me was written for Roy by Oakland record impressario Bob Geddins while Roy was hospitalised with injuries sustained in a serious automobile accident. Incidentally, both BB King and James Brown later covered Why Do Everything Happen To Me although Geddins did not benefit as he had sold the song to Modern boss Jules Bihari who split the writing credits with Hawkins. After the automobile crash which left Hawkins with a paralysed arm, Modern Records' ace producer Maxwell Davis took over production duties on Hawkins' recordings for the company and brought in Willard McDaniels on piano. Geddins, who was responsible for unearthing many talented blues artists, including Jimmy McCracklin, ran a couple of small labels, Down Town and Cava-Tone, in the Oakland area of San Francisco. He was in the habit of leasing or selling his more successful masters to bigger labels such as Modern, Aladdin and Four Star. Geddins had discovered Roy Hawkins playing in a club in Oakland in 1948 and was very taken by his soulful, doom-laden style which was going over big with the club patrons. Hawkins and his backing group the Four Jacks were very popular and were doing sell-out business at several Bay area clubs at that time. The producer rushed Hawkins and his band into the studio to cut some sides to capitalise on their current popularity and released They Raided The Joint on Cava-Tone. After recording some more sides with Hawkins, Geddins sold It's Too Late To Change and Strange Land to Modern and Jules Bihari then brought Hawkins and his band to LA to record at Universal Recorders. This CD contains 24 of the best of Roy Hawkins recorded output for Modern and these masters have been carefully transferred from the original lacquers to produce the finest sound quality. Hawkins is a unique blues talent and his recordings on this CD sound as fresh and vital as if they had been recorded only yesterday. Esquerita may have been one of rockin'est cats ever, but Screamin' Jay' Hawkins was certainly the weirdest. A true original who has been steadily recording for nearly 40 years, Hawkins conjures up images of voodoo evil and satanic rites, all presented in an often looped manner that defies all norms. The man who opened his live shows by rising from a coffin was not the easiest performer to market, and as a result the hit total is scanty. His recording career is scattered amongst some two dozen labels, and while his most sustained stretch, with Columbia's Okeh subsidiary label, has been digitally documented elsewhere, this fine collection gathers together the important missing pieces: two sessions for Mercury and Wing in 1955, two sessions for Decca in 1966, four sessions for Philips in 1969 and a one-off single session for RCA from 1974. Among the many goodies are two remakes of I Put A Spell On You plus such wonders as Voodoo, She Put The Whamee On Me, Feast Of The Mau Mau, Constipation Blues, Bite It, and, just to complete the cycle, You Put A Spell On Me. Add to this an amazing, photo-filled 36-page booklet and you've got a pretty strong picture of an amazing, if unorthodox, performer. LINDA HAYES - ATOMIC BABY (21 female r&b masters from Hollywood. Shout Records is pleased to offer the opportunity to discover the music of Linda Hayes. Hayes scored R&B chart hits, with Yes I Know reaching no. 2 early in 1953, an answer-disc to Willie Mabon’s chart-topping I Don’t Know of a year earlier, and Take Me Back a top 10 hit in January 1954, both rich vibrant vocals influenced by Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, supported by energetic jump-blues combos including the Red Callender Band. Hayes also recorded one session with Johnny Moore s Three Blazers, included herein. Linda Hayes was born Bertha Williams, and is the sister of the great Platters lead singer Tony Williams. In fact Linda was the first Dish with the group, and introduced her brother to them, also recording on their first session for Federal, from which My Name Ain’t Annie is included here.
