ALBERT KING MORE BIG BLUES (Albert King, a big man, was one of the most influential blues guitarists of the post war period. With his pipe clenched firmly between his teeth and his trademark Flying V Gibson, he presented an imposing figure both onstage and off. His unique guitar style has been a major influence on countless blues musicians and his licks can be heard in the playing of such guitarists as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Rush, Mike Bloomfield and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Born in Indianola Mississippi in 1923, Albert grew up in Osceola, Kansas listening to gospel and blues. He didn't get his first guitar until he was 18, although his interest in music had led him to fashion makeshift instruments from wire and pieces of wood several years earlier. King sang and played in various gospel groups around Osceola and later made radio broadcasts with the In The Groove Boys a local R&B group. He moved north to Gary Indiana in 1952 where he ended up playing drums in Jimmy Reed's band. He did not forsake the guitar and in 1953 successfully auditioned for Parrot Records and cut his first records on guitar and vocals for that label. Albert King of course went on to make a series of seminal blues albums for Stax Records during the mid-60s and early 70s and it for these recordings that he is principally known. However apart from Parrot and Stax, Albert also recorded for many other labels including Bobbin, King, Coun-tree and Tomato. This CD deals with the period between 1959 and 1963 when he recorded for Bobbin Records. Albert had moved to St Louis and was playing the clubs around that city with his band. It was during this time that he developed his unique and unusual guitar style and these records show that style developing. Albert was left-handed but he learned to play with a guitar strung in the conventional manner for a right-handed guitarist. He plucked the strings with his left hand, using his right hand to hold down the chords. Albert who worked as a bulldozer driver before turning professional had exceptionally strong hands and this meant that he could bend the strings with ease. As his guitar was strung with the lightest strings (G & B) uppermost, Albert pulled the string downwards to create the wailing blue notes that were central to his sound. Guitarists playing in the conventional manner push the lightest strings upwards and this subtle difference helped King to develop his unique sound. Albert's unusual fingering allowed him to develop a devastating technique in which searing sustained blue notes were produced by bending single strings and sustaining the note using an undercurrent of feedback from his amplifier speakers. These sustained blue notes were usually incorporated into long cascading single string runs to great effect. Albert's recordings for Bobbin, commencing in 1959, show his style developing with his growing confidence and experience. His third record for the label in 1961, Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong picked up heavy local airplay and Bobbin Records owner Bob Lyons decided to lease the side to King Records to capitalise on this. The record went on to peak at #14 on the Billboard R&B chart and helped to establish Albert King and his band. In 1963, Albert was signed direct to King Records via his Bobbin deal and although he only cut one session at King, the company acquired the entire Bobbin back catalogue of masters. Many of these were released on Albert's first album The Big Blues on the King label [King LP 852] in 1964. Now for the first time all of Albert King's historic Bobbin recordings are being made available on one CD, a total of 22 tracks including alternate takes. Full track listing: 01 LET'S HAVE A NATURAL BALL 02 WHAT CAN I DO TO CHANGE YOUR MIND 03 I GET EVIL (DON'T YOU LIE TO ME) 04 THIS MORNING (LAST NIGHT) 05 I WALKED ALL NIGHT LONG 06 DON'T THROW YOUR LOVE ON ME SO STRONG 07 TRAVELIN' TO CALIFORNIA 08 I'VE MADE NIGHTS BY MYSELF 09 OOH-EE BABY 10 DYNA FLOW 11 WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN TO ME 12 JUST PLAIN BLUES (OO-EE BABY) 13 THE TIME HAS COME 14 NEED YOU BY MY SIDE 15 BLUES AT SUNRISE 16 I'LL DO ANYTHING YOU SAY 17 GOT TO BE SOME CHANGES MADE 18 OLD BLUE RIBBON 19 I'VE MADE NIGHTS BY MYSELF 20 WHY ARE YOU SO MEAN TO ME 21 THE TIME HAS COME 22 BLUES AT SUNRISE) ACE Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

ALBERT KING YEARS GONE BY PLUS! (The late Albert King, like BB was another King Of The Bluesand he played them meaner and more lowdown than almost any of his contemporaries. He started out on Bobbin, then moved to King, cut a couple of fine singles for Countree and then began to hit for Stax Records during the mid-60s. He was Stax's resident bluesman (everyone else on the label was cuttin' it with southern soul) and his first album for the label Born Under A Bad Sign became one of the influential guitar albums of the decade. Songs like The Hunter (covered by Free), Oh Pretty Woman (covered by John Mayall's Bluesbreakers) and the title track (remade by Cream, and almost every progressive blues band of the time) defined a new edge in contemporary blues. Backed by the very best of the Stax sessionmen, including the late great drummer Al Jackson, he went on to make an equally ground-breaking live set Live Wire Blues Power (now available as CDSXE 022) before making Years Gone By, an album complete with live cover shot showing off the backdrop psychedelic lighting of the period .The album, though, was definitely not live and conceded nothing at all to the rock music movement of the era. Instead it distilled all the early lessons in song and horn arrangements that the first Stax album had developed and brewed them up with the meaty guitar power of his stage repertoire to produce one of the most striking of all blues sets. Here we get the bone-crushing chords of Wrapped Up In Love Again, the wry philosophy of If The Washing Don't Get You, The Rinsing Will and the seriously funky R&B of Howlin' Wolf's Killing Floor. For this CD issue, compiler Ray Topping has added previously unavailable material from the vaults. Shake 'Em Down comes from the Muscle Shoals /Sky Hill sessions that produced the album Lovejoy (now available as 2-on-l CD, with I'll Play The Blues For You, as CDSXD 969). I Believe To My Soul was originally intended for the Born Under A Bad Sign album, but remained unissued. As The Years Go Passing By is a rare alternative take of the classic song from the same LP. I Get Evil and Got To Be Some Changes Made were Stax remakes of Albert's earlier Bobbin recordings retitled, respectively. Don't You Lie To Me and Treating Me Mean. Also included are alternative takes of Drowning On Dry Land, Heart Fixing Business and The Sky Is Crying, all featuring Albert's brilliant guitar work. The additions are completed with the Stax single Cold Sweat/Can't You See What You're Doing To Me. A feast! Full track listing: 01 WRAPPED UP IN LOVE AGAIN 02 SHIMMY SHIMMY WALK 03 COCKROACH 04 KILLING FLOOR 05 LONELY MAN 06 IF THE WASHING DON'T GET YOU, THE RINSING WILL 07 DROWNING ON DRY LAND (PART 1) 08 DROWNING ON DRY LAND (PART 2) 09 HEART FIXING BUSINESS 10 YOU THREW YOUR LOVE ON ME TOO STRONG 11 THE SKY IS CRYING 12 CAN'T YOU SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO ME 13 COLD SWEAT 14 AS THE YEARS GO PASSING BY 15 DROWNING ON DRY LAND 16 DON'T YOU LIE TO ME 17 SHAKE 'EM DOWN 18 I BELIEVE TO MY SOUL 19 HEART FIXING BUSINESS 20 THE SKY IS CRYING 21 GOT TO BE SOME CHANGES MADE) STAX Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

ALBERT KING THURSDAY NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO (The Fillmore Ballroom in San Francisco was renowned for its acid drenched nights of psychedelic debauchery in the late 60s. The list of artists who passed (or passed out) through its doors is a veritable who's who of 60s rock. But besides The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe &The Fish and a host of other rock names, the Fillmore and its audience of blissed-out love children were occasionally treated to the likes of Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding and, as featured here, Albert King. In 1968 Stax Records culled an album from 2 live shows that King performed for the daytrippers-.-that album was Live Wire, Blues Power(CDSXE 022/SXE 022) and it featured a bunch of tunes that Albert King had not released previously. Recently Bill Belmont (who by the way looked after said C.J.& Fish) at Fantasy Records unearthed then original multi-tracks and found a whole wealth of great unissued performances of what amounts to a best of Albert King Full track listing: 01 SAN-HO-ZAY 02 YOU UPSET ME BABY 03 STORMY MONDAY BLUES 04 EVERYDAY (I HAVE THE BLUES) 05 DRIFTIN' BLUES 06 I'VE MADE NIGHTS BY MYSELF 07 CROSSCUT SAW 08 I'M GONNA MOVE TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF TOWN 09 OOH-EE BABY) STAX Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

B. B KING THE JUNGLE - The Blues Boy makes his Hip Pocket debut with a first ever UK issue of his first-ever US Kent album. - 'The Jungle' was assembled by Kent/Modern to ride the success of BB's 1967 R&B and Hot 100 hit of that title. Although none of what it contained was new (BB having been an ABC artist since 1961), several of the mixes and overdubs were exclusive to this package, giving King fans who need everything the perfect excuse to buy it. - This CD reissue was reassembled from the tapes that were used for that original Kent album. Even though some of those tapes have since been used in the compilation of Ace's other King reissues, others - including the stereo version of the title track - are nevertheless making their Ace debut in this CD. - With its killer cover - featuring a rear view of Arthur Adams, masquerading as BB! - and some equally killer contents, this is a BB set that will appeal as much to the casually committed as it will to every hard core BB devotee. - A Hip Pocket LP facsimile in a cardboard sleeve reissue - at mid price. Track listing: THE JUNGLE, FIVE LONG YEARS, EYESIGHT TO THE BLIND, BLUE SHADOWS, THE WORST THING IN MY LIFE, BEAUTICIAN BLUES, AIN'T NOBODY'S BUSINESS, BLUES STAY AWAY FROM ME, I STAY IN THE MOOD, I CAN HEAR MY NAME aka MY BLACK NAME, GOT 'EM BAD, IT'S A MEAN WORLD aka MEAN OLD WORLD) U.K ACE Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

FREDDIE KING - TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS (7 CD boxset & 104 page hardback book. 168 recordings.Freddie King, the legendary Texas Cannonball, was one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time whose fiery style laid the foundation of modern rock guitar. 'Rolling Stone' placed him #25 on the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time because he profoundly influenced Eric Clapton (who recorded several of Kings songs including Hide Away, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Im Tore Down), Jeff Beck (The Stumble), Stevie Ray Vaughan (Hide Away), and many others. 'He was the guy' said Jimmie Vaughan. 'He was powerful. It was unbelievable. And I never heard anyone play louder back then!' 'If Im building a solo,' said Eric Clapton, 'Ill start with a Freddie King line. Of all the people I played with, he was the most stimulating.' Of the three seminal postwar blues guitarists answering to the name of King, Freddie King brought the highest energy levels to his studio exploits and probably influenced most rock axemen of all, including Eric Clapton and Jimmie Vaughan. King's innovative Texas/West Side Chicago hybrid approach was absolutely unique, and his double-threat hitmaking career as singer and instrumentalist was unmatched. No blues guitar god ever threw more of his muscular physique into his incendiary fretwork. And what a commanding, emotionally charged voice he had! This epic collection brings together for the first time in one spectacular box every released studio recording Freddie King made from 1956 to 1973. It includes both sides of his rare debut single for tiny El-Bee Records, a slew of Federal alternate takes (several previously unheard), and an entire unissued demo session from 1968 consisting of Freddie's only known studio rendition of J.B. Lenoir's The Mojo, and three dynamite untitled instrumentals. Everything King subsequently had out on Cotillion and Shelter is here, too. There have been many Freddie King 'Greatest Hits' packages on the market over the decades focusing on one chapter of his career, but this is the ultimate tribute to one of the most influential blues guitarists the genre has ever seen. Nothing like it has ever been attempted, and no dedicated blues fan can live without it!
