LENNY LACOUR - WALKIN' THE BULLFROG - RARE & UNRELEASED

(25 tracks from Chicago & Louisiana 1956 - 1979. Proto r&b rock and later, stranger material from Lenny LaCour -- a Louisiana character who moved it on over to Chicago in the early 50s! Lenny recorded singles for a few labels over the years that have rarely if ever been reissued before. Probably about 3/4's of the work here is Lenny's earlier work from the 50s or 60s, and it's great stuff. Jump blues and rockabilly rooted, it's sharp, dynamic and raw instrumentally, with charismatic wildman vocals -- sometimes steering towards exotic boogie, others more doo wop based, and still others straight up dance party stormers! Some of the later stuff from the 60s is on the bluesier side, and the last few tracks on the CD are just plain weird disco era novelties.

JULIA LEE KANSAS CITY STAR

(5 x cd box-set with 32 page book....No-one handled a ribald blues like Julia Lee, but it would be wrong to think of her simply as a singer of smutty songs. LEO'S FIVE - DIRECT FROM THE BLUE NOTE CLUB

(21 tracks taken from the super rare original LP & from 45rpm releases - great early 60s St. Louis small blues-jazz-soul combo sounds - features Albert King on 4 tracks. Ultra-desirable, early 60s St. Louis R & B that commands a small fortune in collector circles.

The late vocalist Leo Gooden was an important local mover-and-shaker whose ear for talent helped him assemble one of the best bands of its time.

Assembled initially to be the house band at Gooden's Blue Note Club, Leo's Five soon took on an identity of their own. The driving rhythm section of drummer Kenny Rice and organist Don James was something of a prototype for the small Jazz-R&B combos that abounted on the early-mid 60s, such as those of Jimmy McGriff and Jimmy Smith, while the hard saxophony of tenor player Charles 'Little Man' Wright led a horn section to die for.

Although they never recorded for a major label, Leo's Five enjoy as big a reputation among fans of 'Soul Jazz' as do many groups with a considerably higher profile. This CD brings together the best tracks from their stupidly rare 1960 album, assorted even rarer St. Louis 45s on which they appeared as the 'instrumental accompaniment' and two fantastic 45s where they are fronted by blues guitar legend - and a man who sat in with Leo's Five many times in his pre-fame days - Albert King.

With notes by British born, St. Louis-based blues/R & B expert Bill Greensmith, reminiscences from Kenny Rice and the usual array of obscurse label art, this is a set that no lover of cookin' R & B instrumentals will want to be without.

Track listing:
1. HOLD IT, 2. C.O.D. - Albert King, 3. WORSOME BABY - Albert King, 4. LONESOME - Albert King, 5. YOU THREW YOUR LOVE ON ME TOO SRONG - Albert King, 6. LET'S DO THE CAT - Jamie Ross with Leo's Five, 7. SO GLAD - Charles Drain, 8. STOP AND THINK ABOUT IT - Charles Drain, 9. HIGH HEEL SNEAKERS, 10. SOMETHING YOU GOT, 11. SUNRISE SERENADE, 12. COOKIN' WITH CHEZIE MAE, 13. FREDERICK'S DREAM, 14. OL' MAN RIVER Part 1, 15. OL' MAN RIVER Part 2, 16. WINKEE-DO - Leo Gooden, 17. UGLY-UGLY - Leo Gooden, 18. TIPPIN', 19. BEAR FAMILY ROCKS SERIES: SMILEY LEWIS - ROCKS

(The charts didn't reflect just how spectacular Smiley Lewis' 1950s output for Imperial Records was. Under the savvy aegis of producer/songwriter Dave Bartholomew and featuring the Crescent City's top studio sidemen, Smiley made some of the most blistering rockers of his era. Yet only a handful of them were national hits; his classic original I Hear You Knocking was victimized by a puerile Gale Storm cover that killed his pop crossover potential, and Elvis Presley latched onto One Night, cleaned it up, and sold a lot more copies than Smiley ever did. Why She's Got Me Hook, Line And Sinker, Bumpity Bump, Rootin' And Tootin', and Shame, Shame, Shame weren't hits during rock 'n' roll's primordial age we'll never know. Bear Family's jam-packed single-disc collection of Smiley's greatest rockers showcases his huge, wall-shaking voice (reminiscent of Big Joe Turner's on the bluesier early stuff) on a non-stop barrage of rockers ranging from 1950 to 1958. Bartholomew was Smiley's best source for material, writing most of his most memorable releases, though Lewis penned a few of his own early on. Even Little Richard would be envious of some of these houserockers, with tenor saxman Lee Allen wailing and drummer Earl Palmer stoking the romping rhythm like a locomotive. This is the most comprehensive single-disc Smiley Lewis collection on the market!

The most comprehensive single-disc collection available of Smiley's rocking 1950s output for Imperial. Features the brilliant Studio Band at Cosimo Matassa's New Orleans studio: saxists Lee Allen and Herbert Hardesty, drummer Earl Palmer, pianists Edward Frank and Huey Smith, and trumpeter/producer Dave Bartholomew among them. Contains both scorching versions of Shame, Shame, Shame, many equally fabulous rockers, like Bumpity Bump and Smiley's classic originals I Hear You Knocking and One Night, covered by Gale Storm and Elvis Presley respectively. Boasting a booming vocal delivery, Smiley was one of the seminal performers on the 1950s New Orleans R&B scene.

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS - TEXAS BLUES GIANT

(There was nobody quite like Lightnin' Hopkins. John Lee Hooker may have made more records but even he couldn't match the consistently high level of Hopkins' creativity. He and his vast repertoire represented the epitome of Texas country blues. No question. He came from a musical family and his unique guitar style was fashioned from the traditions he learned in the presence of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, a distant cousin. His guitar both underscored and complemented the songs he drew from his own life and the lives of those around him. His recording career began in 1946 and hardly paused for the next three decades.

In that time, he created an amazing miscellany of original blues, starting with ‘Katie Mae Blues', through ‘Shotgun Blues', ‘Automobile Blues', ‘Long Way From Texas', ‘Dirty House Blues', ‘Sad News From Korea' and ‘Ain't It A Shame' to his last major commercial sessions for the New York-based Herald label in April 1954, which make up the entire third disc here. Songs like ‘Don't Think 'Cause You're Pretty', ‘Nothin' But The Blues', ‘Lonesome In Your Home', ‘Sittin' Down Thinkin'' and ‘Lightnin' Don't Feel Well' showed that the wellspring of his inspiration hadn't dried up. Nor was he always serious, as ‘Lightnin's Boogie', ‘Grandma's Boogie' and ‘Hopkins Sky Hop' proved.

Lightnin' Hopkins went on from these recordings to become an international blues star before his death in January 1982. He may have travelled in foreign climes but his heart was always in Houston's Dowling Street, amongst the friends and neighbours whose lives he memorialised in his songs.

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS - HIS BLUES

(2 CD set. Almost universally referred to as the post-war King Of Texas Blues, Lightnin' Hopkins enjoyed a virtually continuous recording career from his first visit to a recording studio in 1946 until his death in 1982.

With hundreds of recordings made for dozens of record labels, Lightnin' remains one of the most prolific (and popular) of all blues artists, as the numerous CD reissues of his recordings demonstrate.

In a world of several hundred Lightnin' Hopkins compilations, mostly of dubious quality, this is the definitive overview of his long career and is certain to prove essential to die-hard Hopkins collectors and novice blues buyers alike.
