HOT LIPS PAGE - ROLL, ROLL, ROLL (Beginning his promising rise to national fame in the late 1930s as a rival to that other trumpet-playing, gravel-voiced entertainer, Louis Armstrong, Hot Lips Page changed tack, jumping with both feet in the direction of the burgeoning R&B sound in the mid 1940s. It was a move that was sure to offend all the serious jazz music fans, but it would endear him to all the low-brow jump-blues lovers - both then and now! This CD celebrates those R&B years of the man who could have been King... Oran Thadeus Page was born in Dallas, Texas, on January 27, 1908. Page's mother, a schoolteacher and musician, taught him the basics of music when he was a child. By the age of twelve he could play the clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet. He joined a local youth band, led by drummer Lux Alexander, which played at local venues around Dallas. Page attended Corsicana High School and Texas College (in Tyler), and worked for a time in the oilfields. He began his professional touring career when he joined 'Ma' Rainey's band in the 1920s. Page traveled the Southwest with Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ida Cox and other touring acts. From 1928 to 1931 Page was a member of the Blue Devils; in 1932 he joined Bennie Motens orchestra, remaining until 1935. After Moten's death, he continued to work with Count Basie, who had taken over the orchestra. Page stayed on as a member of Count Basies original Reno Club band. The Reno Club, in downtown K.C., had a floorshow, which included Lips Page and Jimmy Rushing, and Basie's band was just starting to turn up the heat, but in 1936 - on the eve of Basies national success - Page decided to forge a solo career. Page left after Louis Armstrong had caught him at the Reno and enthusiastically recommended him to his manager, Joe Glaser. Lips wanted Basie and the band to come with him as leader, but Basie declined, and Lips went off to seek his fame in New York. He never realized the success as a leader that he had enjoyed as a sideman. While in New York, he worked at the Onyx Club in the spring of 1937 and in the Bedford Ballroom with the orchestra of Louis Metcalf. In 1938, he appeared in the Golden Gate Ballroom and the beginning of the 40s, was with the big band of Bud Freeman. He recorded as the Hot Lips Page Trio for Bluebird in 1940 before joining Artie Shaw where he worked from 1941-1942. Starting in 1944 he recorded for Commodore and Savoy, fronting his own groups (Hot Lips Page Orchestra and Hot Lips Page Swing Seven). In May 1949, Page traveled for the first time to Europe, where he played at the Jazz Festival in Paris. He visited Europe again in 1951 and 1952, to make a tour of Scandinavia and France. From 1952 until his health began to deteriorate in 1953, he worked various jazz shows around the United States. In October 1954 Page suffered a heart attack. Seven days later, on November 5, he died of complications from pneumonia in New York City. Track listing: Last Call For Alcohol, They Raided The Joint, There Ain't No Flies On Me, Texas And Pacific, Walkin' In A Daze, Miss Larceny Blues, Roll, Roll, Roll, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Jeety-Boat Joad, Florida Blues, Ashes On My Pillow , Open The Door, Richard!, Birmingham Boogie, I Want To Ride Like The Cowboys Do, Let Me In!, Strike While The Iron's Hot, The Jungle King, The Cadillac Song, Blow, Champ, Blow, Chocolate Candy Blues - duet with Little Sylvia, The Hucklebuck - duet with Pearl Bailey, Pacifying Blues - duet with Little Sylvia, That's The One For Me - duet with Mildred Anderson, Sharp Little Sister - duet with Little Sylvia, Main Street, I've Got The Upper Hand, Moanin' Dan) EL TORO Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

EARL PALMER BACKBEAT (Earl Palmer not only shared the same hallowed initials as Elvis Presley but also contributed enormously to the mainframe of first generation rock'n'roll music. His roots stretch back so far, that before Earl mobilised a snare alongside a kick drum and added cymbals and a top kit, there really wasn't such a thing as a drum set to play his kind of music on. Earl developed his love of infectious rhythms when he trod the boards as a child dancer, working with all facets of local life in New Orleans, ranging from a featured spot in a blues revue to stooging for Louis Prima. After serving his time in the military (which included a run-in with the Home Guard in Southern England!), Earl returned to the Crescent City where he was hired to play drums in the prestigious Dave Bartholomew Band. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time as the post war R&B boom was just getting underway and the regional recording scene was beckoning in all directions. The ball started rolling in 1949 when he played on Fats Domino's debut hit, The Fat Man, and from thereon the phone was ringing off the hook. Helped to implement the house band at Cosimo Matassa's jam studio and when Little Richard came to town to record Tutti Frutti. It seemed the whole world wanted the powerful Palmer backbeat. After a move to LA in 1957, he took a producer's gig at Aladdin Records and worked his magic on some classic recordings by Shirley & Lee, Big T Tyler and Thurston Harris. His workload expanded to four sessions a day, seven days a week and could range from a Sinatra date to a Flintstones' cartoon soundtrack. However, it is his stellar work on the best recordings of the likes of Eddie Cochran, Bobby Day and Jesse James that sets the seal on his talents, released as an essential companion to his newly-published autobiography, Backbeat, this 30-tracker fully illustrates the remarkable Earl Palmer story. PAPA GEORGE LIGHTFOOT GOIN' BACK TO THE NATCHEC TRACE (One of the finest of southern juke joint bluesmen, Papa George Lightfoot's music was totally untainted by the folk and blues revivals of the late 50s and mid-60s. Born Alexander Lightfoot in Natchez on March 2, 1924, the Deep South harmonica player and singer recorded for Peacock, Aladdin, Imperial and Savoy. His 1954 Imperial side Wine,Women,Whiskey was later issued in England in 1969 as a single on Liberty. Later that same year, Lightfoot was tracked down by Steve La Vere and recorded at the new Malaco studio in Jackson, Mississippi on 21st July 1969. The session was originally released as Natchez Trace by Vault Records of California and saw almost simultaneous release in the UK on Liberty Records. Among the sides is New Mean Old Train, an updated version of Mean Old Train, a song Lightfoot recorded earlier for both Imperial and Savoy. Goin' Back To The Natchez Trace presents the earlier LP together with 5 previously unissued tracks and an extended spoken monologue. The recordings have been completely restored from original analogue master tapes, the sound quality vastly improved upon and the music totally remixed by Vie Keary at Chiswick Reach Studio, London, on valve equipment. If you previously knew this LP when it was available on either Vault, Liberty or Crosscut, you are in for a big (and pleasant) surprise. Papa George is accompanied by a fine little group including soul man Tommy Tate on drums, Carson Whitsett on piano, Jerry Puckett on guitar and Ron Johnson on bass. Following the album's release he appeared at the famous Ann Arbor, Michigan Blues Festival in 1970 but, before he could capitalise on his turn of fortune, he died suddenly on 28th November, 1971 at Natchez Charity Hospital. Goin' Back To The Natchez Trace stands as a testament to his music and to the kind of Deep South blues now long gone Full track listing: 01 MY WOMAN IS TIRED OF ME LYIN' 02 NEW MEAN OLD TRAIN 03 LOVE MY BABY 04 GOIN' DOWN THAT MUDDY ROAD 05 AH COME ON HONEY 06 I HEARD SOMEBODY CRYING 07 TAKE IT WITCHA 08 NIGHTTIME 09 EARLY IN THE MORNING 10 WALKIN' 11 GOIN' BACK TO NATCHEZ 12 BABY PLEASE DON'T GO 13 TRAIN TUNE 14 PAPA GEORGE - TALKIN' ABOUT IT) ACE Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

BEAR FAMILY ROCKS SERIES: PIANO RED - ROCKS (33 fantastic black piano rockers & rompers with 5 x un-issued recordsings - 48 page booklet in digi-pac. The only career retrospective to combine the biggest hits of Piano Red and his alter-ego, Dr. Feelgood. His irresistibly cheerful songs inspired Little Richard, Aretha Franklin and a host of rockabillies including Carl Perkins. Five tracks are released here for the first time ever. 'Everyone should have at least one Piano Red CD' (Trevor Cajiao, Now Dig This) and this is the best. The boisterous barrelhouse blues of Willie Perryman were a guaranteed good time no matter which name the Atlanta 88s ace recorded under. After scoring five pounding R&B hits in 1950-1951 for RCA Victor as Piano Red (including the piledriving Rockin' With Red and Right String But The Wrong Yo Yo) and cutting a slew of additional rockers for the firm that stretched into 1958, Red signed with Columbia's OKeh subsidiary, he switched his moniker to Dr. Feelgood and The Interns and nailed a big hit in '62 with his irresistible Doctor Feel-Good. Bear Family's exhaustive four-CD boxed set 'The Doctor's In!' remains the ultimate Piano Red/Dr. Feelgood collection, but this disc boasts a lot of its high points Red's Victor hits and a generous array of other Victor standouts (including the blistering instrumental Wild Fire), the best of his late '50s sides for Checker and Jax, and five previously unreleased OKeh and Columbia sides from 1962 and '66 that were presumed lost when the box was compiled. Track listing: Rockin' With Red, Jumpin' The Boogie, Red's Boogie, Right String But The Wrong Yo Yo, Diggin' The Boogie, Layin' The Boogie, The Sales Tax Boogie, She Walks Right In, She's Dynamite, Everybody's Boogie, Decatur Street Boogie, She Knocks Me Out, Chitlin' Hop, I Ain't Fattenin' Frogs For Snakes, Big Rock Joe From Kokomo, Jump Man Jump, Woo-Ee, Rock, Baby, Wild Fire, Rock And Roll Boogie, Boogie Re-Bop, I've Been Rockin', Doctor Feel-Good, I Ain't Gonna Be A Lowdown Dog No More, What's Up Doc, Bald-Headed Lena, Blang Dong, I'm Gonna Rock Some More, Jumping The Boogie aka Jump, The Double Twist, I Need You, Can't Wait No Longer, Rock Me aka Rock Rock Rock) BEAR FAMILY Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |
