ALBERT WASHINGTON – BLUES AND SOUL MAN (There is a very special corner in American music at the intersection of Blues Boulevard, Gospel Drive and Soul Street where only select performers of the highest calibre can hang out and celebrate the convergence of those forms of music in glorious song. Not all of those artists made the Top 10, or Soul Train, but they hit some heavenly heights in their music in cramped ghetto clubs. Playing the 9pm-to-2.30am-for-15-bucks-a-man grind, spinning out heart-wrenching anthems for the faithful who follow the band, from club to club, week after week, to hear what they couldn't hear on the radio. Providing relief, consolation and satisfaction from three feet away on the stage, where crowds sometimes jostle the crackling amplifiers as they dance, requesting songs amid a tangle of microphone wires, or slide a watered-down coke onto the electric piano for the friend on the bandstand. These performers are the unsung heroes of American music. Albert Washington was one of those special performers, consolers, friends. He brought the spirit of his birthplace in Rome, Georgia, the rhythms of gospel, blues and R&B from the victrolas and juke boxes of his youth and his own magnificently soulful sensibilities and talent with him to the haze-filled bars of Cincinnati's African American clubs and made them some of the most sacred musical places imaginable. He covered James Brown, Sam Cooke, the Staple Singers, but really struck home most when he segued into his own songs. The instantaneous roar from the crowd when he intoned the opening words of his earliest local hit, I Haven't Got A Friend, attested to his error. Indeed, he did have friends, many in fact, who went back a quarter of a century, following him through his rich recording career with VLM, Finch, Fraternity, Jewel, Eastbound, Iris and a variety of other labels from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. We remember the soaringly sweet voice, nimble guitar playing and songwriting ability that gave us 30 years of memorable personal moments. His Fraternity and Jewel recordings are among his best, demonstrating indeed that he was of the brotherhood, a brother from the hood, with a special musical gift. ALBERT WASHINGTON – SAD AND LONELY (Although he started his recording career as a straight-ahead bluesman, Cincinnati-based singer Albert Washington easily embraced the new soul styles as the 60s wore on. Ace has already collected together his seminal Fraternity and Jewel cuts from the turn of that decade in the aptly named Blues & Soul Man CD (CDCHD 727) and now add the first CD reissue of the only album he cut during Soul's Golden Age - a highly sought-after rarity these days. In 1973 the Eastbound/Westbound label arranged for him to follow stable-mates the Detroit Emeralds to Memphis where he cut Sad And Lonely at Steve Cropper's TMI studios. And what an artistic success coupling Washington's high, crying vocals to a crack band (including the Memphis Horns) proved to be. Washington contributed half the material for the set, including the funky No Matter What The Cost May Be, the quintessential James Brown-like You're Messing Up My Mind, the upbeat I Can't Stand It No More, and the first class 6/8 ballad Do You Really Love Me. As a tip of the hat to the Emeralds he essayed their big hit Feel The Need as well as their tasteful If I Lose Your Love from 1970. But the killer tracks are the lengthy, slow minor-keyed blues Wings Of A Dove, and his own heartfelt, very moving deep ballad My Mother's Prayer. The former cut joined the excellent title track as the only 45 to be lifted from the LP, but sadly neither meant anything in a crowded market place. But this superbly realised CD, with informative notes from Steve Tracy, redresses that particular balance. A special treat here is the inclusion of a splendid, previously unissued version of the soul classic Steal Away. Washington was at the height of his considerable vocal powers when he cut these tracks, and the arrival of the disco boom shortly afterwards put this sort of emotionally compelling music on ice for a couple of decades. He recorded two comeback sets in the early 90s but was by now in poor health and he died in 1998. AL 'CAKE' WICHARD SEXETTE - CAKE WALKIN' - THE MODERN LABEL RECORDINGS 1947 - 1948 (Al 'Cake' Wichard's drumming can be heard behind almost all of the singers and instrumentalists who recorded for Modern in the company's early years. During those years he also recorded several sessions for Modern with his own Sextette. This CD brings together the very best masters and alternates from Wichard's own sessions as a bandleader and fills a conspicuous gap in Ace's reissue programme of post WWII West Coast R&B. Little is known of Wichard but plenty is known about those who recorded with him, including Jimmy Witherspoon, Pee Wee Crayton, Big Duke Henderson and legendary Kansas City piano player Jay Hootie McShann - all of whom can be heard on this CD. With one exception, none of the masters or alternates on Cake Walkin' has previously been issued on any Ace CD. In fact, over 60% of the selections here have never been issued at all. This really is exemplary small group R&B from what are considered to be the peak years for this kind of music. (The herculean efforts of Sound Mastering's engineers to make what were some decidedly battered sound sources sound like they do here will not go unappreciated, either.) Track listing: 1.
