DVD/CD - JOHNNY CASH - AT FOLSOM PRISON

(CD + DVD set) (2 x CDs PLUS 1 x DVD. On January 13, 1968, Johnny Cash walked into California's Folsom State Prison and made popular music history. The choicest cuts from the two shows he recorded that day merged to become At Folsom Prison, a multi-million selling album produced by Bob Johnston that unveiled a startling portrait of American prison life and energized Cash's career. The most popular album of Cash's career to that point, it soared to the top of the charts and paved Cash's way to international stardom.

Now available in this deluxe three-disc edition are each one of Cash's thirty-six performances from both shows (sixteen of them unissued until now) and the unreleased performances of his road mates Carl Perkins, The Statler Brothers, and June Carter. The definitive versions of Cash's 'Folsom Prison Blues,' 'Cocaine Blues,' 'Dark As A Dungeon' and other classics crack from the album like shotgun fire, cementing his mythic man-in-black persona and underscoring his rowdy camaraderie with the imprisoned men. Cash also takes on songs new to him such as the country chestnut 'I'm Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail,' and 'Greystone Chapel,' written by Folsom inmate Glen Sherley.

At Folsom Prison's rebellious attitude and plea for compassion for the imprisoned (articulated in Cash's original liner notes and the pouring out of his soul on stage) intersected with the spirit of 1968, finding a place next to figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy who urged Americans to reach out to the disenfranchised and next to young Americans taking to the streets to protest war and inequality. Curious music fans and socially-conscious critics across the nation were magnetized.

This deluxe edition of At Folsom Prison also includes the DVD Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, the first documentary film to consider Cash's finest day. Produced by award-winning director Bestor Cram and Cash biographer Michael Streissguth, the documentary follows the country star through the gates of the dark prison to reveal a moment flush with ramifications. Featuring exclusive interviews with those who accompanied Cash at Folsom Prison, friends and family, and inmates who witnessed the show, the documentary examines Cash through the lens of January 13, 1968. New footage filmed inside Folsom Prison, dramatic photographs by Jim Marshall, and rare archival material featuring Cash illustrate the album and concert's importance in a new and gripping way.

DVD - THE HANK GARLAND STORY

(Crazy based on the life of legendary guitarist Hank Garland. First-time feature film director Rick Bieber is at the helm with Waylon Payne, godson of Waylon Jennings and son of Grammy-winner Sammi Smith and guitarist Jody Payne, taking on the role of Hank Garland. Ali Larter co-stars as his wife, Evelyn.

Bieber, Jason Ehlers and Brent Boyd wrote the screenplay which follows Garland's life and career. Ray Scherr and Steve Vai arte the executive producers. According to a press release issued by Favored Nations, prior to Garland's death he was actively involved in the film's development.

Hank Garland joined the Grand Ol' Opry at 15 and rose to fame in the early 1950s as Nashville's premiere session guitarist. His immense, innovative talents grace the timeless recordings of music icons including Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline. In 1961, he startled the music world by jumping genres from country and pop to jazz with the release of Jazz Winds From A New Direction, a tour de force that to this day is considered an all-time classic jazz album. Later that same year, a crippling, near-fatal auto accident cut short his extraordinary ascent. Crazy's narrative is driven by Garland's stunning artistic triumphs and dramatic personal travails, and his passionate and stormy relationship with his wife Evelyn.
Inspired by the life of Hank Garland, CRAZY is the story of a legendary guitar player who emerged from Nashville in the 1950’s. Blessed with incomparable, natural talent, Hank quickly established his reputation as the finest sessions player in Nashville. Artists such as Roy Orbison, Patsy Cline, The Everly Brothers and Elvis all sought Hank’s brilliant play for their recordings. Moving effortlessly from country, to rock-a-billy, to jazz, Hank was also quickly recognized by the likes of Dave Bruebeck, Gary Burton, Joe Morello and Joe Benjamin.
The Nashville scene was a unique place in the 50’s – dominated by a small group of executives and musicians who controlled the studios, labels and unions. Hank, in his arrogance and pursuit of musical excellence, often came into conflict with the business, social and racial culture he found both restrictive and frequently frustrating. But it was his relationship with his wife, Evelyn, which may have ultimately led to his demise.
Beautiful and sharp-witted, Evelyn was unlike any woman Hank had ever encountered when meeting her during a club date in Chicago. She both excited and fascinated him, and turned a whirlwind romance into an almost instant marriage. But Evelyn was not all she appeared to be, and when confronted with the reality of Hank’s obsessive dedication to his music, began to demonstrate a desperate need to make him love only her.
Some people say that a near-fatal car accident, which Hank suffered, was a result of tragic response to dreams unfulfilled. Others will say that the subsequent electro-shock therapy which ended Hank’s playing career at the age of thirty-one was also a result of Evelyn’s despair. But forty-three years after Hank disappeared from the music scene, his guitar lives on in a countless number of hit records, and one, amazing solo jazz effort)
