DUANE EDDY - MOVIN' N' GROOVIN' (With his trademark red Gretsch, shy demeanour, movie star's good looks and instantly-identifiable 'twangy' style, Duane Eddy was Rock'n'Roll's first major instrumental star. He introduced an entirely new sound to popular music by plucking dramatic, single-string lead melodies on the lower, bass strings of his axe, and making liberal use of the 'bendy' effect offered by the (then, relatively-new) tremelo arm. His echo-drenched records - with their signature saxes and whooping rebel yells - were both innovative and influential, laying down the mark for a whole new genre of R&R which would embrace the likes of The Champs, Johnny & The Hurricanes, The Ventures, The Shadows and all their many and varied acolytes. Between 1958-64 Duane scored 27 hit singles in the United States, 21 in the UK - and no less than 10 chart LPs, at a time when precious few R&R artists registered hit albums. THE FIREBALLS - EXOTIC GUITARS FROM THE CLOVIS VAULTS (The latest in our series of limited edition collectors' items features Clovis, New Mexico's favourite sons. This is a limited pressing of 1500 copies. When 'Wide World Hits by The String-A-Longs' was issued by Atco in 1968, buyers could hardly have been aware that they were actually purchasing an instrumental LP by The Fireballs. The band were simply masquerading under the name of the String-A-Longs at Norman Petty's behest. This album is the centrepiece of this CD, plus the non-album track 'Popi' which was also issued under the String-A-Longs name. After much searching in the Clovis vaults we have been fortunate enough to discover an additional five titles - versions of the Doors' 'Light My Fire', the Supremes' 'Love Child', Johnny Nash's 'Hold Me Tight', Classic IV's 'Stormy' and Otis Redding's 'Dock Of The Bay' - which were originally recorded for the project but not included on the album. Here they are correctly credited to the Fireballs or George Tomsco. We've also discovered nine more previously unreleased Fireballs' tracks, making this a veritable feast for the instrumental fan. CHET ATKINS - ELEGANT CHET (Chet Atkins played a major role in creating what came to be known as 'The Nashville Sound' and throughout his career he maintained a reputation as a leading performer, producer and talent-spotter. As a guitarist he was influenced by Django Reinhardt and Les Paul and brought to country music a new sophistication. No self respecting guitar player should be without Chet Atkins in his or her collection; his virtuosity, eclectic taste and almost incomprehensible range of playing are simply unparalleled. As a session guitarist, Chet Atkins played on Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel (which he also arranged) and backed the Everly Brothers on their hits Wake Up, Little Susie and Bye Bye Love. Many of the hit records he produced during his days at RCA such as Don Gibson’s Oh Lonesome Me, are now classics. Chet Atkins released over a hundred solo albums (selling an estimated 35 million records). JERRY COLE - GUITARS A GO GO - THE 1960s CROWN RECORDINGS VOLUME 2 (In the 1960s, the late Jerry Cole was one of America's most prolific guitarists, turning his hand to surf music, rock, country, jazz and blues and playing on sessions for Brian Wilson, Phil Spector and countless others. He would replace less proficient group members at recordings, often anonymously. Cole made several low-budget-but very technically proficient albums for the Modern label's Crown imprint. This is our second helping from these sources - following the 2006 release of 'Hot Rod Twangin'. The golden age of guitar-driven rock'n'roll instrumentals lasted from 1957 to around 1967. In order to satisfy the public's newly-found fascination with the electric guitar, countless guitar-oriented records were released during the era and the now often-overlooked genre exploded with a blast of sounds and rhythms never heard before that time. Without uttering a word, these magnificent and sometimes quirky guitar instros captured and conveyed the excitement and mystery of the space age, surfing, spying, hot rods, gang fights, beatniks, love, drinking, the wild west, exotic locations, food, superheroes, moods, dance crazes, weather, local colour and tripping on acid.
