DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM AMERICAN GRAFFITI

((all-time classic 1973 feature film, set in the late 50s-early 60s with Ron Howard & Richard Dreyfuss. Great rock 'n' roll soundtrack with original versions by original artists. Extras include: 78 min 'making of' feature, Trailer, Cast & Filmmaker's Notes, Production Notes
Before jetting across the universe in Star Wars, George Lucas set his sights on mapping a more modest locale: American Graffiti follows four friends on the streets of Modesto, California one late summer night in 1962. With DJ Wolfman Jack (as himself) spinning rock 'n' roll classics (he's almost like a Greek chorus), the tunes blare from the hot rods cruising the main strip and set the tone for the evening's misadventures. Curt (Richard Dreyfuss) and his best friend Steve (Ron Howard) are about to leave for college in the east, but Curt's having a change of heart -- and searching for a blonde in a white Thunderbird (Suzanne Somers) -- while Steve and his girlfriend Laurie (Cindy Williams) try to say goodbye for the year. John Milner (Paul Le Mat), the aging king of the strip in his neon yellow hot rod, is unwittingly shackled with annoying street urchin Carol (Mackenzie Philips) and dogged by eager street racer Bob Falfa (Harrison Ford). Compared to Lucas's Star Wars trilogy -- to a degree, the protracted coming-of-age tale of Luke Skywalker -- American Graffiti exists much more within the moment. It savors youth's bittersweet last fandango, when looming maturity seems to make each moment more precious than the last.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY

(classic 1978 USA movie with Gary Busey playing the role of Buddy in this great biopic, With 12 Holly songs included in the film
The film opens with Buddy Holly's beginnings as a teenager in Lubbock, Texas and his emergence into the world of rock and roll with his fictional good friends and bandmates, drummer Jesse Charles (Don Stroud) and bass player Ray Bob Simmons (Charles Martin Smith), soon to be known as The Crickets. Their first break comes when they are brought to Nashville, Tennessee to record, but Buddy's vision soon clashes with the producers' rigid ideas of how the music should sound and he walks out. Eventually, he finds a more flexible producer, Ross Turner (Conrad Janis), who, after listening to their audition, very reluctantly allows Buddy and the Crickets to make music the way he wants. While there, he meets Turner's secretary, Maria Elena Santiago (Maria Richwine). His budding romance with her nearly ends before it can begin, when her aunt initially refuses to let her date him, but Buddy persuades her to change her mind. On their very first date, Maria accepts his marriage proposal and they are soon wed. A humorous episode results from a misunderstanding in one of their early bookings. Sol Gittler (Dick O'Neill) signs them up sight-unseen for the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, assuming from their music that they're a black band. When three white Texans show up instead, he is stunned, but unwilling to pay them for doing nothing, he nervously lets them perform and prays fervently that the all-black audience doesn't riot at the sight of the first all-white band to play there. (In real life, that distinction belongs to Jimmy Cavallo and The House Rockers, who played at that venue in 1956.) After an uncomfortable start and an initially hostile crowd, Buddy's songs soon win them over and the Crickets are a tremendous hit. Gitler books them to come back several times. After two years, Ray Bob and Jesse decide to break up the band, feeling overshadowed by Buddy and not wanting to relocate to New York City. Initially, he is saddened by their departure, but he soldiers on. When Maria announces that she is pregnant, Buddy is delighted.
On February 2, 1959, preparing for a concert at Clear Lake, Iowa, Holly decides to charter a private plane to fly to Moorhead, Minnesota for his next big concert. The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens (who is reluctant to fly, but wins a coin toss with Tommy Allsup for the last seat) join him on the flight. Meanwhile, the Crickets, feeling nostalgic, appear unexpectedly at Maria's door, expressing their desire to reunite the band. They trace Buddy's next tour stop at Minnesota, and they plan to surprise him there. After playing his final song, Not Fade Away, Holly bids the crowd farewell with Thank you Clearlake! We love you. C'mon....we'll see you next year. A caption at the end reveals the deaths of Holly, Valens, and the Bopper in a plane crash that night and dedicates the film to his family and friends (the people who loved him first))

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM CRAZY - THE HANK GARLAND STORY

(Crazy based on the life of legendary guitarist Hank Garland. First-time feature film director Rick Bieber is at the helm with Waylon Payne, godson of Waylon Jennings and son of Grammy-winner Sammi Smith and guitarist Jody Payne, taking on the role of Hank Garland. Ali Larter co-stars as his wife, Evelyn.

Bieber, Jason Ehlers and Brent Boyd wrote the screenplay which follows Garland's life and career. Ray Scherr and Steve Vai arte the executive producers. According to a press release issued by Favored Nations, prior to Garland's death he was actively involved in the film's development.

Hank Garland joined the Grand Ol' Opry at 15 and rose to fame in the early 1950s as Nashville's premiere session guitarist. His immense, innovative talents grace the timeless recordings of music icons including Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline. In 1961, he startled the music world by jumping genres from country and pop to jazz with the release of Jazz Winds From A New Direction, a tour de force that to this day is considered an all-time classic jazz album. Later that same year, a crippling, near-fatal auto accident cut short his extraordinary ascent. Crazy's narrative is driven by Garland's stunning artistic triumphs and dramatic personal travails, and his passionate and stormy relationship with his wife Evelyn.)

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM CRY BABY

(now out for the first time on a legal issue, 92 Minute film from 1990 with Johnny Depp, Ricki Lake & Iggy Pop. Set in Baltimore in 1954 this nostalgic look at teen life in the 50s has become a cult movie....with a great soundtrack of original 50s tunes & modern 90s rockers from James Intveld & Rachel Sweet amongst others....with unissued scenes added, comes in wide-screen.
John Waters does a quirky spin on '50s nostalgia in Cry-Baby, his musical homage to Rebel Without a Cause and Romeo and Juliet. Set in Baltimore in 1954 at the birth of rock & roll, the film features Johnny Depp as Wade Cry-Baby Walker. Depp is pure charisma as a juvenile delinquent with a permanent tear slithering down his cheek, a reminder of his state-executed parents. In the depths of his despair appears goody-goody girl Allison (Amy Locane), who has a sexual crush on Cry-Baby. But Allison's Pat Boone-like boyfriend, Baldwin (Stephen E. Miller), the leader of the squares, is dead set against Cry-Baby and the rest of the juvenile delinquents and leads a revolt against them. In the resultant riot, the juvenile delinquents are blamed for the chaos, and Cry-Baby finds himself dispatched to reform school

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM GREAT BALLS OF FIRE

(1989 USA film about the life of Jerry Lee Lewis, Dennis Quaid plays 'The Killer', 107 Minutes long, extras incs..Theatrical Trailer & Widescreen & Standard screen.
Until its last 10 minutes or so, this filmed biography of controversial recording star Jerry Lee Lewis plays like a live-action cartoon. As played by Dennis Quaid, the killer is a very mixed-up individual: a saintly sinner, a world-wise naif, a skilled performer with zero sense of discipline, a loving husband who uses his wife for a punching bag. The story takes place during the years 1956 through 1958, as Lewis rises to the top of the charts with such hits as Crazy Arms, A Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On, and the title tune. Along the way, he falls in love with his second cousin Myra (Winona Ryder), eventually marrying the girl. When it is revealed that Myra is only 13 years old, Lewis is condemned as a molester and pervert by the public (his disastrous tour of England during this crisis is depicted in hilarious Tex Avery fashion). After establishing a brisk, satirical tone through most of the proceedings, the film plummets into heavy dramatics in its final portions, jarring disastrously with all that has gone before. Otherwise, Quaid is terrific as Lewis (expertly lip-synching to the original records,) and Ryder is equally good as the long-suffering Myra. Featured in the cast are Alec Baldwin as Jerry's cousin Jimmy Swaggart (the same!), Michael St. Gerard as Lewis' great rival Elvis, and Steve Allen as himself.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM HAIRSPRAY

(classic cult movie from the 80s, written & directed by John Waters. 92 Minutes in full colour starring Sonny Bono, Ruth Brown, Debbie Harry, Ricki Lake & Divine....great comedy set in Baltimore in the early 60s.Forever interested in the kitsch built into past eras, director John Waters chooses the TV dance show craze of the early '60s for his playful focus in Hairspray. Ricki Lake plays Tracy Turnblad, just one of several alliteratively named characters coming of age in 1962 Baltimore, where The Corny Collins Show is the most popular American Bandstand-type program, watched by hundreds of young dreamers each day after school. Being chosen to dance on it is the ultimate status symbol and every young girl's dream, and Tracy improbably wins a featured spot when she infiltrates a dance contest and makes a better impression than her favored rival, the catty Amber von Tussle (Colleen Fitzpatrick). Always able to have fun, even when she's being mocked by the jealous popular girls, Tracy wins the affections of Amber's boyfriend and soon begins leading a movement to integrate the dance show, which has previously featured blacks only in a once-weekly theme night. She is arrested following a demonstration at a local theme park owned by Amber's father (Sonny Bono), who subscribes to the same theory of race relations as The Corny Collins Show. Tracy's adventures are also filtered through her loving but eccentric parents (Divine and Jerry Stiller) and involve a humorous cultural clash with pot-smoking beatniks (Ric Ocasek and Pia Zadora)

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM LA BAMBA

(1987 USA film about Ritchie Valens with Lou Diamond Phillips as Valens, 109 Minutes, extras include, Cast Commentary, Los Lobos music video, Theatrical Trailer, Bios & Filmographies etc..Lou Diamond Phillips plays legendary 1950s rocker Ritchie Valens (born Ricardo Valenzuela), in this musical biography. Before scoring radio and concert success with hits like La Bamba, C'mon Let's Go, and Donna, Valens was a 15-year-old migrant worker who worked with his mother Connie (Rosana De Soto). Valens' half-brother Bob Morales (Esai Morales) is a vitriolic ex-con who roars into the migrant camp on his Harley after his release from jail. Valens' musical talents are encouraged by his family -- though later various members of his family react to his fame with varying degrees of pride and envy -- and he soon earns an audition with legendary record producer and former Artie Shaw clarinet player Bob Keane (Joe Pantoliano). Valens soon appears in an Alan Freed rock n' roll teen exploitation film, lip-synching his blistering recorded version of Ooh, My Head. When a romance with Donna Ludwig (Danielle von Zerneck) is forbidden by her conservative father, Valens pens the famous ballad that bears her name. Tours follow his chart success until the fatal plane crash that claimed the lives of Valens, The Big Bopper (aka J.P. Richardson), and Buddy Holly on February 3rd, 1959. The supporting cast is excellent with power-pop icon Marshall Crenshaw playing Buddy Holly singing Crying, Waiting, Hoping. Brian Setzer accurately portrays rocker Eddie Cochran, and Howard Hunstberry plays Jackie Wilson and sings Lonely Teardrops. Additional music is provided by Los Lobos, a band who traces their musical roots directly to Valens and other Mexican influences. Also making cameo appearances are the real-life Mrs. Connie Valenzuela and Bob Morales. Although not 100% historically accurate, La Bamba is much more accurate than 1978s The Buddy Holly Story. The feature turned a new generation on to the influential Tex-Mex rock that was an inspiration to such later rockers as The Bobby Fuller Four as well as Los Lobos.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM THE LOVELESS

(NOW LEGALLY AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME, WITH AUDIO COMMENTARY FROM WILLEM DEFOE, THEATRICAL TRAILER, POSTER & STILL GALLERIES.....super early 1980s cult rockin' movie, set circa 1959 in a small southern town in the USA, with rocker Robert Gordon & Hollywood star Willem Dafoe playing black leather clad out-law bikers. A great rockin' soundtrack with Robert Gordon performing a number of songs, 83 Minutes in colour. The period biker flick The Loveless marks the feature debut of both actor Willem Dafoe and writer/director Kathryn Bigelow (Strange Days). Bigelow co-wrote and co-directed the film with Monty Montgomery, who would go on to produce Wild at Heart and The Portrait of a Lady. Dafoe plays Vance, a stoic, leather-clad biker who rides into a small Southern town and to wait for some other bikers. Their plan is to travel on to Daytona for some racing, but they have to stick around the little truck stop town for a while to get one of their bikes repaired. Vance flirts a bit with Augusta (Liz Gans), a widowed waitress. She's the only local who's friendly to him and his gang. Contemplating living in such a depressed, isolated place, Vance tells her, I think your husband had the right idea. While the bikes are worked on, Vance and the gang, including the abrasive Davis (rockabilly musician Robert Gordon, who also composed the film's soundtrack) and his girlfriend, Debbie (Tina Lhotsky), spend the day in town, to the chagrin of the conservative residents. Vance hooks up with Telena (Marin Kanter), the rebellious teenage daughter of a rich redneck. Their little tryst creates even more tension, and the day ends with violence.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM ROADIE

(1980 colour movie starring Meatloaf & Art Carney, with live performances by ROY ORBISON, Hank Williams Jr., Asleep At The Wheel, Blondie & Alice Cooper. Roadie is a showbiz saga about the working slobs who make live pop-music performances happen. Texas good ol' boy Travis W. Redfish (pop singer Meat Loaf) drives a Shiner beer truck on his appointed rounds, but he becomes smitten with rock groupie Lola Bouillabase (Kaki Hunter), a roadie whose sole ambition in life is to bed her idol, Alice Cooper (playing himself). Travis' grizzled pappy, Corpus C. Redfish (Art Carney), feels disgusted by his son's lifestyle. After hearing that Cooper and his band are on tour, Lola sets out to catch up to them and offer her services, with Travis in pursuit. Along the way, they meet a number of pop-music stars -- Blondie, Asleep at the Wheel, Hank Williams Jr., Roy Orbison, and Ramblin' Jack Elliott -- who are all working on their own tours. Travis signs on, himself, as a groupie for a rock band, and is quickly dubbed greatest roadie of all time, but he soon realizes that he must return to Texas for the wedding of his sister and his best friend.
The film was marketed with the tagline Bands make it rock, but roadies make it roll.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM TEENAGE CRUISERS

(cult modern USA film from 1977. THIS FILM IS FOR ADULTS ONLY!!!!!!, AND FEATURES RUDE CATS & KITTENS.....such as Tony Conn, Christine Shaffer, Johnny Legend, John Holmes!!!, Jerry Sokorski. The great modern rockin' soundtrack comes from Chuck Higgins, Billy Zoom & The Bad Boys, Mac Curtis, Alvis Wayne, Ray Campi, Kid Thomas Charlie Feathers, Jackie Lee Cochran, Colin Winsky, Tony Conn, Johnny Legend
This 1970s XXX-rated film is an astounding blend of red-hot cruisin' cupcakes, stick-shift stoners with boners, and Mel Brooksian carnal comedy, all set to a revolutionary (at the time) star-studded rockabilly soundtrack! Serena and Lynnie are cruisin' and crazed for kicks. Wild Man Tony tape-records unwary teenage tarts. Babsy Beaudine, the notorious nuthouse nimble, escapes and chews up everything in sight. While whacked-out DJ Mambo Remus (Johnny Legend) spins the wet wax, John Holmes (as Moby) services the local surf kittens. As night falls, Van Nuys Blvd. is ablaze with raging hormones. Included are legendary performances by Colin Winski, Tony Conn, and Johnny Legend)

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM TELSTAR - THE JOE MEEK STORY

(TELSTAR tells the true story of one man's pioneering efforts in the world of popular music, and his tragic downfall. Record producer and song-writing impresario Joe Meek is renowned for breaking UK artists in the American market. His biggest success came in 1962 with The Tornados' hit 'Telstar' which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. This was the first time a British band had reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and catapulted Meek to industry-wide recognition. Meek was notable not only for his commercial triumphs, but also for his technical wizardry inside the recording studio. Despite possessing no actual musical ability, he revolutionised the way sound engineers made records by introducing innovative new techniques to the process. However, the success Meek enjoyed was short-lived and tainted by a catalogue of personal scandals. A drug-addicted, flamboyantly gay man (at a time when homosexuality was prohibited in the UK) with mounting debts and a fascination with the occult, Meek's frustration led him to commit murder and, finally, suicide. Director Nick Moran brings James Hicks' play TELSTAR to the big screen with actor Con O'Neill in the lead role and Kevin Spacey co-starring as Meek's business advisor, Major Banks

(2 original 1970s films set in the 1950s & 1960s. Starring Billy Fury, David Essex, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, Adam Faith, Paul Nicholas, Dave Edmunds & Karl Howman, That'll Be The Day has a great 1950s soundtrack and has become a real cult film for rockers.
THAT'LL BE THE DAY - Abandoned by his father at an early age, Jim MacLaine seems to have inherited the old man's restlessness. Despite his apparent intelligence, Jim decides not to take the exams that would pave his way to university; he begins to think that the life of a pop musician might be the thing for him...
The film was praised at the time for its gritty realism. Many of the characters were played by musicians who had lived through the era portrayed in the film including Ringo Starr, The Who's Keith Moon, John Hawken of The Nashville Teens and Billy Fury

STARDUST - Jim is now enjoying the nomadic gigs and groupies' life of The Stray Cats. When he achieves all his wildest dreams of international stardom, the sweet taste of success begins to turn sour..
Following on from the earlier film it is set in the mid 1960s/early 70's and follows the career of aspiring rock star Jim Maclaine. Maclaine has assembled a group of musicians and formed a band The Stray Cats, he seeks out his old friend Mike to become the band’s road manager. Mike quickly acquires a new van, accommodation and a recording session for the group. Maclaine soon becomes a massive star and is plunged into the centre of media attention. He indulges in casual sex and heavy drug use and the film documents the detrimental effects of this success on Maclaine and his relationship with his friends and colleagues. In particular, Maclaine’s long-standing friendship with manager Mike is now soured by money and success.

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM HANK WILLIAMS - THE SHOW HE NEVER GAVE

(Hank Williams remains one of the greatest figures of the county music world. Leaving a legacy of over 700 songs, performed more often than those of any other country composer, his unforced stage persona and heartfelt delivery formed a blueprint for country and western artists around the world.

Although he achieved near-legendary status and recognition in his own time, Hank Williams’ personal life was marked by adversity and upheaval. Domestic instability and lifelong, severe back pain increasingly led him to seek respite in alcohol and painkilling drugs. On January 1st, 1953, hours before a scheduled performance in Ohio, he was found dead in the back seat of his brand new Cadillac outside Oak Hill, West Virginia. He was just 29 years old.

In this critically acclaimed adaptation of Maynard Collins’ hugely successful stage production, Canadian country music veteran Sneezy Waters portrays Hank Williams in the final hours of his life. At the heart of the film is a powerful performance of Hank’s best-loved songs before a captivated live audience: it is 'the show he never gave.')

DVD: MOVIE THE LORDS OF FLATBUSH

(great 70s cult-movie, set in Brooklyn in the 1950s, the story revolves around blue jeans, black leather jackets, bad attitudes, cool dudes & hot chicks. Stars Henry 'The Fonz' Winkler, Sylvester Stallone & Perry King. Full-colour with loads of bonus features, menus, notes, trailers etc etc. This low-budget independent film by novice directors Stephen F. Verona and Martin Davidson is a slice-of-life elegy from the leather-jacket, bobby-soxer era of 1957, set in a Brooklyn high school. The film stands out for the appearance of up-and-coming actors (circa 1974) Sylvester Stallone, Henry Winkler, and Perry King (even Armand Assante has a bit role). Stallone, Winkler, King, and Paul Mace are members of a local neighbor social club called The Lords of Flatbush, and they spend their time exercising their hormones, hot-wiring a car, playing pool, and quaffing egg creams at the local candy store. The film finally focuses its interest on two of the lords. Chico (Perry King), owns a motorcycle and wheels over to see Jane Bradshaw (Susan Blakely), the daughter of an army colonel who, despite Chico's motorcycle, gives him the brush-off. Then there is the muscle-headed Stanley Rosiello (Sylvester Stallone), who, like Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, loves pigeons. He also loves Frannie (Maria Smith), with whom he has bedded down under the boardwalk one too many times, and now finds that she is pregnant and wants to get married. Skirting along the edges of the frame are Butchey Weinstein (Henry Winkler) and Wimpy Murgalo (Paul Mace), who, as second bananas, go along with Chico and Stanley as they adjust their testosterone to adult living)
