DVD: VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE 1st ROLLIN' RECORDS REVUE SHOW - THE BOSTON ARMS SATURDAY FEB, 28th 2009

(Last year at the Boston Arms, Tufnell Park, we held our first All-Dayer to feature the bands that were recording for the label. Luckilly for us, they all decided to turn up! A truly fantastic bunch of acts who know how to put on a show, so we asked Chris Magee and his film company, to capture it for us. Chris is a highly talented film maker whose talents are everywhere to be seen. He really came to prominence last year with the 'Havin' A Ball' DVD which was filmed over 5 days at the Rockabilly Rave, so after watching that Chris was first choice.

As for the acts, well this lot certainly don't play any tea dances. The Playboys, Hi-Voltage, The Excellos, The Frantix and The Paul Paterson Band, all play with real attitude, which is what you want from a band. Of course they're also top musicians as well, so you can't really ask for a lot more.

Being as this DVD is NTSC region free, it will play on any DVD player in the world. It also contains 28 performances of awesome quality!

Track listing:
THE PLAYBOYS - Summertime Rock, Flying Fish, Come Back Judy, Skippy Is A Sissy, Bloody Mary, Wail Baby Wail

HI-VOLTAGE - You Don't Love Me, Big Door, Movin' On, I Gotta Gun, I've Got A Thing About You Baby, Rock No More

THE EXCELLOS - Ramble, Catfish, Rockinitis, Running Shoes, Jump, Shake Your Hips

DVD: BO DIDDLEY / CHUCK BERRY - ROCK 'N' ROLL ALL STAR JAM

(In 1985, Bo Diddley put together a band that included Ron Wood, John Mayall, Mick Fleetwood, Kenny Jones, Carmine Appice, John Lodge, Ronnie Lane, Carl Wilson, and members of the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Chicago, Quiet Riot, and Three Dog Night. He cooked them all a barbecue dinner, and then they put on a show. It's a 55-minute R&B jamfest. Chuck Berry shows up in the middle of this film for a number or two, but--despite the title--it's Bo's show. Behind-the-scenes footage shows how Bo oversaw every detail of the music, even getting behind Kenny Jones's drum kit to show him exactly how a riff should go. Bo Diddley's songs are mostly about Bo Diddley the rock & roll legend, but the group is terrific (every rock & roll band should have four drummers!) and everyone is obviously having a ball--especially Wood, who spends the whole concert grinning like a school boy to be on stage with one of his heroes. --Geof Miller

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM - GO JOHNNY GO

(Go, Johnny, Go! was second and last of a proposed trio of jukebox movies built around and co-produced by DJ Alan Freed. He plays himself in this rags-to-riches tale, told in flashback, of a young rock & roll singer named Johnny Melody (Jimmy Clanton), whose rise from life in an orphanage where no one wanted him to his 'discovery' by Freed through an unsolicited demo recording sent to the disc jockey's office is told in 75 minutes, in a dramatic time frame that's impossible to determine. Along the way, Johnny meets a girl (Sandy Stewart) with whom he falls in love, and nearly gets himself arrested when it looks as though everything has turned against him. The plot is a threadbare reprise of the kind of juvenile delinquency-with-music stories that Elvis Presley had been doing, but it offers glimpses of several very worthwhile (and a couple of legendary) music acts of the era who were otherwise undocumented on film: Jimmy Clanton himself, who was one of the best white singers to come out of that New Orleans R&B/rock & roll sound; Sandy Stewart, who was (and is still, 40-plus years later) a serious vocal talent; Chuck Berry, in a pair of performing clips that are brilliant; Ritchie Valens, in his only film appearance, doing a hot rocking number called 'Oh, My Head'; Harvey Fuqua of the Moonglows; the Cadillacs, in a pair of killer comic-relief numbers; Jo-Ann Campbell; and Jackie Wilson, showing how little Michael Jackson actually brought to performing that was new more than 20 years later. No, Go, Johnny, Go! isn't A Hard Day's Night, but it is a lot of fun to watch, and is easily the best of Freed's handful of feature films, before his downfall in the payola scandal.

1959 MOVIE: Starring: Alan Freed, Jimmy Clanton, Sandy Stewart, Chuck Berry, Herb Vigran, Frank Wilcox, Barbara Woodell, Milton Frome, Joe Cranston, Inga Boling)

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM - ROCK YOU SINNERS

(Popular London radio DJ Johnny Laurence dreams of hosting his own television show. He meets with little success - until his assistant Pete persuades him that Rock ‘n’ Roll is where it’s at! Johnny and Pete put together a hit show featuring the hottest acts of the day, and Johnny becomes a star. There is a note of sadness amid the success, however: a misunderstanding has caused a rift between Johnny and his loyal girlfriend Carol. Fortunately, the couple are reunited and reconciled at the Brazil Coffee Bar - where their story is put into song!

Rock You Sinners provides a fascinating snapshot of the earliest days of British Rock ‘n’ Roll, with performances by Art Baxter and his Rockin’ Sinners, Tony Crombie and his Rockets, Dickie Bennett, Joan Small, Don Sollash and his Rockin’ Horses, ‘Curly’ Pat Barry, George ‘Calypso’ Browne, and Rory Blackwell and the Blackjacks. Jackie Collins and Oh Boy! host Tony Hall also appear in this rare musical feast from 1957.) (FIRST EVER LEGAL RELEASE)

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM - PRIVATE BUCKAROO

(The army looks like a pretty fun place to be in this goofy curio from 1942. What there is of a story follows some lucky recruits as they go through a basic training that consists mostly of attending USO dances headlined by the Andrews Sisters (the hit girl group of their day) and the hot trumpet of bandleader Harry James. There's also some fancy footwork from 'The Jivin' Jack & Jills'. Drill Sergeant Shemp Howard tries hard to convince the boys to take the war seriously, but new recruit Dick Foran is much too busy wooing the Colonel's daughter (Jennifer Holt). The film concludes with a rousing montage of war mobilisation footage as the Andrews Sisters sing 'We've Got a Job to Do'. Other songs include 'Six Jerks in a Jeep', 'Tell it to the Marines', and 'You're in the Army Now'. This is a very interesting mix of comedy, songs, and enlistment propaganda from veteran comedy director Eddie Cline (THE BANK DICK, MY LITTLE CHICKADEE) - 68 Minutes, black & white)
