A ROCKET IN MY POCKET - THE HIPSTER'S GUIDE TO ROCKABILLY MUSIC

(Here are a couple of fistfuls of tracks from the wild side of rockabilly. Over the years many 50s cuts have been issued under the rockabilly banner that would have been better described as country or hillbilly. These, however, are the real deal: hopped-up, whiskey-fuelled songs of teenage rebellion, sung by untamed rockers who probably never expected their careers to last the week.

Alongside acknowledged classics of the genre such as 'Put Your Cat Clothes On' by Carl Perkins, there are rare rockin' one-offs such as the frantic bass-slapping 'Don't Be Gone Long' by Bob Doss or the remarkable 'Wash Machine Boogie' by the Echo Valley Boys - the world's finest rockin' hymn to the romantic joys of household appliances.

The CD covers the whole rockabilly spectrum, with tracks from prime rockin' labels such as Sun, Starday, Meteor and Columbia, plus tiny imprints such as Lilac.

Tied-in with this release is the publication of a 300-page book, also called A Rocket In My Pocket - the Hipster's Guide To Rockabilly by Max Décharné (Serpent's Tail), the first comprehensive history of the entire rockabilly genre to appear for twenty years. Max has compiled the Ace CD to complement the book, and has also written the sleevenotes. Reviews are expected in all major newspapers and magazines, in addition to radio interviews with the author.

This is the first time on CD for some of these tracks, many of them favourites at rockin' clubs in the UK and around the world. The CD's title comes from Jimmy Lloyd's 1958 classic 'I Got A Rocket In My Pocket', included here alongside frantic movers such as 'The Raging Sea' by Gene Maltais or the gutbucket hill-country sounds Rocky Bill Ford's 'Mad Dog In Town'. There's also a track from the cat who started it all, Elvis Presley - whose 'Mystery Train' inspired a whole regiment of young musicians to find a cheap studio and get down and wail. He's on the cover of both our CD and the book, too.

An ideal introduction for anyone new to genre, but with enough rare tracks to please the long-term, hardcore rockabilly fan.

Track listing:
1. SHE'S THE ONE THAT'S GOT IT - Allen Page, 2. JELLO SAL - Benny Ingram, 3. DON'T BE GONE LONG - Bob Doss, 4. PUT YOUR CAT CLOTHES ON - Carl Perkins, 5. GET WITH IT - Charlie Feathers with Jody & Jerry, 6. HOW CAN YOU BE MEAN TO ME - Dale Vaughn, 7. SNAKE EYED MAMA - Don Cole, 8. WASH MACHINE BOOGIE - Echo Valley Boys (w Bill Browning), 9. RED BLUE JEANS & CHECKERBOARD SOCKS

(For our summer collection we have designed a wardrobe of rock'n'roll odes to strict dress codes. In other words a homage to teenage style of the 1950s.

While avoiding the pitfall of including obvious hits like 'Short Shorts', or the more schlock items of the era like 'Pink Shoe Laces', it does include 'Blue Suede Shoes', the grand-daddy of the genre and an influence on the whole collection. Who would have thought this is the first time for this track on Ace?

Some worthy obscurities like 'Yellow Pants (And Blue Suede Shoes)' should appeal to the curious. This CD will catch the eye of both rockabilly fans and slaves to early R&B.

Most lovers of these type of comps are attracted to the thematic idea. Where Ace audiences have lapped up Cats, swooned on Hallowe'en, poked fun at Death, they will love the novel idea of dressing up to go out to this collection.

A stunning photograph by Ken Russell from has been chosen for the cover, and artwork of the period adds the required eye-catching finishing touch. And a second volume to follow will cover 60s styles.

Track listing:
1. RED BLUE JEANS AND A PONY TAIL - Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps, 2. BLUE SUEDE SHOES - Carl Perkins, 3. STRAIGHT SKIRT - Gene Summers & His Rebels, 4. DIG THEM SQUEAKY SHOES - Frank Andy Starr, 5. CALIFIA - THE SONGS OF LEE HAZELWOOD

(''Califia: The Songs Of Lee Hazlewood'' is the latest addition to Ace Records' high-profile Songwriter series. Comprising fan favourites and obscure collectables in equal measure, the set spans Sanford Clark's Top 10 hit of 1956 'The Fool' (built on a memorable contribution from guitar wizard Al Casey) to 1970's German language interpretation of 'And I Loved You Then' by transcontinental pop princess Peggy March (a song from Hazlewood's ''13'' LP)

Hazlewood enjoys a strong cult following, lauded by hipsters such as Primal Scream, Nick Cave, Beck, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Pulp and Sonic Youth. His performance at London's Meltdown Festival in 1999 found him backed by members of Stereolab and the High Llamas, while the ''Total Lee!'' tribute album of 2002 had the indie cognoscenti tripping over each other to record his compositions.

One of pop's genuine originals, Hazlewood was a brilliant and endlessly versatile songwriter, equally at home with twangin' rock'n'roll (dig Don Cole's wild 'Snake Eyed Mama'), country, psychedelia, R&B, folk, easy listening, burlesque or blues. His songs are truly beyond categorisation. He was also a pioneer in the mysterious art of record production and taught a thing or two to the young Phil Spector, who hung around paying close attention while Hazlewood crafted magnificent guitar instrumentals for Duane Eddy. Of the 25 tracks on ''Califia'', Hazlewood wrote each one and produced all but four.

As a performer, he possessed an instantly recognisable bass drawl perfectly suited to his lyrical tales of low-rent heartache, self-deprecating comedy, picturesque nostalgia and mystical cowboy psychedelia. He sings on four cuts on this collection, including the folksy Shacklefords' recording of 'The City Never Sleeps At Night', a song written for Nancy Sinatra. As Dionne Warwick was to Burt Bacharach, Petula Clark to Tony Hatch and the Shangri-Las to Shadow Morton, Nancy was Lee Hazlewood's perfect muse. The lushly orchestrated opening duet 'Lady Bird' - one of the dozens of pop masterpieces that resulted from their partnership - was personally selected for this compilation by the lady herself.

A companion volume of Hazlewood-penned instrumentals is also in the Ace pipeline, so watch this space. Meanwhile, check out the rest of our Songwriter series, which includes compilations based on the works of Randy Newman, Jackie DeShannon, Neil Diamond, Goffin & King, Burt Bacharach and many others.

Track listing:
1. LADY BIRD - Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood, 2. NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET - Suzi Jane Hokom, 3. SWEET RIDE - Dusty Springfield, 4. THE REBEL KIND - Dino, Desi & Billy, 5. THE FOOL - Sanford Clark With Al Casey, 6. HAVE LOVE, WILL TRAVEL - The Sharps, 7. SNAKE EYED MAMA - Don Cole, 8. THE GIRL ON DEATH ROW - Lee Hazlewood with Duane Eddy, 9. THE FIREBALLS - EXOTIC GUITARS FROM THE CLOVIS VAULTS

(The latest in our series of limited edition collectors' items features Clovis, New Mexico's favourite sons. This is a limited pressing of 1500 copies.

When 'Wide World Hits by The String-A-Longs' was issued by Atco in 1968, buyers could hardly have been aware that they were actually purchasing an instrumental LP by The Fireballs. The band were simply masquerading under the name of the String-A-Longs at Norman Petty's behest.

This album is the centrepiece of this CD, plus the non-album track 'Popi' which was also issued under the String-A-Longs name. After much searching in the Clovis vaults we have been fortunate enough to discover an additional five titles - versions of the Doors' 'Light My Fire', the Supremes' 'Love Child', Johnny Nash's 'Hold Me Tight', Classic IV's 'Stormy' and Otis Redding's 'Dock Of The Bay' - which were originally recorded for the project but not included on the album. Here they are correctly credited to the Fireballs or George Tomsco.

We've also discovered nine more previously unreleased Fireballs' tracks, making this a veritable feast for the instrumental fan. All embellished by the experts at Pipeline Magazine's authorative notes.

Track listing:
The Fireballs: 1. TORQUETTE, 2. POQUITO, 3. MOTIVATION, 4. STORMY, 5. FRISKY, 6. CORIANDER, 7. HOLD ME TIGHT, 8. SASHAY, 9. LOVE CHILD, 10. LITTLE TOY - Guitars Inc, The Fireballs: 11. (2 CD set, 39 tracks, Here is a double CD that acts as a soundtrack to noted music and travel writer Garth Cartwright's book More Miles Than Money: Journeys Through American Music (Serpents Tail). The compilation gathers a huge variety of music; many never released in Europe and largely unknown in the US. More Miles Than Money features blues, soul, country, funk, rock'n'roll, Tex-Mex, Native American song and powwow, mariachi, banda-rap and more, providing a vast overview of the richness of America's regional music forms.

DEEP SHADOWS - THE BEST OF KENT BALLADS

(It has been some time since Kent has championed a soul ballad collection. Southern soul has been well served but the general great soul ballad has usually been compiled as part of label stories that majored in dance music and soul fans who don't boogaloo may have decided to give them a miss.

The songs and performances on this CD are very strong indeed and though it's not an 'ultimate' package it is really excellent music with some recordings that will surprise and impress even the most die-hard collector.

45s by the Ravins, Austin Taylor and Ray Pollard are very scarce and extremely expensive because of the interest in their flips by Northern Soul collectors. Little Ann, the Shaladons and Hesitations tracks have only previously been available on relatively obscure Kent CDs.

To tantalise our dedicated fans we've added four tracks that have never been on CD before. The previously unissued Jeanette Jones track is a major find. Austin Taylor, Danny White and the Quotations show the world how New Yorkers could deliver terrific soul ballads too, the latter sounding unbelievably fresh from the recently found master tape.

A few tracks of stand-out deep soul had been on CDs that are now deleted so this was the perfect CD to place the Charmells, LV Johnson and Johnny Gilliam tracks.

It's also the best of Kent, so killer ballads by Lolleatta Holloway, Act 1, Sam Dees and Jaibi (the single version from master tape for the first time) reflect on what a great slow soul history Kent has.

Track listing:
1. CRY TO ME - Loleatta Holloway, 2. I'VE DONE IT AGAIN - The Charmels, 3. WHAT HAVE YOU GOT TO GAIN (BY LOSING ME) - Jeanette Jones, 4. GOTTA FIND A WAY - The Hesitations, 5. THERE'S ANOTHER IN MY LIFE - Phillip Mitchell, 6. YOU MUST LEAVE HER BECAUSE YOU LOVE HER - The Paramount Four, 7. SHOWDOWN - The Shaladons, 8. SEEING IS BELIEVING - LV Johnson, 9. YOU DIDN'T LOVE ME ANYHOW - Act I, 10. WHETHER IT'S RIGHT OR WRONG - Jackie Lee & Delores Hall, 11. YOU GOT ME - Jaibi, 12. I WON'T BE SUCH A FOOL ANY MORE - The Modettes, 13. NO MORE LIKE ME - Ray Pollard, 14. IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU - The Quotations, 15. CAN'T YOU SEE I'M BUSY - Austin Taylor, 16. NO ONE CAN TAKE THE PLACE OF YOU - The Ravins, 17. I LOVE MY BABY - Tommy & Eddie, 18. THE TAG - Sam Dees, 19. SWEET LOVING WOMAN - Garland Green, 20. YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE SOMEONE - Johnny Gilliam, 21. YOU MUST BE LOSING YOUR MIND - Jimmy Raye, 22. I'M A LONELY MAN - Bobby Wilburn, 23. HOW LONG CAN THIS LAST - Debbie Taylor, 24. DEEP SHADOWS - Little Ann)

JOHNNY BURNETTE - THE BALLADS OF

(The softer side of a rock 'n' roll god! Includes two early '60s classics, 'You're Sixteen' (later revived by Ringo Starr) and 'Dreamin''. Fabulous early '60s Los Angeles pop, produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett. -- These days, Johnny Burnette is justly renowned as one of the all-time wildest rockabillies, who made maybe the greatest-ever rockabilly recordings. But there was another side to Johnny Burnette. After his rockabilly singles failed, he moved to Los Angeles, wrote songs for Ricky Nelson, and soon became a teen idol in his own right. This set includes his five Hot 100 entries from the early '60s, all produced by the legendary Snuff Garrett with the cream of the Los Angeles session men, plus rarities, obscurities, and simply great performances. In addition to his own fine songs and big hits, this compilation includes classic songs like 'My Special Angel', 'Please Help Me I'm Falling', 'Roses Are Red', 'Moody River', and many others. There's a bonus in the shape of 'Clown Shoes', a neglected classic written by James Marcus Smith, who would later find fame in England as P. J. Proby. -- Johnny Burnette died in a boating accident in 1964. He'd led a short, often wild, life, but this is the other side of his considerable legacy.

Track listing:
1. Dreamin' 2. Clown Shoes 3. My Special Angel 4. Please Help Me I'm Falling 5. Shattered Dreams 6. I'll Never Love Again 7. Love Me 8. You're Sixteen 9. I Just Found Out 10. RICK NELSON - THE LAST TIME AROUND - 1970 - 1982 (DUE EARLY SEPT)

(7-CD boxed set, LP-size, with 144-page hardcover book. 134 tracks. Playing time: 453:33 -- The final installment in Bear Family's documentation of Rick Nelson's recording career includes all of his late career recordings from 1970-1982. Many fans insist that his last years were his best! This set includes his last major hit, 'Garden Party', and it features the complete 1978 'Back To Vienna' sessions produced by Al Kooper. Most of the songs were previously unreleased! For the first time, the complete 1979 'The Memphis Sessions' songs in their originally-recorded form! Many rare and unreleased songs, including the long-rumored, never-heard 1974 studio versions of Mystery Train and California Free. -- 'The Last Time Around' brings to a close Bear Family's definitive 3-box overview of Rick Nelson's recording career. Still with his pioneering country-rock Stone Canyon Band, this set begins with four albums - 'Rick Sings Nelson,' 'Rudy The Fifth,' 'Garden Party' and 'Windfall'. 'Garden Party,' of course, featured his last major hit in which he announced his refusal to become an oldies act. The set continues with the 'Intakes' album recorded for Epic, and 'Playing To Win,' originally released on Capitol. And there's more! For the first time in their entirety, Bear Family presents two previously unreleased albums: 'Back To Vienna' produced in Hollywood by Al Kooper with a band of all-star session players; and 'The Memphis Sessions,' with a sympathetic band of (mostly) locals, produced by Larry Rogers. And still more surprises include an entire, live performance recorded with the second-edition Stone Canyon Band heard here for the first time, as well as several single-only, previously unreleased studio sessions, and even a few commercials. -- The 144-page album-sized hardcover book includes dozens of pictures and other artwork; a full sessionography; and a 25,000-word history by Todd Everett, author of the acclaimed notes for the earlier volumes in this series, 'An American Dream' and 'For You.' With the compelling first-person accounts, you'll hear the real stories behind the sessions. -- Though Rick's later recordings assembled here didn't match the commercial impact of his earlier songs, they certainly maintained the quality. Rick went out rocking!

SI CRANSTOUN - SKINNY JEANS (includes the song DYNAMO)

(THIS CD CONTAINS THE HOTTEST DANCE FLOOR JIVER SINCE GO CAT GO HIT THESE SHORES. DYNAMO IS THE TRACK THAT SOUNDS LIKE JACKIE WILSON AND HAS PACKED THE DANCE FLOORS SINCE BEING PLAYED AT THE RHYTHM RIOT FESTIVAL IN NOVEMBER 2009 - NOW AVAILABLE ON THIS CD - other tracks are: Skinny Jeans, Sing Her Praises, Chocoholic, The Brazilian, Chick Flick, The Thames River Song, Young As You Feel, Miss Santa Claus, Kiss On These Lips

Si Cranstoun is the original modern day underground superstar of the south London streets, and his explosive debut solo single is certain to sky rocket bringing a new dimension, that harks back to the golden era of rock n roll, into the pop mainstream once more. 'Dynamo' has an infectious groove and Si's vocals are just too darn supreme for superlatives.

To claim that your voice has been inspired by the great old singers is a promotion tool that many retro styled singers adopt. However, if you put Stevie Wonder on after James Morrison or play Otis Redding after Paolo Nutini you've got an obvious knock out in the first verse round.... But, put Jackie Wilson or Sam Cooke on after Si Cranstoun and you've actually got a genuinely matched musical fight!

Si Cranstoun is much like the old great band leaders too, not only vocally but his love and passion for music also see him write, produce, dance and record all of his own tracks too. As half of dynamic duo The Dualers ( 2 top 30 hits 'Kiss On The Lips & Truly Madly Deeply) Si was personally trained to the level of 'Grand Master' in the old school art of song writing for 5 years by Grammy award winning Graham Lyle (writer for Michael Jackson, Tina Turner). Aside from playing guitar and delivering thunderous vocals live on stage with his band, Si prides himself on high octane, energetic dance routines that get compared to an original cross between Justin Timberlake and Gene Kelly.

Si & his band founded this fresh new project last year and have already sold out The Fairfield Halls and landed some major festivals this year including the headline act in Germany at The Big Rhythm Rumble and The Rhythm Riot in Sussex sharing the bill with Jackie Wilson's son. Si's band features some of London most revered musicians including Mike Watts on Drums - (drummer for Grammy nominee James Hunter) and Stewart Pannaman on double Bass - (American Doo Wop legend Nappy Brown's Bass player).)

CONWAY TWITTY - THE BALLADS OF

(They called him 'The Best Friend A Song Ever Had.' Here are 33 reasons why. An exclusive compilation drawn from Conway's early years, before his country stardom which includes the original version of the worldwide mega-hit 'It's Only Make Believe'! A companion to Bear Family's top-selling 'Conway Twitty Rocks'! -- The statistic books rank Conway Twitty among the Top 5 country artists of all time, but before he was a country singer, he was a rock 'n' roll balladeer. One of the best, in fact. This exclusive compilation is drawn from his recordings for Sun, Mercury, and MGM Records between 1956 and 1963, and includes his original version of one of the greatest power ballads of all time, 'It's Only Make Believe'. It also includes 'Lonely Blue Boy', a song originally written for Elvis, as well as 'Is A Bluebird Blue', the first hit by the great soul songwriter, Dan Penn. Mixed in among Conway's originals are stellar versions of classic songs like 'You'll Never Walk Alone', 'You Win Again', 'C'Est Si Bon', and 'What Am I Living For'. -- Country fans need to explore where Conway found his way with a song, and this is the compilation that shows how and where he developed his unique style. -- Rock 'n' roll fans need this for their quieter moments. And fans of great singing need this compilation to discover why Conway Twitty was called 'The Best Friend A Song Ever Had.'

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS - TEXAS BLUES GIANT

(There was nobody quite like Lightnin' Hopkins. John Lee Hooker may have made more records but even he couldn't match the consistently high level of Hopkins' creativity. He and his vast repertoire represented the epitome of Texas country blues. No question. He came from a musical family and his unique guitar style was fashioned from the traditions he learned in the presence of Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, a distant cousin. His guitar both underscored and complemented the songs he drew from his own life and the lives of those around him. His recording career began in 1946 and hardly paused for the next three decades.

In that time, he created an amazing miscellany of original blues, starting with ‘Katie Mae Blues', through ‘Shotgun Blues', ‘Automobile Blues', ‘Long Way From Texas', ‘Dirty House Blues', ‘Sad News From Korea' and ‘Ain't It A Shame' to his last major commercial sessions for the New York-based Herald label in April 1954, which make up the entire third disc here. Songs like ‘Don't Think 'Cause You're Pretty', ‘Nothin' But The Blues', ‘Lonesome In Your Home', ‘Sittin' Down Thinkin'' and ‘Lightnin' Don't Feel Well' showed that the wellspring of his inspiration hadn't dried up. Nor was he always serious, as ‘Lightnin's Boogie', ‘Grandma's Boogie' and ‘Hopkins Sky Hop' proved.

Lightnin' Hopkins went on from these recordings to become an international blues star before his death in January 1982. He may have travelled in foreign climes but his heart was always in Houston's Dowling Street, amongst the friends and neighbours whose lives he memorialised in his songs.
