With a career in the Merchant Navy, a second hand guitar, an anonymous Calypso bar far far away – this is how the The Tommy Steele Story begins. THE DUKE WORE JEANS (1958)In The Duke Wore Jeans Tommy plays the dual roles of Prince and Pauper: as a Cockney Lad bearing an uncanny resemblance to a local Duke, Tommy is sent in the latter’s place to woo a princess from an oil-rich South American monarchy. Faced with the interference of conspiring politicians, not to mention the Princess’ own stubbornness, will Tommy win her over with his serenades? Plot In anticipation of Elvis Presley's Kissin' Cousins, British rock-and-roll idol Tommy Steele plays a dual role in The Duke Wore Jeans. Tony (Steele) is a young nobleman who wants to wriggle out of an arranged marriage-especially since he's already taken a bride in secret. Upon meeting a carefree bloke named Tommy (also Steele), Tony talks his new friend into trading places. In a twinkling, Tommy is jetting off to the mythical banana republic of Rittalia, where he promptly gets mixed up in political intrigue. Playing the pretty princess whom Tony/Tommy is slated to marry is June Laverick, while Michael Medwin provides laughs as the obligatory comical valet. Cast * Tommy Steele - Tony Whitecliffe/Tommy Hudson * June Laverick - Princess Maria * Michael Medwin - Cooper * Alan Wheatley - King of Ritallia * Eric Pohlmann - Bastini Noel Hood - Lady Marguerite; Mary Kerridge - Queen; Ambrosine Phillpotts - Duchess; Clive Morton - Lord Whitecliffe; Elwyn Brook-Jones - Bartolomeo; Arnold Diamond - MC; Philip Leaver - Factory Manager; Susan Travers - Stewardess; Cyril Chamberlain! TOMMY THE TOREADOR (1959)Co-starring comedy great Sid James and Janet Munro Tommy The Toreador is full to the rafter with laughs and features a rockin’ latin soundtack. IT’S ALL HAPPENING (1963) It’s All Happening sees Tommy as a young man thwarted at work and in love, until he decides to stage a concert to save the orphanage in which he himself grew up. An unexpected near disaster provides an opportunity to prove his true worth, both as a singer, and as a human being) U.K OPTIMUM ![]() Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM A SWINGIN' AFFAIR (If only every film started with Dick Dale playing 'Miserlou'! What a way to kick off a movie, and this is before the credits even roll! The story surrounds Johnny Kowalski (played by William Wellman Jr) who although enrolled as a student at college, has a secret identity as a middleweight boxer known as 'Kid Gallant'. Johnny is keen to climb the society ladder and mix with the rich and influential, but he must keep his boxing career a secret as boxers are regarded as plain pieces of meat to those he's trying to impress. Johnny even has a girlfriend who knows all about his boxing career but pretends not to know her to preserve his secret identity. An unusual theme for a teen flick of the time, which is held together by the great Dick Dale's thundering string plucking which pounds throughout.) DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM BE MY GUEST (79 Minute black & white film, shot in Brighton in the early 60s, starring David Hemmings, Avril Angers & Joyce Blair. The Soundtrack comes from Jerry Lee Lewis, The Nashville Teens, The Zephyrs, Kenny & The Wranglers, The Plebs & The Niteshades The film is notable for the appearance of Steve Marriott who started out as a child actor before giving up a promising acting career to help form successful rock groups Small Faces and Humble Pie; and for the appearance of Jerry Lee Lewis who was at the peak of his career at the time of filming. It was released as a B movie to support the Morecambe and Wise feature film The Intelligence Men. The film was a follow-up to the commercially successful Live It Up!.Noted American rock music producer Shel Talmy coordinated the film's musical score, Dave Martin (David Hemmings) and his mates once again find themselves dealing with the tricky side of the music business in this sequel to the British pop musical Live It Up. Dave has become interested in writing, and has a lead on a job with a newspaper in the seaside community of Brighton. As luck would have it, his parents Herbert (Ivor Salter) and Margaret (Diana King) are also moving to Brighton, having inherited a guest house there that they've decided to take over as the family business. En route to Brighton, Dave meets Erica (Andrea Monet), a pretty girl from the United States who is going to Brighton to audition for a job as a dancer. She is lacking accommodations, so Dave offers to put her up at the family's new guest house, though Herbert and Margaret at first believe their son has less than honorable intentions. When Erica's audition falls through, she opts to stay on in Brighton, and she's soon joined by Dave's old pals Phil (John Pike) and Ricky (Stephen Marriot), who were his partners in the beat group the Smart Alecks. Publicity friendly impresario Hilton Bass (David Healy) arrives in town looking for the Brighton Sound, which he's convinced will be the next big thing after the success of Merseybeat. Dave asks his pals to re-form the Smart Alecks to enter the talent competition Bass is staging, but he's disqualified when he learns the paper he's working for is helping to sponsor the contest. However, Dave thinks he may have struck upon a story when he uncovers evidence that suggests Bass has rigged the contest to favor a group he's already signed to a deal. DVD: SOUNDYTACK/FILM BEACH PARTY (original 1964 Beach movie in colour starring Dick Dale & The Deltones, Frankie Avalon, Annette & Bob Cummings - first of these hip-shakin' Beach movies The movie starts off with an anthropologist, Professor Robert Orwell Sutwell (Robert Cummings) secretly studying the wild mating habits of Southern California teenagers that hang out at the beach and use strange surfing jargon. After he temporarily paralyzes Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck), the leader of the local outlaw motorcycle gang, who was making unwanted advances on Dolores (Annette Funicello), Dolores develops a crush on the Professor. Her surfing boyfriend Frankie (Frankie Avalon), the local Big Kahuna, becomes jealous and begins flirting with Ava, a foreign waitress. Meanwhile Marianne (Dorothy Malone) develops a crush on the Professor. Ava also develops a crush for Eric Von Zipper. The music in Beach Party was written specifically for the film and featured a score that picked up several cues from the songs used - a common move for most musicals, but a rarity for a B-grade studio teen film filled with pop songs - even today.[2] Les Baxter composed this score, as well as most of the films that followed, including Sergeant Deadhead, Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine and Fireball 500. Gary Usher and Roger Christian wrote three songs that appear in the film: the title track, performed by Avalon and Funicello; and Swingin' and a-Surfin' and Secret Surfing Spot, both performed by Dick Dale and the Del Tones. Bob Marcucci and Russ Faith wrote Don't Stop Now, performed by Avalon. Guy Hemric and Jerry Styner wrote two songs for Funicello featured in the film: Treat Him Nicely, which Funicello performs while harmonizing with herself; and Promise Me Anything (But Give Me Love) performed off-screen. DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM THE BOYS (great black & white 1962 UK juvenile delinquent film, with The Shadows supplying the soundtrack, Stars Jess Conrad, Richard Todd, Robert Morley, Dudley Sutton, Wilfred Bramble, Roy Kinnear, Patrick McGhee amongst others. Tunes from The Shadows include: The Boys, Girls, Sweet Dreams Four teddy boys are charged with the murder of a night watchman. Robert Morley is the defense attorney who tries to convince the jury to render a charitable verdict. Prosecuting attorney Richard Todd is unmoved; his job is to prove that the boys aren't the innocent victims of society they're made out to be. There is a very good use of flashbacks during the testimony scenes in this engaging court room drama. Jess Conrad, Dudley Sutton, Felix Aylmer, Ronald Lacey, Tony Garnett, Wilfred Brambell PERSONNEL Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Brian Locking, Brian Bennett; with Norrie Paramor (orch; & female chorus) on THEME FROM THE BOYS The Shadows were back in contention in the EP market with a collection of fresh material, commissioned for the Galaworld film The Boys, and they earned themselves a chart-topper in the process. Three of the four numbers were penned by group members, with jazz pianist Bill McGuffie2 contributing the exquisite SWEET DREAMS. If the film has not stood the test of time3, the music certainly has, THE BOYS in particular, which is the most commonly encountered EP track on CD compilations a great slab of pure rock instrumental music as Rob Bradford5 has aptly termed it. Though not as popular over the years, the matching THEME FROM THE BOYS, provided with orchestral and choral overdubs under Norrie Paramor’s skilful direction, is no less accomplished a piece Cast * Richard Todd - Victor Webster, prosecuting counsel * Robert Morley - Montgomery, defence counsel * Dudley Sutton - Stan Coulter * Ronald Lacey - Billy Herne .* Tony Garnett - Ginger Thompson .* Jess Conrad - Barney Lee .* Felix Aylmer - The Judge .* Wilfrid Brambell - Robert Brewer (as Wilfred Bramble) .* Allan Cuthbertson - Randolph St. John (as Alan Cuthbertson) .* Colin Gordon - Gordon Lonsdale .* Wensley Pithey - Mr. Coulter (as Wensley Athey) .* Kenneth J. DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM CATCH US IF YOU CAN (FIRST LEGAL ISSUE OF THIS CLASSIC 1965 BEAT FILM in black & white film starring THE DAVE CLARK FIVE, Barbara Ferris, Lenny Davidson, Yootha Joyce & Rick Huxley. Dave Clark stars as a stuntman who gives up the rat-race so see the real world along with his mates (the band). Hipsters & Beatniks a go go )John Boorman makes his directorial debut with this 1960s cult classic in which Dave Clark stars as a stuntman who gives up the rat-race to see the real world, along with his four friends (played by the Dave Clark Five Band). On his travels he picks up a pretty model who’s also sick of the humdrum, money driven world of advertising and decides to come along for the ride. On a sunny island they mix with beatniks and society hipsters while singing classics beat hits during a wild weekend, as agents, ad men and the national press try to catch them…if they canDuring the filming of a TV commercial for a Meat For Go campaign set in London's Smithfields Market, Steve, disillusioned by the inanity of his job, absconds in an E-type Jag (one of the props) with a young actress/model, Dinah (played by Barbara Ferris). They make their way across a wintry southern England towards the island,(Burgh Island) off the coast of Devon, that Dinah is contemplating buying (presumably to escape the pressures of her celebrity as the Butcher Girl on the back of the TV meat advertising campaign). This act of rebellion is cynically exploited by the advertising executive behind the campaign, Leon Zissell (played by David de Keyser), who deputes two of his henchmen to pursue the fleeing couple. On their journey, Steve and Dinah encounter first a group of proto-hippies (squatting in MOD-owned buildings on Salisbury Plain), and then an unhappily-married middle-aged couple (the brilliant duo of Yootha Joyce and Robin Bailey) in the opulent surroundings of Bath's Royal Crescent. (Joyce and Bailey's scenes are both the funniest and most poignant in the film.) Steve also plans to visit his boyhood hero, Louie (David Lodge), whose youth club in London's East End he attended, and who has since relocated to Devon. Having fled the police (and Leon Zissell's henchmen) after a fancy-dress party in the Roman baths, Steve and Dinah (with the rest of Steve's gang - and the police - in hot pursuit) make their way towards Devon. Steve's encounter with Louie is disappointing. Louie recognises Dinah instantly (because of her TV celebrity), but fails to recognise Steve, and misremembers his name, even after be Cast Dave Clark ... Steve Barbara Ferris ... DVD: SOUNDTRACK/FILM COUNTRY MUSIC HOLIDAY (1958 black & white movie -'' a jumpin' jamboree of the homespun fun & music that's sweepin' the country', starring: Ferlin Husky, June Carter, Faron Young, The Jordanaires, Drifting Johnny Miller, The LaDell Sisters, Bernie Nee, Jesse White, Zsa Zsa Gabor - 81 minutes Though produced on a shoestring, Country Music Holiday has a lot more going for it than most popular-music melanges of the 1950s. Ferlin Husky stars as Verne Brand, a talented hillbilly warbler who is discovered by fast-talking Sonny Moon (Jesse White). Verne's rise to the top of country-western fame is compromised by the machinations of a predatory Hungarian lass (Zsa Zsa Gabor) who owns 50 percent of the boy's contract. The film boasts some of the strangest casting of any film of its era: Rocky Graziano, for example, costars as a savvy record-company executive, while Patty Duke is seen as Ferlin Husky's kid sister! In addition to Husky, Country Music Holiday offers such rural favorites as June Carter, The Jordanaires, Drifting Johnny Miller, Lonzo & Oscar, the La Dell Sisters and Bernie Nee.
