RED BLUE JEANS & CHECKERBOARD SOCKS (For our summer collection we have designed a wardrobe of rock'n'roll odes to strict dress codes. In other words a homage to teenage style of the 1950s. While avoiding the pitfall of including obvious hits like 'Short Shorts', or the more schlock items of the era like 'Pink Shoe Laces', it does include 'Blue Suede Shoes', the grand-daddy of the genre and an influence on the whole collection. Who would have thought this is the first time for this track on Ace? Some worthy obscurities like 'Yellow Pants (And Blue Suede Shoes)' should appeal to the curious. This CD will catch the eye of both rockabilly fans and slaves to early R&B. Most lovers of these type of comps are attracted to the thematic idea. Where Ace audiences have lapped up Cats, swooned on Hallowe'en, poked fun at Death, they will love the novel idea of dressing up to go out to this collection. A stunning photograph by Ken Russell from has been chosen for the cover, and artwork of the period adds the required eye-catching finishing touch. And a second volume to follow will cover 60s styles. Track listing: 1. RED BLUE JEANS AND A PONY TAIL - Gene Vincent & The Blue Caps, 2. BLUE SUEDE SHOES - Carl Perkins, 3. STRAIGHT SKIRT - Gene Summers & His Rebels, 4. A ROCKET IN MY POCKET - THE HIPSTER'S GUIDE TO ROCKABILLY MUSIC (DELAYED UNTIL THE END OF AUGUST) (Here are a couple of fistfuls of tracks from the wild side of rockabilly. Over the years many 50s cuts have been issued under the rockabilly banner that would have been better described as country or hillbilly. These, however, are the real deal: hopped-up, whiskey-fuelled songs of teenage rebellion, sung by untamed rockers who probably never expected their careers to last the week. Alongside acknowledged classics of the genre such as 'Put Your Cat Clothes On' by Carl Perkins, there are rare rockin' one-offs such as the frantic bass-slapping 'Don't Be Gone Long' by Bob Doss or the remarkable 'Wash Machine Boogie' by the Echo Valley Boys - the world's finest rockin' hymn to the romantic joys of household appliances. The CD covers the whole rockabilly spectrum, with tracks from prime rockin' labels such as Sun, Starday, Meteor and Columbia, plus tiny imprints such as Lilac. Tied-in with this release is the publication of a 300-page book, also called A Rocket In My Pocket - the Hipster's Guide To Rockabilly by Max Dιcharnι (Serpent's Tail), the first comprehensive history of the entire rockabilly genre to appear for twenty years. Max has compiled the Ace CD to complement the book, and has also written the sleevenotes. Reviews are expected in all major newspapers and magazines, in addition to radio interviews with the author. This is the first time on CD for some of these tracks, many of them favourites at rockin' clubs in the UK and around the world. The CD's title comes from Jimmy Lloyd's 1958 classic 'I Got A Rocket In My Pocket', included here alongside frantic movers such as 'The Raging Sea' by Gene Maltais or the gutbucket hill-country sounds Rocky Bill Ford's 'Mad Dog In Town'. There's also a track from the cat who started it all, Elvis Presley - whose 'Mystery Train' inspired a whole regiment of young musicians to find a cheap studio and get down and wail. He's on the cover of both our CD and the book, too. An ideal introduction for anyone new to genre, but with enough rare tracks to please the long-term, hardcore rockabilly fan. Track listing: 1. SHE'S THE ONE THAT'S GOT IT - Allen Page, 2. JELLO SAL - Benny Ingram, 3. DON'T BE GONE LONG - Bob Doss, 4. PUT YOUR CAT CLOTHES ON - Carl Perkins, 5. GET WITH IT - Charlie Feathers with Jody & Jerry, 6. HOW CAN YOU BE MEAN TO ME - Dale Vaughn, 7. SNAKE EYED MAMA - Don Cole, 8. WASH MACHINE BOOGIE - Echo Valley Boys (w Bill Browning), 9. MYSTERY TRAIN - Elvis Presley, 10. EVERYBODY'S TRYING TO BE BABY - Freddie Franks, 11. THE RAGING SEA - Gene Maltais, 12. JITTERBOP BABY - Hal Harris, 13. ROCKIN' IN THE GRAVEYARD - Jackie Morningstar, 14. I CAN'T FIND THE DOORKNOB - Jimmy & Johnny, 15. BIG GREEN CAR - Jimmy Carroll aka Billy Carroll, 16. I GOT A ROCKET IN MY POCKET - Jimmy Lloyd, 17. TRAIN KEPT A-ROLLIN' - Johnny Burnette & Rock'n'Roll Trio, 18. BOPPIN' HIGH SCHOOL BABY - Don Willis, 19. MAMA'S LITTLE BABY - Junior Thompson with the Meteors, 20. SAVE IT - Mel Robbins, 21. COME ON LITTLE MAMA - Ray Harris, 22. SCRATCHING ON MY SCREEN - Ric Cartey, 23. MAD DOG IN TOWN - Rocky Bill Ford, 24. BOP-A-LENA - Ronnie Self, 25. PINK AND BLACK - Sonny Fisher, 26. THE SLIDE - The Rhythm Rockers, 27. MEAN MEAN MAN - Wanda Jackson, 28. THE ACE STORY VOLUME 1 (The five original vinyl volumes of 'The Ace Story' were among the best (and best received) vinyl albums of this Ace's formative years. Given their significance - both historical and musical - we're delighted to announce that, over the next couple of years, we'll be welcoming them back into our catalogue at regular intervals. Johnny Vincent's Ace label was the jumping-off point for our own efforts to preserve rock'n'roll and R&B history. Johnny was among the first to license repertoire to us, more than 30 years ago, and it's a pleasure to bring a selection of his fabulous New Orleans-produced good-time music back home. Each volume will contain the original vinyl 'Ace Story' compilation, expanded to 24 tracks with the addition of tracks which complement those that were originally compiled by Ted Carroll, Roger Armstrong and the late Ray Topping. All of Ace Mississippi's big names feature across the five volumes, as will all of the company's most significant hits - remastered for the best sound that you will ever have heard them in. Track listing: 1. SEA CRUISE - Frankie Ford, 2. EVERYBODY'S CARRIED AWAY - Earl King, 3. HEY LITTLE GIRL - Frankie Lee Sims, 4. THE ACE STORY VOLUME 2 (DUE END OF SEPTEMBER) (Another uproarious helping of good time, mostly New Orleans-recorded R&B and rock'n'roll from the vaults of Ace Records of Jackson, Mississippi. The first dozen tracks were released by Ace almost 30 years ago as the vinyl volume 2 in this series. For the CD generation we've added a further dozen of the best sides from Johnny Vincent's Ace catalogue. Mastered mostly from fresh transfers of original US Ace master tapes and sounding better than ever, most of this material has been unavailable on CD for ten years and some tracks have never been on legit CD at all. Extensively annotated and with a generous smattering of label shots and contemporary ephemera, this happy hour of golden age rhythm and blues upholds the high standard of volume one and still leaves plenty more delights in store for the remaining three volumes, to be reissued during 2011. Track listing: 1. BLOW WIND BLOW - Junior Gordon, 2. BAD BOOGIE - Lightnin' Hopkins, 3. SILLY DILLY WOMAN - Mercy Baby, 4. ROBERTA - Frankie Ford, 5. I LOVE TO ROCK'N'ROLL - Eddie Bo, 6. THE LONDON AMERICAN LABEL - YEAR BY YEAR 1960 (The London-American label was the prime UK outlet for US hits in the 1950s and 1960s, introducing the British public to Bill Haley, Chuck Berry, the Drifters, Eddie Cochran, Bobby Darin, Little Richard, Roy Orbison, Pat Boone and countless others. For those who grew up on a musical diet of London-American releases - and also for those who simply enjoy great 20th century American music - Ace debuts the first of a series of at least 15 year-by-year overviews of the legendary black and silver (and, before that, black and gold) label - starting with one of its halcyon years, 1960. Tracks for the series have been carefully chosen to reflect the diversity of its output, and concentrating on recordings that do not appear on other Ace compilations. All tracks are presented in glorious mono - the way that you first heard and bought them on London at the time of their release. We are also, wherever possible, using the original London tapes for authenticity. Many countries apart from the UK had a London American label - for example Canada and Australia. Thus this series will have international 'legs' too. Most tracks were US or UK hits. The rest are such a familiar part of the DNA of American music that they feel as though they were anyway. Track listing: 1. LET IT ROCK - Chuck Berry, 2. THREE STEPS TO HEAVEN - Eddie Cochran, 3. WISHFUL THINKING - Wynn Stewart, 4. KOMMOTION - Duane Eddy, 5. BLUE ANGEL - Roy Orbison, 6. MYSTERY TRAIN - Vernon Taylor, 7. TINY TIM - LaVern Baker, 8. POETRY IN MOTION - Johnny Tillotson, 9. I LOVE THE WAY YOU LOVE - Marv Johnson, 10. ROAD RUNNER - Bo Diddley, 11. BEATNIK FLY - Johnny and the Hurricanes, 12. ALL I COULD DO WAS CRY - Etta James, 13. TOO YOUNG TO DATE - The Delicates, 14. DON'T BE CRUEL - Bill Black's Combo, 15. WAKE ME, SHAKE ME - The Coasters, 16. JUDY - Teddy Redell, 17. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME - The Drifters, 18. HEY LITTLE ONE - Dorsey Burnette, 19. LOVEY - The Clovers, 20. SOMEBODY TO LOVE - Bobby Darin, 21. I'VE BEEN LOVED BEFORE - Shirley & Lee, 22. DOLL HOUSE - Donnie Brooks, 23. PERFIDIA - The Ventures, 24. LIKE STRANGERS - The Everly Brothers, 25. MY GIRL JOSEPHINE - Fats Domino, 26. THE GIRL ON DEATH ROW - Lee Hazlewood with Duane Eddy and his orchestra, 27. SADIE'S BACK IN TOWN - Sonny Burgess, 28. THE LONDON AMERICAN LABEL - YEAR BY YEAR 1961 (The second volume in Ace's most talked about new series in some time carries us further into the 1960s with another fantastic selection of US and UK hits, flops and flips that all saw their first UK release on the famous silver and black logo of London-American. 1961's 28 tracks include 20 US Hot 100 hits, 14 of which also made the UK Top 50. Importantly - and for Ace's regular customers especially - only one of the 28 has ever been released on Ace CD previously. All of London's big hitmakers of the time are represented and all tracks are again presented in glorious mono - exactly as they were heard on the original 45s. Wherever possible, the original London tapes were transferred and digitised, to preserve maximum authenticity. More than 80% of the tracks you hear here are taken from those tapes. Given the critical acclaim that greeted our '1960' release we have no doubt that '1961' will receive a similar reception. 2010 will also see the release of 1962 and 1959's contributions to this series. THE LONDON AMERICAN LABEL - YEAR BY YEAR 1962 (Ace's highly acclaimed year-by year overview of the great American music that came out in the UK (and elsewhere) on the London label continues apace. The contents of the 1962 volume embrace teen, country, early soul, R&B, rock'n'roll, instrumentals and comedy and accurately sum up the label's entire output for that year (166 singles in total). Many of the era's biggest names are featured, and several of the biggest hits. The tracks also demonstrate how American music was adapting itself to the demise of rock'n'roll in the pre-Beatlemania years in diverse ways. Of the 28 tracks, only four have previously been released on Ace. Additionally, 18 of the tracks are presented directly from the same tapes that were used to manufacture the original London 45s. THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN ROCK 'N' ROLL - SPECIAL DOO-WOP EDITION VOLUME 2 (30 great black & white doo-wop groups from 1956 - 1963. Special Editions of The Golden Age of American Rock'n'Roll have to be special to justify their existence and sequels, such as this, are subjected to even greater analytical scrutiny in the preparation process than preceding volumes, thus avoiding the sense of dιjΰ vu that blights many a follow-up work. When one considers that doo wop was a largely American phenomenon and very much of its time, our Doo Wop Special Edition proved exceptionally popular. Volume 2 mines the same rich seam of vocal group splendour - only it digs deeper, to bring us many of the more obscure or lesser doo wop hits - but hits nonetheless - by groups lost to posterity, counterbalanced by some better-known names. Point is, they're all great records and, as the majority of the titles are being made available on a legitimate CD for the first time (with the benefit of high quality mastering), both collectors and the casual listener will find much to savour in this 30-track package. Compiled by Rob Finnis and Trevor Churchill. Attractive mega-booklet containing many rare illustrations and detailed notes by American doo wop authority Peter Grendysa. Track listing: 1. Arabia - The Delcos, 2. Paradise - THE TEMPTATIONS, 3. Lullaby Of The Bells - THE DELTAIRS, 4. You Baby You - THE CLEFTONES, 5. So Strange - THE JESTERS, 6. I Only Want You - THE PASSIONS, 7. Teenage Vows Of Love - THE DREAMERS, 8. Magic Moon (Clair De Lune) - THE RAYS , 9. Don't Forget I Love You - THE BUTANES, 10. Can I Come Over Tonight - THE VELOURS, 11. THE GOLDEN AGE OF AMERICAN ROCK 'N' ROLL - THE FOLLOW-UP HITS (The latest off-shoot in Ace's successful 'Golden Age Of American Rock'n'Roll' series presents 30 tracks with a common thread - all of them prevented their performers from becoming one hit wonders by following previous hits into the Billboard Hot 100. - The vast majority of these tracks still did very well indeed - better, in fact, than some of the hits that have featured in the main Golden Age series. - As always, the featured selections have been mastered from the finest sources, and one - the Corsairs' 'I'll Take You Home' - is being released in stereo for the first time. Several have been unavailable for decades, and many of them have never seen any sort of reissue at all. - The kind of copious sleeve notes and booklet illustrations that GA fans have come to expect are 'all present and correct', of course, and the musical content has been subjected to the same quality control that has made the Golden Age Of American Rock'n'Roll the backbone of the Ace catalogue for more than a decade now. Track listing: 1. Rock & Roll Is Here To Stay - DANNY & THE JUNIORS, 2. Betty Lou Got A New Pair Of Shoes - BOBBY FREEMAN, 3. (I Wanna) Dance With The Teacher - THE OLYMPICS, 4.
