BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: BAD PENNY BLUES - JOE MEEK THE EARLY YEARS

(2 CD set. Back in the 50s, before he successfully struck out on his own to establish himself as the UK's first wholly independent record producer, JOE MEEK had served a remarkable 'apprenticeship' during the course of which he engineered, co-produced and/or produced countless sessions for many of the UK's established record companies. Joe carved out a highly impressive reputation during this period, working on dozens of hit records - including five UK No.1s - and in addition to his many and various Pop, Skiffle and R&R sessions, he also worked on copious Jazz, Folk, Blues, Calypso and even light orchestral recordings. Many RGM aficionados regard this as the most interesting phase of his oft-controversial career - certainly, it was his most commercially-successful - and this unique compilation offers a comprehensive overview of those early years. Most areas of Meek's musical spectrum are covered (although, being honest, we drew the line at light orchestral!) and this is the first time that many of these artists have been compiled in a Joe Meek context. Astonishingly, perhaps, around a third of these sides are unavailable elsewhere on CD - making this set an absolute 'must-have' for any half-serious Joe Meek fan/collector.

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: 6.5 SPECIAL / OH BOY

(EARLY BRITISH TELEVISED ROCK 'N' ROLL - SIX--FIVE SPECIAL & JACK GOODS OH BOY. Towards the end of the 1950s when television and rock and roll were in their infancy the BBC launched what was to be it’s first attempt at a rock and roll programme. It was noisy. It was brash. It was chaotic. The high brow press hated it but the young people took it to their hearts. Six-Five Special was born! Almost a year later 'Oh Boy!' was launched on ITV by the same producer who created Six-Five Special, Jack Good. Unlike it’s predecessor it was an all out blast of streamlined rock and roll akin to a rocket launch!

This fantastic CD has a whopping 39 tracks that cover both the Six-Five Special and 'Oh Boy!' albums in their entirety! Featuring big names Don Lang, Jim Dale and an artist who went on to be one of the UK biggest rock n roll stars Cliff Richard.

If you are after some real corkers then check out Jim Dale's 'Party Time' and Don Lang’s 'Ramshackle Daddy' which rock by like an avalanche! Quite simply if you were around for these shows you will already know how good they were and if you missed them then now is your chance to grab hold of this sizzling hot rock platter and tear up the rug in your front room!

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: SAY WHEN - EMBER SIXTIES POP VOLUME 1 - 1960 - 1961

(In 1959, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway in that era. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. This CD series The Ember Sixties Pop series will collect the best of those records on to several volumes, starting with this compilation, which covers up to 1961.

Michael Cox had appeared on Jack Good’s television show 'Boy Meets Girl'. Jack introduced him to Joe Meek who produced ‘Angela Jones’. Initially released on Meek’s own Triumph label, and then on Ember. Grant Tracy & The Sunsets were signed up in early 1961. The Sunsets tried their luck first with ‘Cry Of The Wild Goose’, flipped by ‘Manhunt’, written by their guitarist, the young Pete 'Honeybus' Dello. Their debut vocal sides ‘Say When’ and ‘Please Baby Please’ were written by Pomus-Shuman. Grant sounds a little like Elvis on the follow-up, ‘Pretend’ backed with the King’s own ‘Love Me’. The songs on Ray Merrell‘s Ember release were written by Ray together with Don Black and Cyril Stapleton under various pseudonyms. ‘Why Did You Leave Me’ and ‘Teenage Love’ are infectious teen items with pizzicato strings and strong lead guitar. Roy Young was on another Jack Good television show 'Oh Boy!'. Roy recorded the storming ‘Four An’ Twenty Thousand Kisses’ before going to Hamburg to appear with The Beatles when they were still called The Beat Brothers. Cuddly Duddly was probably the best known black British singer in 1961 thanks to many TV appearances, also on 'Oh Boy!'. He is backed on the rocking ‘Sitting On A Train’ and ‘One That I Like’ by The Redcaps. The Larry Lawrence tracks have a strong Bill Black Combo influence, especially on the chugging ‘Jug-A-Roo’. Ray Ellington had the benefit of backing by Tony Crombie’s band, and everybody was swinging nicely on ‘Jump Over’ and ‘The Madison’. Julie, Hazel and Betty Dunderdale shortened their name to The Dale Sisters for their Ember debut, the bright and breezy ‘My Sunday Baby’. Pianist Tommy Sanderson was amongst the elite of London session players, frequently joined on dates by Bert Weedon on guitar and Ronnie Verrell on drums, who may have been The Sandmen on ‘Deadline’.

Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Michael Cox are valued at 45 pound and both the Grant Tracy & The Sunsets releases at 20 pounds). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with sought after tracks by Carter, Lewis & The Southerners and Mark Douglas amongst those included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to Beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots.

Track listing:
1. Michael Cox - Angela Jones, 2. Michael Cox - Don't Want To Know, 3. Grant Tracy & The Sunsets - Say When, 4. Grant Tracy & The Sunsets - Please Baby Please, 5. BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: TWO TIMING BABY - EMBER SIXTIES POP VOLUME 2

(In 1960 Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series will collate the best of those records. Two Timing Baby is the second instalment, picking up the story from where Say When: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 1 (FVCD044) left off.

Carter, Lewis & The Southerners’ first Ember single Two Timing Baby / Will It Happen To Me features Joe Meek engineering, Geoff Goddard on piano, Albert Lee on guitar, Chas Hodges on bass and Bobby Graham on drums. The Meek connection continues with Mark Douglas’ only single: Joe produced It Matters Not / Upside Down and Tornado Clem Cattini confirms he drums on both tracks.

American songwriters Buddy Kaye and Phil Springer penned many hits, including The Next Time for Cliff Richard. They brought several songs to Ember and Grant Tracy was the adaptable vocalist on The Great Matchmaker / The Tears Came Rolling Down and the follow-up flip Taming Tigers. Other beneficiaries of the prolific Kaye and Springer were Johnny Carson (Are You Anyone’s Girl / Teenage Bachelor and, again, The Tears Came Rolling Down) and Sandra Gale (Hello Heartache / If She’s Right For You) who had been girl singer with the Ray Ellington Quartet, joining Ember when Ellington did.

Kruger chose the songs for Lita Roza’s single with the aim of moving her sound towards pop and rock ‘n’ roll, and she turns in fine performances on Mama (He Treats Your Daughter Mean) / (He’s My) Dreamboat, aided by a driving band led by Tony Crombie. Brooklyn-born Kerry Adams recorded her single in New York, conducted by future soul giant Jerry Ragovoy. The Dale Sisters’ cute harmonies are evident on their second Ember single, Road To Love / Secrets. Tommy Sanderson’s second Ember 45 combined trad-jazz Ding Dong Rag with groovy Piano A Go Go, which would have made a great theme for a TV detective show.

Many of these original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Mark Douglas are valued at GBP75, Carter, Lewis & The Southerners at GBP50 and Lita Roza at GBP30). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to the end of the sixties, with further sought after tracks included. The series is complemented by compilations devoted to beat and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings are mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots.

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: HELLO MY ANGEL - EMBER SIXTIES POP VOLUME 3 - 1963 - 1964

(In 1960, Jeffrey Kruger launched Ember Records as an independent, one of very few in the UK, where the majors held sway. Straight away, the label set about trying to break into the charts with many fine pop releases. The Ember Sixties Pop series will collate the best of those records. Hello My Angel is the third instalment, picking up the story from where Two Timing Baby: Ember Sixties Pop Volume 2 (FVCD052) left off.

For his debut single Ray Singer was backed by the arranging and producing talents of ace session pianist Arthur Greenslade and drummer Bobby Graham. Ray wrote the lively Tell Me Now himself, while the bluesy flip I'm Comin' Home was provided by future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston. Norman Fowler from York acquired the stage name Steve Cassidy for his 1963 John Barry-produced Ember 45. Ecstasy was penned by the unusual combination of Marty Wilde and Mike Pratt, the latter a future star in the TV series Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased).

Count Downe & The Zeros were signed at the beginning of 1964 and cut their solitary single at Olympic. The plug side Hello My Angel is included here. Checking the original tapes for this compilation has turned up a tremendous trove of tracks that were unissued at the time. They will be of considerable interest to Sixties collectors.

Mark Wirtz masterminded Marcus Tro's only 45, writing, arranging and producing b-side What's The Matter Little Girl. Another strong Wirtz production is Sheila & Jenny's cover of When The Boy's Happy (a fine Jeff Barry-Ellie Greenwich number originally a US hit for The Four Pennies aka The Chiffons). Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde were Ember's most successful artists in the States. Lemon Tree had previously been a hit for Peter, Paul & Mary, while Early In The Morning was actually composed by Paul.

Russ Hamilton re-recorded 1957 hit We Will Make Love for Ember with a more Sixties sound from the Greenslade-Graham team at Olympic. Ray Ellington's fourth single for the company combined Lionel Bart's Rhythm Of The World with Roy Orbison's If You Can't Say Anything Nice. Lynn Holland's only Ember 45 featured energetic versions of the standards And The Angels Sing and I Can't Read Your Writing (For My Tears). Pete Dello of The Sunsets' melodic Little Kelly first appeared on their 1964 LP Teenbeat.

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: TELL ME - EMBER BEAT VOLUME 1

(In 1960 Ember joined the small number of indies trying to compete in a market dominated by the four major record companies. That it survived until 1979 is testament to the acumen of founder Jeffrey Kruger, who had made waves in the fifties music scene with his London jazz club, The Flamingo, and his interests in publishing. Hit records proved hard to come by, but by spotting opportunities ahead of the pack and catering for specialist audiences, Kruger was able to run a flourishing record label.

By 1962 the first evidence of what became known as beat music was emerging, most famously with The Beatles’ “Love Me Do”, charting that October. A couple of the acts featured on this, the first of three compilations devoted to Ember beat 1962-1967, were no strangers to the label. In an arrangement similar to that enjoyed by The Shadows with Cliff Richard, The Sunsets (who included guitarist Pete Dello, later of Honeybus of “I Can’t Let Maggie Go” fame) had released instrumental records in their own right and also backed vocalist Grant Tracy. Their two muscular contributions to Ember Beat Vol. 1 first surfaced on the label in 1963, but are redolent of the pre-Beatles rock’n’roll instrumental group scene.

Carter, Lewis and The Southerners had one Ember single under their belt before issuing “Tell Me” in 1962. Engineered by the legendary Joe Meek and written by his regular collaborator Geoffrey Goddard, “Tell Me” was backed with a Carter/Lewis original. Individually and collectively, Carter and Lewis were to go on to considerable success, ultimately dropping their performing roles and concentrating on songwriting and management.

With the advent of producer/composer/arranger John Barry, Ember definitely moved up a gear. Barry came to Ember with an impressive CV: in-house arranger for EMI, leader of hit instrumental combo The John Barry Seven, and composer, arranger and conductor on the first UK soundtrack album (to the Adam Faith vehicle Beat Girl). Ember released several Barry soundtracks, including Zulu, which had one side of soundtrack recordings, and a second side which we have plundered for classy beat instrumentals by the stellar John Barry Seven. Barry also introduced pop duo Chad and Jeremy to Ember. The pair had just one domestic hit with debut Yesterday’s Gone, but were massive in the US as part of the British Invasion. Initially produced by Barry, and then by Shel Talmy and ultimately Jimmy Haskell, the duo recorded diverse repertoire, ranging from folk to show tunes. For the Ember Beat series we concentrate on their beat-ier, pop material.

Kruger leased several of Chad and Jeremy’s singles to United Artists. Likewise the John Barry-produced group A Band Of Angels was signed to UA, for a pair of singles, which were the earliest commercial recordings of Mike D’Abo, who later succeeded Paul Jones as singer with Manfred Mann, as well as penning Handbags And Gladrags and many other hits. Marcus Tro’s solitary A-side was a cover version of early Jagger/Richard composition Tell Me, produced by emerging talent Mark Wirtz. The Washington DC’s released one single on Ember. Further material by the group surfaced on an album released to gain more mileage from a pre-fame Dave Clark Five single (the rights to which, alas, have subsequently reverted to Dave Clark). We also round up a B-side by Brighton group Count Downe and The Zeros, and both sides of a single by singer/guitarist Ray Singer (later, briefly a member of psych-pop group Nirvana).

This is the first coherent survey of Ember’s releases from the beat era. Many of the original singles are highly collectable (mint copies of Carter, Lewis and Count Downe going for 50 GBP and 35 GBP respectively). Subsequent volumes will carry the story through to 1967, with collectables by The Couriers, The Brothers Grimm, The Clockwork Oranges and The Fadin’ Colours. The series will be complemented by compilations devoted to pre- and post-Beat pop and rock from the Ember vaults. Recordings will be mastered from tape, where available, and booklets illustrated with sleeve and label shots.

Track listing:
Savoy Club Stomp (The Sunsets), Tell Me (Carter, Lewis & The Southerners), My Broken Heart (Carter, Lewis & The Southerners), Mountain King (The Sunsets), Yesterday's Gone (Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde), Zulu Stamp (The John Barry Seven), Monkey Feathers (The John Barry Seven), Like I Love You Today (Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde), Don't Shed A Tear (Count Downe & The Zeros), Kisses Sweeter Than Wine (The Washington DC's), Where Did You Go? (The Washington DC's), High Grass (The John Barry Seven), Big Shield (The John Barry Seven), Me (A Band Of Angels), Not True As Yet (A Band Of Angels), A Summer Song (Chad Stuart & Jeremy Clyde), It's Gotta Be (Ray Singer), Hey, Who? BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: DONE ME WRONG - EMBER BEAT VOLUME 2

(Done Me Wrong is the second installment of a three-volume series devoted to mining the Ember archives for choice beat recordings from the years 1962 to 1967, picking up the story from where Tell Me: Ember Beat Vol. 1 (FVCD014) left off. A third volume of Ember Beat will carry the story through to 1967, serving up collectables by The Clockwork Oranges and The Fadin’ Colours, as well as more Belfast beat, and soulful sounds courtesy of Bobby Johnson & The Atoms. The series will be complemented by further compilations, to provide a comprehensive survey of Ember’s contribution to pop, rock, soul and British modern jazz in the sixties and seventies.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: The Couriers were a London band, who toured South Africa and wound up starring in the musical comedy film Africa Shakes. Between 1963 and 1964 they recorded two albums for South African label Renown. The A-side of their one Ember single was a cover of 'Take Away', which had been the flipside of The Tams’ hit, 'Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me'. For the B-side the group chose an original, 'Done Me Wrong', a popular item among collectors of the British R&B/freakbeat scene, who will pay up to 30 pounds for the single, or 100 pounds if the scarce picture sleeve is intact. Chad and Jeremy scored just one British hit with their John Barry-produced debut single 'Yesterday’s Gone', but were immensely successful in the States, eventually relocating to California and signing to Columbia. Done Me Wrong cherry-picks two tracks from their first Ember LP, including the Lennon/McCartney composition 'From A Window', plus the single 'What Do You Want With Me?', and two tracks from the duo’s second Ember album. From their 1965 Ember album Dave Clark Five And The Washington DC's, 'Little One' appears along with two unreleased recordings, which may have been intended for a single. There is also a previously unissued recording by Warwick-based The Midnights, plus both sides of their only Ember single. Grant Tracy was no stranger to Ember, having released four singles between 1961 and 1962. In 1965 he re-signed to the label for the Mark Wirtz-produced 'Tell Her I Lied' c/w 'Never Let It Be Said', bringing the singer’s relationship with Ember to a close. Mel & The Brothers Grimm released one single on Decca before signing to Ember as simply The Brothers Grimm for their second and last single 'A Man Needs Love', penned by George Fischoff and Tony Powers, the writers of '98.6' and 'Lazy Day' (hits for Keith and Spanky & Our Gang respectively). (Flipside 'Looky Looky' can be heard on Ember soul compilation Good To The Last Drop, FVCD019.) In 1965 Ember released Liverpool Today 'Live At The Cavern'. The whole album has been reissued by Fantastic Voyage (FVCD015) but here you can sample local heroes Earl Preston's Realms performing 'Daddy Rolling Stone'. The rest of the tracks assembled here were originally issued on the Ember album Ireland's Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups From Belfast’s Maritime Club, which was released in1966 and presumably intended to exploit the success of Them featuring Van Morrison, who had emerged from this scene back in 1964. There is a track apiece from The Alleykatz, The Bats, Luvin' Kind, Just Five and The People (who evolved into rock group Eire Apparent and recorded an album with Jimi Hendrix.)

Track listing:
1 The Couriers: Done Me Wrong, 2 The Couriers: Take Away, 3 Chad & Jeremy: The Truth Often Hurts The Heart, 4 Chad & Jeremy: From A Window, 5 The Washington DC's: Little One, 6 The Midnights: Since I Lost You, 7 Grant Tracy: Tell Her I Lied, 8 Grant Tracy: Never Let It Be Said, 9 Chad & Jeremy: What Do You Want With Me?, 10 The Midnights: Show Me Around, 11 The Midnights: Only Two Can Play, 12 The Washington DC's: Have You Seen My Baby?, 13 The Washington DC's: Return To Me, 14 The Brothers Grimm: A Man Needs Love, 15 Earl Preston's Realms: Daddy Rolling Stone, 16 Chad & Jeremy: No Other Baby, 17 Chad & Jeremy: My How The Time Goes By, 18 The Alleykatz: The Friendly Undertaker, 19 The Bats: On The Waterfront, 20 Just Five: Well Don't That Beat Them All, 21 The People: Well… All Right, 22 Luvin' Kind: It's A Cruel World, Alternative Versions, 23 The Couriers: Done Me Wrong (backing track), 24 The Couriers: Take Away (backing track)

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: AFTER TONIGHT - EMBER BEAT VOLUME 3

(Following hot on the heels of Tell Me (FVCD014) and Done Me Wrong (FVCD023), After Tonight concludes our survey of indie label Ember’s contribution to the beat scene. We have reached the years 1966 and 1967, when the beat scene was giving way to the nascent rock sound and psychedelia on the one hand, and teen-orientated pop on the other. Cover versions of both A Whiter Shade Of Pale (by Bobby Johnson & The Atoms) and The Theme From 'The Monkees' (by The Peenuts) illustrate this divergence of markets. After Tonight serves up a track apiece by The Alleykatz, The Bats, Luvin' Kind, Just Five and The People (who evolved into rock group Eire Apparent and recorded an album with Jimi Hendrix), concluding our reissue of tracks from the 1966 album Ireland's Greatest Sounds: Five Top Groups From Belfast’s Maritime Club. Elsewhere, styles range from the garage surf of The Clockwork Oranges to the club-friendly home-grown R&B sound of Bobby Johnson & The Atoms (whose contributions include a cover of the Otis Redding/Carla Thomas hit Tramp). Both singles by The Fadin' Colours are included. The first is a cover of (Just Like) Romeo And Juliet, a US hit for The Reflections, while the second, the superior Be With Me, may never have got beyond acetate stage. Vocalist Ray Singer, later briefly a member of UK pop-psych band Nirvana, is represented by both sides of a single and a brace of album cuts. Paul's Troubles only released one single on Ember, but we have also included two further tracks from a French EP. The series will be complemented by further compilations, to provide a comprehensive survey of Ember’s contribution to pop, rock, soul and British modern jazz in the sixties and seventies.

Track listing:
01 The Clockwork Oranges: Ready, Steady, 02 The Clockwork Oranges: After Tonight, 03 Ray Singer: Look In Your Eyes, 04 Ray Singer: Ah Oop, 05 The Alleykatz: Chicago Calling, 06 The Bats: People Like You, 07 Just Five: I Will Have You, 08 The People: I'm With You, 09 Luvin' Kind: Answers Please, 10 The Fadin' Colours: (Just Like) Romeo And Juliet, 11 The Fadin' Colours: Billy Christian, 12 Ray Singer: What's Done Has Been Done, 13 Ray Singer: Won't It Be Fine, 14 Paul's Troubles: You'll Find Out, 15 Paul's Troubles: You've Got Something, 16 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: A Whiter Shade Of Pale, 17 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: Another Man, 18 The Fadin' Colours: Be With Me, 19 The Fadin' Colours: You're No Use, 20 Paul's Troubles: The Devil Jumps Up, 21 Paul's Troubles: That's My Kind Of Love, 22 The Peenuts: The Theme From The Monkees, 23 Ray Singer: A Dreamer Of The Past, 24 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: Do It Again A Little Bit Slower, 25 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: Tramp. Alternative Versions: 26 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: Do It Again A Little Bit Slower (backing track), 27 Bobby Johnson & The Atoms: Tramp (backing track)

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: THE BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL ANTHOLOGY 1956 - 1964

(5 x CD set, 93 original recordings. This 5 CD set contains some of the best pioneering Beat Boom recordings, including British takes on US R&B hits like ‘Some Other Guy’ by the Big Three, ‘Just Little Bit’ by The Undertakers and Rufus Thomas’ recording ‘Walking The Dog’ by Merseyside group The Dennisons. You can add to those Bern Elliott & The Fenmen’s interpretation of the Motown favourite ‘Money’ and Dave Berry & The Cruisers’ unique take on the early Elvis favourite ‘ My Baby Left Me’. Also highlighted are outstanding original songs like ’ That’s What I Want’ by The Marauders and ’Everything’s Alight’ from Liverpool’s Mojos.

One of the most interesting features of this collection has to be the inclusion of many of the first or very early releases by some of the biggest acts of the later years. Numbered among these are The Animals, Tom Jones, Georgie Fame and The Who, whose first release ‘I’m The Face’ (issued as by The High Numbers) is highlighted. There are also early records by Wayne Fontana & the Mindbenders, Steve ‘Small Faces’ Marriott, Joe Cocker, Spencer Davis, Lulu (with what else but ‘Shout’), the inimitable Rod Stewart and of course The Beatles, who are featured with their 1961 revival of the 1920s song ‘Ain’t She Sweet’.

Between 1956 and 1964, the years that this set spans, there were many big changes in the music world. For example, the breakable 10” 78rpm records which accounted for almost all UK single sales in 1956, had by 1964 become museum pieces, and been replaced by the 7'' unbreakable 45rpm singles. The music itself too had, of course, altered significantly in the period when teens went from Teddy Boys to Mods, and British rock’n’roll artists went from fans to followers to leaders. This anthology includes most of the varied faces of UK rock’n’roll in that era including a few somewhat dated or carefully cloned covers, novelty numbers, skiffle songs, praiseworthy interpretations of US hits, outstanding original rock songs, instrumentals, teen beat/pop rock, early British R&B and Merseybeat. It does in fact include almost every musical area of note in British rock music’s rise, and goes literally from big bands to The Beatles.

BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL, SKIFFLE AND EARLY 60s U.K TEENERS: BRITISH ROCK 'N' ROLL AT DECCA VOLUME 3

(This release represents the latest instalment in Vocalion’s survey of vintage British rock ‘n’ roll from the Decca archives. The third volume spans the years 1957-1963 and contains many rare and sought-after Decca singles by some cult names. Particularly notable among these are Screaming Lord Sutch, who performs Monster in Black Tights and Don’t You Just Know It among others. In the UK the Screaming Lord later became a politician (of sorts) and kept British voters smiling by fronting The Monster Raving Looney Party! Guitarist/composer Rhet Stoller, who appeared on Volume 2 in this series (CDLK 4364), is featured with Chariot, one side of his sought-after 1960 Decca single. The Most Brothers - one of whom later became legendary pop producer Mickie Most - contribute with I’m Comin’ Home, Dottie and Don’t Go Home. Terry White & The Terriers are represented with Rock Around the Mailbag, their Joe Meek-produced 1959 single and the flipside to Blackout that featured on Volume 2. There is much more besides on this superb compilation, which provides yet another fascinating glimpse into the ’50s/’60s UK pop scene and proves the Brits could rock with the best of ’em.
