The twentieth instalment of Bear Family's hugely acclaimed rockabilly anthology series, 'That'll Flat Git It', features perhaps our most unknown label, Event Records. Most rockabilly came from the South, but Event Records was founded by Al Hawkes 1956 in Maine, and many of the artists came from the chilly northeast where the United States borders the Canadian maritimes. The great underground hero on Event was Curtis Johnson, who was actually from the South but was appearing up in Maine with a local country group. Collectors have forked over hundreds of dollars of Johnson's singles through the years, and those records have withstood time spectacularly well. Johnson, though, remained an underground legend while another Event discovery, Dick Curless, became a bigtime country star on Tower and Capitol Records during the 1960s (his Tombstone Every Mile is still hailed as a truck driving classic). In the 1950s, though, Curless adapted his raw baritone to rockabilly, and the result (Evil Hearted Man Blues) is surprisingly good. Also noteworthy is Donnie & Audrey Harrisons's Rockabilly Boogie which - like many of the Johnson singles - features the incredible fingerstyle guitar of future jazz legend, Lenny Breau. The others on the collection can only be described as 'Great Unknowns.'Ricky Coyne, Scotty McKay, The Javalins, Slim Martin, Johnny Houston, etc. were mostly northern country singers who changed their tune and made some of the most underrated and spectacular rockabilly ever recorded. Every single truly was an event, and these 37 tracks are an another incredible compilation to an incredible series. As with all the other volumes, there is full annotation, copious photos, and stellar sound quality.
