UK Labels: GIRLS GONE ROCKIN' (3 CD set. If one were to go by the charts alone, it would be easy to conclude that red-blooded Rock'n'Roll, and its kissin' cousins R'n'B and Rockabilly, was solely a male preserve. And to a degree that was the case but as this superb collection reveals, when it comes to cuttin' a rug or settin' the woods on fire, the girls can easily give the boys a run for their money. Indeed, more than fifty years on, many first generation rockin' gals continue to inspire contemporary artists such as Imelda May and VV Brown, whilst others - like Etta James and Wanda Jackson - endure under their own steam, winning accolades well into their seventies when most ladies have long since hung up their sequinned mules. Some used Rock'n'Roll as a springboard for recording careers which were to blossom across the decades and branch in new directions, whilst others' quickly faded into obscurity like last night's prom corsage. Many were trail blazers, standing up for themselves against an ever-present backdrop of chauvinism and bigotry. A few broke the mould by penning their own material or by refusing to play second fiddle to their male counterparts. More often than not, digging in their cha cha heels didn't win them any fans with industry bigwigs but no matter, as these discs prove their true worth was in being able to lay down the Big Beat with aplomb. Drawing together some of the finest female singers from across the Roll'n'Roll spectrum, this 75-track set sees chart-topping R&B mamas rubbing shoulders with boogie woogie country gals, and demure Pop princesses mingling with Rockabilly fillies whose lesser-heard down-home ditties have nonetheless earned them a place in collectors' hearts. From sassy city slickers such as Annisteen Allen and LaVern Baker, to Southern songbirds like Sun Records' Miller Sisters and the then-fledgling artist/writer Jackie De Shannon, this is as diverse and compelling a set of distaff rockers as one could hope to find. UK Labels: ROUTES OF ROCKABILLY (Whilst it’s undeniable that Rockabilly’s spiritual home lay in the South, it’s perhaps a little simplistic to suggest it was born merely of the fusion of the white Country music and black R&B that predominated there. Other influences, both musical and geographical, helped to shape the sound that would eventually give rise to Rock’n’Roll. From the backwoods of Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia to the dusty plains of Oklahoma and Texas, from the swamplands of Louisiana to the bustling juke joints of Illinois and Michigan, traditional Bluegrass, Hillbilly, Western Swing, Gospel, Blues and Cajun would all play their part in creating a rich musical melting pot as diverse as the country and its people. This compilation attempts to highlight some of those influences and includes many of the original versions of songs later adapted by barnstorming rockers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Wanda Jackson. Early recordings by Country legends such as Hank Williams, Jimmy Revard, Bob Wills and the Delmore Brothers, and by Blues exponents Arthur Gunter, Big Mama Thornton and Piano Red, indicate that the roots and branches of Rockabilly grew in many directions and stretch back further than one might think. UK Labels: GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT - RED HOT ROCKABILLY (3 CD set, 75 all time great rockers. ''They called it Rockabilly long before they called it Rock’n’Roll...'' so sings the undisputed Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson on her 2006 album Remember Elvis. And whilst the Hillbilly Cat was undeniably the genre’s most famous protagonist, the exciting fusion of white Country music and black Rhythm & Blues that erupted across the US in the mid-50s made household names of many, and produced a wealth of recordings rarely equalled for unbridled energy and wild rebellion. The Rockabilly revival which took hold in the 1970s found a new audience for this music which endures to this day, making stars of the more obscure exponents twenty years after the event. Raw, rough and ready, Rockabilly paved the way for Pop music as we know it. If the South was the birthplace of Rockabilly, then Sun Records in Memphis was its cradle. In the wake of Elvis Presley, hopefuls flocked to the tiny independent from all over the southern US and beyond, keen to replicate his success. With groundbreaking producer Sam Phillips at the controls, Sun was undoubtedly the epicentre of this new music and helped launch the careers of Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison, to name but three. However, following Elvis’ breakthrough and subsequent move to RCA for an unprecedented $35,000, other indies and major labels alike were determined to get in on the act. At a time when music was not only divided along racial lines but also by age and local tastes, in some eyes Rockabilly represented pure menace, the anthem of denim-clad juvenile delinquents. When it did manage to break out of its regional confines, it threatened to undermine the nation’s youth with its lascivious lyrics and dangerous rhythms, driven by a chunking, percussive bass and pared down, primitive sound. Even so, there was no shortage of eager beavers willing to commit to wax, often with varying degrees of commercial success. Jockeying for position alongside the newcomers were the old hands, established artists sensing a career boost as ''moon, June, spoon'' lyrics and corny Country twang began to pall. From across the gamut, this carefully compiled set offers a sizzling selection of some of the finest Rockabilly recordings from the period 1954-58. Alongside the household names sit the more obscure, and whilst their stars may not have burned for long, they burned no less brightly thanks to records that are now regarded as classics. Including genre-defining cuts from the likes of proto-punks the Johnny Burnette Trio, Janis Martin ‘The Female Elvis’, Billy Riley, Charlie Feathers, Ronnie Self, and Bob Luman, as well as lesser-heard gems, this is Rockabilly at its red hot rockin’est best.
