RAY CAMPI THE MEMORY LINGERS ON - REMEBERING JESSE JAMES AND ALL THE BOYS (17 new recordings in tribute to Texas Western Swing legend Jesse James, incs..Rag Mop, Jesse Polka, Billy's Tune, Flying Saucer Mama, Hog Calling Champ Of Arkansas, Swinging On The Steel, Piano Pete's Boogie For all lovers of Texas music, this is a rare treat! It's an affectionate tribute from one great underappreciated artist to another. In the 1940s, Ray Campi moved from New York to Austin, Texas, and grew up with an enduring love of Texas beerjoint music. Chief among his heroes was Jesse James, a transplanted Mississippian who led a western swing dance band. In a time when music was far more regionalized than it is now, Jesse James was a local legend, playing to packed houses wherever he went. Today, he mostly survives in memory. He made a few recordings for Blue Bonnet and 4-Star, but none of those capture the excitement of his live shows...an excitement that Ray Campi does his best to re-create here. Songs like Flying Saucer Mama and Ray Mop capture the western dance band craze at its zenith. 'As I write these reminiscences,' says Ray Campi in his text, 'I can picture in my mind's eye the gold 1947 Desoto limousine, its rack on the top brimming with instrument cases, with Junior driving, heading south on Congress Avenue around 5.00 p.m., delivering Jesse and the Boys to music-craving outposts like Bandera, La Grange, Bastrop, Dimebox, San Marcos, and Houston, Texas for another night of picking, dancing, and fun for all. It's a thrill to be able to relive the songs I heard so beautifully played by good fellows who befriended this star-struck kid long ago.' Let Ray Campi take you back to a place and time where few of us have been: a by-God Texas beerjoint, circa 1949. Track listing: Jesse Polka When Jole Blon And Kilroy Got Married Blue Bonnet Polka What Can I Do To Get You Back New Goodnight Waltz Piano Pete's Boogie Will Tomorrow Bring Me You Swinging On The Steel Rag Mop Darlin' I Don't Understand The Hot Canary I've Got The Craziest Feeling Merry Widow Waltz Billy's Tune Flying Saucer Mama Hog Calling Champ Of Arkansas Palomino Polka) BEAR FAMILY Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

GONNA SHAKE THIS SHACK TONIGHT! Following overwhelming success of our THAT'LL FLAT GIT IT series and ROCKS! Series Bear Family turn attention to the overlooked, unloved, and generally neglected country boogie. It's a myth that country boys didn't get hip to the jive until Elvis came along. From the mid-1940s onward, country musicians were really shaking the shack, and that's where we'll be taking you: Tennessee Saturday Nights! If you've ever wondered where JERRY LEE LEWIS, ELVIS, CARL PERKINS, JOHNNY BURNETTE, and other first generation rockabilly stars got half their style and half their cool, look no further than THE CARLISLES, LITTLE JIMMY DICKENS, and others who'll be coming very soon to Bear Family's exciting new series! As always with Bear Family, the music is just the beginning. There's the story of the musicians, the story of the music, and incredible never-before-seen photographs. When Bill Carlisle died in 2003 aged 94, it ended a country music dynasty that began when his brother, Cliff, began mixing blues and country on record as far back as 1930. Younger brother Bill got into the act in 1933, and by the dawn of the 1950s Bill was one of the hottest draws on the country circuit. We pick up the story in 1951 when Bill's group, the Carlisles, signed with Mercury Records. Bill had just acquired a young guitarist named Chet Atkins, and Chet is heard laying down his hot licks throughout this set. He was a much wilder player on these sessions than on his solo recordings for RCA in the 1960s, and really laid the foundation for rockabilly guitar. Martha Carson is featured, too, and her gospel exuberance would later influence Elvis and many others. Bill's hits, like Too Old To Cut The Mustard, Iz Zat You Myrtle and No Help Wanted, were wildly energetic, but this set also includes songs like Leave That Liar Alone (that Ray Charles adapted into Leave My Woman Alone), and the Carlisles' cover version of the Drifters' Honey Love, as well as the best of the Carlisles' never-before-reissued RCA and Columbia recordings. Bill Carlisle's warped sensibility and infectious good humor have survived fifty years VERY well. This is the only Carlisles' CD on the market, and the only one you'll ever need! Tracks: Busy Body Boogie Rattlesnake Daddy Love, Love, Love (That's What It Is) No Help Wanted Something Different Knot Hole T'ain't Nice Too Old To Cut The Mustard Is Zat You Myrtle? JENKS TEX CARMEN THE OLD GUITAR AND ME (31 original hillbilly hula trax with lots of Hawaiian steele guitar, all recordings from 'SAGE & SAND' label, incs..Hillbilly Hula, Casey Jones, You'll Come A Crawlin' Back, Krisha Boom Ba, Honk Honk Honk, Silver Rails Leading Westward, Fire In The Teepee, Lobo On The Border. Jenks 'Tex' Carman was a true American original. His unique style of hillbilly hula music would never have made a dent in Nashville, but on the west coast he was embraced. Playing a bizarre style of Hawaiian steel guitar, with little sense of timing, tuning, meter or rhythm, Jenks 'Tex' Carman was on a musical island all of his own. Jenks 'Tex' Carman brought such diverse influences as Hawaiian steel guitar, vaudeville, cowboy ballads, the 'punk' attitude of rockabilly and acoustic country blues together in an act that was as novel as it was perverse. Jenks Tex Carman. Who and what was he? A half century ago he was making country records unlike anybody else's. No amount of smoothing could remove his kind of rough edges. Was he the 'first punk country artist?' Did Carman really have an alternative musical vision in his head or was he simply a borderline psychotic, blazing his own trail and giving voice to the odd collection of sounds in his head? Here was a man you couldn't display during prime time. At least not in 1955. A half a century later, audiences are a lot more open to hybrid music and category bending. Tex Carman might have been right at home as opening act for a 21st century psychobilly band. Too bad he was born 50 years too soon. Hank Davis. Goldmine magazine. JENKS TEX CARMAN HILLBILLY HULA (20 x early 1950s West Coast hillbillies. let's hear it for a true nutter. Acoustic slide guitarist Tex Carman couldn't play in tune to save his life, and he sang occasionally in a mixture of English and gibberish that he probably thought was Polynesian. Everything's redeemed by his irrepressible energy and unabashed looniness, though. Here are all his '51- '53 Capitol sides, including Hillbilly Hula, Hi-Lo March, Samoa Stomp, Locust Hill Rag, Dixie Cannonball and 15 others. Fans of the slide guitar and steel guitar need this.
