MERLE HAGGARD UNTAMED HAWK (5 x cd box-set plus 52 page book....In 1962 Merle Haggard cut his first session for Tally Records and set about defining his personal vision of country music. It was radically opposed to what was coming out of Nashville then, but it laid the foundation for half of what comes out of Nashville now. Here are Merle's complete recordings for Tally and Capitol from 1962 to 1968 (except the Jimmie Rodgers tribute available separately). The classic early hits are here, like Strangers, Swinging Doors, The Bottle Let Me Down, I Threw Away The Rose, Branded Man, Sing Me Back Home, Lonesome Fugitive, and Mama Tried, but the importance of this set is that it shows Merle's developing artistry in the album tracks, abandoned cuts, and rare singles. Other sets skim the surface; this one tells the complete story. CD-1: Sing A Sad Song ~ You Don't Even Try ~ Life In Prison (false start) ~ Life In Prison ~ You Don't Have Far To Go ~ Sam Hill ~ Sam Hill ~ Please Mr. DJ ~ I'd Trade All Of My Tomorrows ~ (My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers ~ Slowly But Surely (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Just Between The Two Of Us (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Falling For You ~ I Wanta Live Again ~ A House Without Love Is Not A Home ~ Walking The Floor Over You ~ The Worst Is Yet To Come ~ Piedras Negras (Go Home) ~ Singin' My Heart Out ~ Skid Row ~ Falling For You (without string overdub) ~ I'd Trade All Of My Tomorrows (w/o string od) ~ If I Had Left It Up To You ~ I'm Gonna Break Every Heart I Can ~ Stranger In My Arms (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ If I Could Be Him ~ Shade Tree (Fix-It-Man) ~ This Town's Not Big Enough ~ CD-2: I'll Take A Chance (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Our Hearts Are Holding Hands (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Too Used To Being With You (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ That Makes Two Of Us (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Forever And Ever (& BONNIE OWENS) ~ Wait A Little Longer Please Jesus (& B.OWENS) ~ Swinging Doors ~ Swinging Doors (alt.) ~ The Girl Turned Ripe ~ I Threw Away The Rose ~ The Fugitive ~ Loneliness Is Eating Me Alive ~ Someone Told My Story ~ I Threw Away The Rose ~ Hang Up My Gloves ~ The Longer You Wait ~ The Bottle Let Me Down ~ I Can't Stand Me ~ Someone Else You've Known ~ High On A Hilltop ~ I'll Look Over You ~ No More You And Me ~ Mixed Up Mess Of A Heart ~ I'm A Lonesome Fugitive ~ Life In Prison ~ House Of Memories ~ All Of Me Belongs To You ~ CD-3: Mary's Mine ~ If You Want To Be My Woman ~ Someone Told My Story ~ Piedras Negras (Go Home) ~ Whatever Happened To Me ~ Loneliness Is Eating Me Alive ~ Skid Row ~ Drink Up And Be Somebody ~ Gone Crazy ~ I Threw Away The Rose ~ Some Of Us Never Learn ~ Branded Man ~ You Don't Have Very Far To Go ~ Wine Take Me Away ~ If You See My Baby ~ Somewhere Between ~ Don't Get Married ~ My Hands Are Tied ~ I Made The Prison Band ~ Look Over Me ~ Long Black Limousine ~ I'll Leave The Bottle On The Bar ~ Sing Me Back Home ~ The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp ~ Seeing Eye Dog ~ Will You Visit Me On Sundays ~ Home Is Where A Kid Grows Up ~ CD-4: Where Does The Good Times Go ~ Good Times ~ News Break ~ My Past Is Present ~ Mom And Dad's Waltz ~ My Ramona ~ Because You Can't Be Mine ~ The Train Never Stops ~ You Still Have A Place In My Heart ~ Money Tree ~ A Picture From Two Sides Of Life ~ The Legend Of Bonnie And Clyde ~ I Started Loving You Again ~ Love Has A Mind Of Its Own ~ Fool's Castle ~ Is This The Beginning Of The End? ~ The Sunny Side Of My Life ~ Run `Em Off ~ I'll Always Know ~ You'll Never Love Me Now ~ Mama Tried ~ In The Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad) ~ Little Old Wine Drinker Me ~ Teach Me To Forget ~ Lookin' For My Mind (takes 1-2) ~ Lookin' For My Mind (takes 3-5) ~ Lookin' For My Mind (take 6) ~ CD-5: Green Green Grass Of Home ~ I Could Have Gone Right ~ The Day The Rains Came ~ I Think We're Livin' In The Good Old Days ~ Somewhere On Skid Row ~ Who Do I Know In Dallas ~ Folsom Prison Blues ~ Too Many Bridges To Cross Over ~ You're Not Home Yet ~ I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am ~ I Just Want To Look At You One More Time ~ I'm Bringin' Home Good News ~ Keep Me From Cryin' Today ~ I Can't Hold Myself In Line ~ I'm Free ~ It Meant Goodbye To Me When You Said Hello... ~ Who'll Buy The Wine ~ She Thinks I Still Care ~ What's Wrong With Stayin' Home ~ When No Flowers Grow ~ Every Fool Has A Rainbow ~ Hungry Eyes ~ Silver Wings) BEAR FAMILY Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

MERLE HAGGARD HAG - THE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1968 - 1976 (6 x CD box-set plus large hard back book, 165 tracks on this set which is a follow-up to the 'Untamed Hawk' set. Also has 20 unreleased performances -• A true legend of American music captured in his prime! • The follow-up to Bear Family's hugely acclaimed 'Untamed Hawk' set. • All the studio recordings between 1969 and 1976, including 15 straight #1 country hits. • Includes Vietnam era classics like Okie From Muskogee and The Fightin' Side Of Me, as well as the more moderate unreleased song Somewhere In Between. • More than 20 other unreleased performances! Merle Haggard occupies a unique place in American music. The man who gave voice to the Silent Majority went on to become a counter-culture favourite. He has scored hits in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, and still works 200 sold-out road dates a year. Ever since Bear Family released 'Untamed Hawk' in 1995, we've been asked for a follow-up comprising the rest of his legendary Capitol recordings. This is it...on 6 CDs, and it covers the tumultuous years between 1968 and 1976. The only exclusions are his Jimmie Rodgers tribute (already issued on a single CD by Bear Family) and the live recordings, which will be released in a companion volume. These were the years when Merle Haggard polarized the USA with songs like Okie From Muskogee and The Fightin' Side Of Me, yet, as this set reveals, his approach to politics was more nuanced than many thought at the time. In an unreleased song (one of many) titled Somewhere In Between he says 'I stand looking at the left wing, and I turn towards the right, and my eyes find both good and bad there on either scene ....' He adds, I'm not too old to understand the young who disagree.' The unissued recordings also include his original version of That's The Way Love Goes, which became a big hit for him on Epic Records several years later. These were Merle Haggard's golden years when he gave voice to the voiceless, and scored an unbroken string of #1 hits. This is American country music... make that American music... at its finest. BEAR FAMILY ROCKS SERIES: ROY HALL ROCKS (27 great original 50s rockers recorded for various labels...56 page booklet.....digi pack Who was Roy Hall? Was he the man who discovered Skeeter Davis, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and co-wrote Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On in a Florida swamp? Or was he a bullshit artist who made a handful of very obscure but very wonderful records a halfcentury ago? Listen to the music, read the text and make up your own mind. This much is certain: even if Roy Hall didn't do all he claimed, he was definitely there. He was there when country boogie began morphing slowly into rockabilly and rock 'n' roll. He was running his Nashville nightclub when Jerry Lee Lewis came to town. He recorded See You Later Alligator before Bill Haley and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On before Jerry Lee Lewis. Later, he too recorded at Sun. The full story of Roy Hall's contribution to rock music is finally all in one place, from the primitive delights of Dirty Boogie to the Cat Music of '55 and '56 (All By Myself, Blue Suede Shoes, etc.) to the later Sun recordings. Along the way, there are incredible rarities, like the single for Webb Pierce's hortlived label...which almost no one has ever seen, much less heard. It's an amazing story (even if it's untrue) and the music is equally amazing. HAL HARRIS - GOLD STAR GUITAR (Like his contemporaries Grady Martin in Nashville and Joe Maphis in Los Angeles, ace guitarist 'Fuzzy' Hal Harris carved a deep and distinctive musical signature across hundreds of recording sessions in his adopted home of Houston between 1953 and 1963 and, like them, his idiosyncratic style spawned dozens of young disciples in the local talent pool. Like Scotty Moore in Memphis, too, Hal's age and experience made him the perfect interim manager for budding stars like George Jones and Sleepy La Beef, but as he took on such tasks his own career invariably suffered. This first-time compilation of the finest work of this unsung guitar picker contains all the 1950s recordings issued under his own name as well as a sparkling selection of his session work from those years; from his debut featured spot as one of Curley Williams' Georgia Peach Pickers through his career as houseband-leader and guitarist-of-choice for Pappy Daily's stable of labels - Starday, Dixie and D Records - and his renaissance during the 1970s/1980s rockabilly revival when his exciting solos on those cherished records by Joe Clay, Thumper Jones, Sleepy La Beef, Link Davis, Rock Rogers and Bob Doss were a clarion call to pack the dance floors all over again... 8 page booklet with interesting notes and rare pictures. Track listing: 1 The Carroll County Boys - Carroll County Boogie (Flair), 2 Curley Williams & His Georgia Peach Pickers - I Have Lived, Loved and Learned (Columbia), 3 The Carroll County Boys - Flying Eagle Blues (Flair), 4 Hal Harris - I've Loved, I've Laughed, I've Cried (Pacemaker), 5 Hal Harris - Poor Boy Rag (Pacemaker), 6 Ernie Hunter - Boy Crazy Jane (Rainbow), 7 The Hooper Twins - Twin Hearts and Twin Guitars (Azalea), 8 Larry Fox - Guilty Heart (Starday), 9 George Jones - Taggin' Along (Mercury), 10 Hal Harris - I Don't Know When (Starday)11 Joe Clay - Duck Tail (Vik), 12 Thumper Jones - Rock It (Starday), 13 Al Urban - Gonna Be Better Times (Sarg), 14 Slim Watts - Tu-La-Lou (Starday), 15 Benny Barnes - No Fault Of Mine (Starday), 16 Joe Clay - Sixteen Chicks (Vik), 17 Joe Clay - Doggone It (Vik), 18 Al Urban - Won't Tell You Her Name (Sarg), 19 Thumper Jones - How Come It (Starday), 20 Joe Clay - Slippin' Out and Sneakin' In (Vik), 21 Jimmie & Johnny - I Can't Find The Door Knob (D), 22 Bob Doss - Somebody's Knockin' (Starday), 23 Wortham Watts - Lonesome (D), 24 Rock Rogers - That Ain't It (Starday) 25 Link Davis - Trucker From Tennessee (Starday), 26 Sleepy La Beff - I'm Through (Starday) , 27 Benny Barnes & The Echoes - You Gotta Pay (Starday), 28 Tommy Wood - Can't Play Hookey (D), 29 Rock Rogers - Little Rock Rock (Starday), 30 Bob Doss - Don't Be Gone Long (Starday), 31 Joe Clay - Goodbye Goodbye (Vik), 32 Hal Harris - Jitterbop Baby (Starday), 33 Hal Harris? - I'm Comin' Home (Dixie?), 34 Hal Harris - Please Pass The Biscuits (Dixie) EL TORO Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

FREDDIE HART JUKE JOINT BOOGIE (34 x 1954 - 1959 hillbilly-rockabilly masters from 'CAPITOL/COLUMBIA labels, incs..Title, Whole Hog Or None, Loose Talk, Heart Trouble, Snatch It & Grab It, Dig Boy Dig, Drink Up & Go Home, Baby Don't Leave, Say No More, Loving In Vain, Chain Gang, Mr Fool, My Last Date, On The Prowl Freddie Hart will always be remembered in country music circles for his #1 smash hit Easy Loving from 1971. What most people never realized was that Freddie Hart had been making great country music records for almost twenty years before his big hit! With a plaintive voice and great songwriting abilities (he wrote Loose Talk for Carl Smith, as well as many other tunes for Buck Owens, Wayne Raney and others), Freddie was always top notch country talent. Freddie was from Alabama, and after being under the wing of both Hank Williams and Lefty Frizzell, found himself out in California as a regular performer on the successful 'Town Hall Party' television show. He recorded in the 1950s for both Capitol and Columbia Records, making great hillbilly, country boogie, rockabilly and honky tonk records that were unjustly obscure. Now Bear Family has compiled a solid 'best of the early years' that spans from his 1954 debut to his first breakthrough hit The Wall from 1959. A must have release for West Coast Country and Rockabilly collectors! Track listing: Juke Joint Boogie/Whole Hog Or None/Loose Talk/From Canada To Tennessee/Please Don't Tell Her/Heart Trouble Caught At Last/Snatch It And Grab It/Dig Boy Dig/Drink Up And Go Home/Extra!/On The Prowl/Dance And Sing /Blue/Baby Don't Leave/Heaven Only Knows/Say No More/From A Boy To A Man/Loving In Vain/I'm No Angel /Farther Than My Eyes Can See/I'm Gonna Live For Today/Chain Gang/Mr. Fool/The Key's In The Mailbox /My Last Dime/Careful/Do My Heart A Favor/Lyin' Again/Some Do, Some Don't, Some Will, Some Won't /Heart Attack/Midnight Date/The Wall/Stranger Drive Away) BEAR FAMILY Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |
