LEON McAULIFFE TAKE OFF, AND MORE

(26 original 1950s country/western swing masters from USA DOT label, incs..Take It Away Leon, My Love, Steel Guitar Polka, Lone Star Rag, South Rampart Street Parade, One O'Clock Jump, Red Skin Rag, Panhandle Rag, Hear Me Now, Honky Tonk, Sweetheart, Under The Double Eagle, Johnny Cake Road
Full info: • First ever anthology of Dot recordings by the greatest ever western swing steel guitar stylist!• Originator of several classic country instrumentals, all featured here: Steel Guitar Rag,Panhandle Rag and Take It Away Leon!• Classic Fifties recordings in fabulously restored sound! Leon McAuliffe, the steel guitar-playing Tulsa bandleader, was one of the biggest names in western swing... a star long before he even had his own band. As a member of the legendary Bob Wills' Texas Playboys, he was not only in the best western swing group ever but also in one of the most progressive and blues oriented. McAuliffe carried on in the same vein when he went out on his own. In 1957, McAuliffe signed to Dot. He stayed just over a year, but those recordings have always carried a legendary mystique and have long been sought after by collectors. Bear Family has gathered all of them in this collection, including two previously unissued sides and many classic tracks that have been unavailable since their original issue. Included are fantastic versions of McAuliffe signature tunes like Steel Guitar Rag, Panhandle Rag, Take It Away Leon, the rocking Johnny Cake Road, the hard driving instrumental classic Honky-Tonk, and jumping swing blues like One O'Clock Jump and Summit Ridge Drive. Plus... of course... western swing standbys like Maiden's Prayer! Beside McAuliffe's own influential and exciting steel guitar work, he's ably joined by legendary musicians like Cecil Brower and Keith Coleman on fiddle, guitarist Billy Dozier, saxophonist Rudy Martin, pianist Pee Wee Calhoun and bassist Teddy Adams. Although the emphasis is on instrumental selections, there are several excellent vocals by McAuliffe himself. TRACK LISTING 1. Take It Away, Leon/2. Steel Guitar Polka/3. My Love/4. Lone Star Rag/5. LEON McAULIFFE - TULSA STRAIGHT AHEAD - GONNA SHAKE THIS SHACK TONIGHT

(31 tracks of his classic period 1949 - 1955. 4 previously unissued recordings, incl. a take of Panhandle Rag. All songs are taken from the original sources. Steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe will forever be associated with the King of Western Swing Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys, with whom he recorded the all-time classic Steel Guitar Rag. McAuliffe led his own successful band from 1946 until the early 1970s. In addition to being a trend setting steel guitarist and an appealing vocalist, he was a formidable bandleader and arguably fronted among the best bands the music produced. McAuliffe recorded for various labels over the years, but his classic period was the six years he spent with Columbia. From his first release on the label, the all-time instrumental classic Panhandle Rag, he waxed some of the best, tightest, most swinging and assured western swing ever recorded.

These recordings highly sought after not only by western swing fans but by fans of early rock 'n' roll and rockabilly for the many jump and boogie tracks that anticipated the coming of those styles a few years later. Bear Family has here collected the cream of McAuliffe's six year tenure with Columbia, including a never-issued alternate take of Panhandle Rag, and several other unissued tracks. Highlights include the unissued first – and considerably hotter – version of the hard-swinging blues Hard-Hearted Girl. There are steel guitar classics like Mr. Steel Guitar and Cimarron Rag. A fantastic take on the early rock 'n' roll classic Sh-Boom, as well as what was arguably the best among the twenty-odd versions of the 1950 smash Rag Mop.

Track listing:
Panhandle Rag, Hard-Hearted Girl (1), Hear Me Now, Rag Mop, Cimarron Rag, Take It Away, Leon, Sh-Boom (Life Could Be A Dream), Run 'Em Off, No One For Me, The Three Bears, Bonaparte's Retreat, Blue Guitar Stomp, What've You Got, Birmingham Bounce, I've Never Lived In Tennessee, Eating Right Out Of Your Hand, Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy, Tulsa, Straight Ahead, Jelly Bean Rag, Mr. Steel Guitar, Hard-Hearted Girl (2), Redskin Rag, Wished You Would, Somebody Else Is Beatin' My Time, This Side Of Town, Twin Fiddle Rag, Blacksmith Blues, What, Were And When, Smooth Sailing, There's A Right Way, A Wrong Way, Daylight)

TIM McNAMARA - McNAMARA'S RODEO

(If you didn’t know that McNamara hailed from New South Wales, you could be forgiven for accepting him as another unsung American country hero, such was his vocal style and general choice of material. In point of fact, Timothy Edmund McNamara was the youngest of a family of 11 born on an Australian cattle ranch – in his case on October 10, 1922 – and his performing years spanned the late 1930s into the early 80s. Tim was only 60 when he died in 1983, but crammed a lot of achievements into his relatively short life including hosting an incredibly influential radio show, appearing in a highly-rated Australian movie “Into The Straight”, helping Frank Ifield on the pathway to success and enjoying his own successful recording career. Tim’s career developed at a time when American hillbilly music was extremely popular in Australia and it comes as no surprise that he recorded a whole swathe of songs generally associated with American performers including Old Shep, I’ve Got Five Dollars And It’s Saturday Night, Mocking Bird Hill, Red River Valley, Down The Trail Of Achin’ Hearts, Mother Queen Of My Heart and Honeymoon On A Rocket Ship. Clearly the likes of Hank Snow and Jimmie Rodgers influenced the young Tim McNamara, but he was no imitator. Once fully accepted as a musical entertainer and with a recording contract under his belt, McNamara quickly developed his own style – evolved around a pleasing light tenor voice and yodel thrown in for good measure.

Track listing:
Down By The Railroad Track, Midnight Train, I Can’t Hide The Tears, My Curly Headed Buckaroo, Swiss Lullaby, I Wish All My Children Were Babies Again, Carolina Waltz, Old Shep, My Precious Memory, Slippin’ Around With Sweet Georgia Brown, Christmas On The Range, My Kind Of Country, We’re Branding A Little Critter, I’ve Got Five Dollars And It’s Saturday Night, Heartbreak Trail, Down The Trail Of Achin’ Hearts, A Girl Without A Sweetheart, A Strange Little Girl, Keep A Light In Your Window Tonight, The Old Barn Dance, Tell A Woman, I’ve Just Got To Be A Cowboy, Honeymoon On A Rocket Ship, Mr. Moon, McNamara’s Rodeo, Mother The Queen Of My Heart)

UNCLE DAVE MACON KEEP MY SKILLET GOOD AND GREASY - THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS

(9 x CDs + 1 x DVD & 176 page hardback book. 248 trax from the Grandfather of Country Music, includes: all commercial recordings, rare Test Pressings, Rare Home Recordings, unissued 'Opry' Air-Checks from 1939 - 1940. DVD contains a 1940 film ''Grand Ole Opry'' starring Uncle Dave - incs U.K p+p.
Long Live Uncle Dave' Pete Seeger, April 2004 If Jimmie Rodgers is the Father of Country Music, then Uncle Dave Macon is surely the Grandfather. He brought dozens of old folk songs, vaudeville songs, blues, gospel songs, and comedy songs into the Twentieth Century. He was one of the first country stars to record, the first star of the Grand Ole Opry, and one of the first members elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame. Above all, he was an entertainer supreme, and one of the most accomplished banjoists in country history. Here for the first time are all his commercial recordings, as well as several test pressings, rare home recordings, and an entire side of recently discovered Opry air checks from 1939-1940 that have never been released. The sound of these 248 ageless classics has been digitally enhanced without damaging their integrity or purity. Mastering was by Grammy-winning Chris King, and the final preparation by Jürgen Crasser. The DVD contains the 1940 film 'Grand Ole Opry' that features Macon. The book contains newly discovered photos and illustrations, complete song lyrics transcribed by Paul Ritscher and Robert Nobley, a newly researched biography by Charles Wolfe, and a revised discography by Ralph Rinzler, Norm Cohen and Tony Russell. 'Folks - if you ain't right, get right. And let your conscience be your guide, because I'm going to play with more heterogeneous constapolicy double flavor and unknown quality than you!' Uncle Dave Macon 'Uncle Dave Macon was the most unique individual I ever knew. Everything he did was the Uncle Dave way. When I started out, he was the biggest star on the Grand Ole Opry, and when we toured, it was Uncle Dave who drew the crowds for Roy Acuff.' Roy Acuff 'Uncle Dave was probably our first rock star. He brought a lot of good music to the table, and he knocked the door down for all of us to be characters that played country music.' Marty Stuart 'He may not have been the best banjo player or the best singer, but he sure as heck was the best SOMETHING.' Curly Fox 'And now friends, here he is, Uncle Dave Macon, the Dixie Dewdrop, with his pug hat, chin whiskers, and that million dollar Tennessee smile. Take'er away, Uncle Dave!' George Hay, founder of The Grand Ole Opry

ROSE MADDOX - RECKLESS LOVE AND BOLD ADVENTURE

- In the 1930s and 1940s, Rose Maddox and her brothers blazed a trail that would establish California as the centre of hardcore country excellence that would eventually spawn such important acts as Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Wynn Stewart.
- By the 1950s, Rose had become the inspiration to just about every young girl who wanted to sing country - from Wanda Jackson through Linda Ronstadt to Rosie Flores - and her influence on these and a vast number of others can never be overstated.
- Rose was not yet fifty when she released her only Takoma album in 1975. yet her career had already spanned 40 years and 5 decades. Like many of her later recordings, it features her working with excellent bluegrass musicians - including Country Gazette/Flying Burrito Brothers fiddler Byron Berline - and singing a mixture of songs by contemporary writers such as Dolly Parton, Hillman Hall, Hoyt Axton and the aforementioned Merle Haggard.
- 'Reckless Love And Bold Adventure' also features a number of selections written by Rose (under her 'real name, Roselea Brogdon) and her sister in law, Alta Troxel, plus remakes of two of her and her brothers' biggest selling records of the 1940s, the sacred 'Gathering Flowers For The Masters Bouquet' and 'Tramp On the Street'.
- This album has been never been previously available on CD and has been out of print as a vinyl and cassette for more than a quarter of a century.

Track listing: RECKLESS LOVE AND BOLD ADVENTURE, HEART OF A COUNTRY SONG, IT'S BEEN A LONG LONG TIME, LION IN THE WINTER, MY TENNESSEE MOUNTAIN HOME, TRAMP ON THE STREET, MR JACKSON, WILLIE'S WINTER LOVE, HAPPY EVERYDAY I LIVE, PASS ME BY, DANCING SHOES, GATHERING FLOWERS FOR THE MASTER'S BOUQUET

ROSE MADDOX THE ONE ROSE

(4 x cd box-set with 16 page book....Petite and grandmotherly, Rose Maddox can still belt it out with the best of them. Between 1959 and 1965 she recorded a series of albums for Capitol that are reissued complete here with many rare singles and 15 previously unissued recordings. This is country music that makes no apology for being country. A couple of the Maddox brothers were still on-hand to give these records the same fire as the old Maddox Brothers and Rose records, and Bill Monroe and Reno & Smiley were on-hand for Rose's 'Sings Bluegrass' LP. Altogether there are 111 sides here that capture the riproaring sound of Rose Maddox at her very best.
