EARL SCRUGGS – CLASSIC BLUEGRASS LIVE 1959-1966 (Less than seven years separates Scruggs' classic original of Flint Hill Special and the spirited reinterpretation he delivered at the 1959 Newport Folk Festival. That latter version, recorded with Hylo Brown & the Timberliners, is one of eight tracks by this pick-up aggregation and offers a fascinating insight into Scruggs' work outside the Foggy Mountain Boys. By 1959, Earl Scruggs was already a banjo superstar, a key cornerstone founder in bluegrass music and a cult figure of the emerging 'folk' scene. Invited to the Newport Folk Festival without Lester Flatt or the duo's band the Foggy Mountain Boys, Scruggs was paired with Brown's Timberliners, who rose to the occasion of playing in such illustrious company. Two previously unreleased songs Girl In The Blue Velvet Band and Love And Wealth are added bonuses. The remaining ten sides are a showcase for Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs with the Foggy Mountain Boys. Recorded at the Newport Folk Festivals of 1960 and 1966, they include renditions of Orange Blossom Special, Ballad Of Jed Clampett (their hit theme music from the TV show The Beverly Hillbillies), Salty Dog Blues, Jimmy Brown The Newsboy and the instrumental Foggy Mountain Chimes. Not all of the Newport recordings made during the 50s and early 60s successfully capture the excitement of the day: sometimes the recording equipment and makeshift nature of the performance merely documents the moment. With this Earl Scruggs album, however, all the verve, style, class and drive of the banjo master is fully captured. Full track listing: 01 JOHN HENRY 02 FLINT HILL SPECIAL 03 GIRL IN THE BLUE VELVET BAND 04 LOVE AND WEALTH 05 EARL'S BREAKDOWN 06 GATHERING FLOWERS FROM THE HILLSIDE 07 THE PRISONER'S SONG 08 CUMBERLAND GAP 09 SALTY DOG BLUES 10 BEFORE I MET YOU 11 LITTLE CABIN ON THE HILL 12 JIMMY BROWN THE NEWSBOY 13 THE ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL 14 WILL YOU BE LONESOME TOO? 15 FOGGY MOUNTAIN CHIMES 16 THE WABASH CANNONBALL 17 WHEN THE SAINTS GO MARCHING IN 18 THE BALLAD OF JED CLAMPETT (THEME FROM THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES)) VANGUARD Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

MACK SELF EASY TO LOVE - THE SUN YEARS ...PLUS (23 original SUN label recordings with un-issued alternate takes PLUS 8 songs recorded between 1960 - 1972, a total of 19 un-issued recordings. Includes: Goin' Crazy, Everyday, Easy To Love, Lovin' Memories, Little One, Mad At You, Willie Brown, Lovin' Memories, Jody McClain, Folsom Prison Blues, That Mexican Limbo, Breaking New Ground - great Memphis r'n'r!!! Full info: • The most in-depth collection of Mack Self's early music ever released.• Includes every title recorded at Sun along with previously unissued alternate takes.• Contains full bio with new interview material and previously unpublished photographs.• Also contains eight post-Sun recordings (1960-1972) including 19 previously unissued sides. Sam Phillips had a chance to work with two natives of Helena, Arkansas: Conway Twitty (a/k/a Harold Jenkins) and Mack Self. Phillips chose Mack Self. Although his choice was never rewarded financially with a hit record, this collection of Mack's early work shows that Phillips' judgement was as sound as ever. Half of the titles Mack recorded at Sun were released on two 45s during the 1950s. The remaining material had to wait almost 30 years for Sun archaeologists to discover. It was worth the wait. Tracks like Going Crazy and Lovin' Memories revealed that Mack Self could turn his hand to rockabilly with the best of them. But back then, Sam Phillips was more interested in Mack's pure country soul. It was a brave decision that went against Sun's growing reputation for unleashing the music of southern wild men. At the least, Mack's two releases on Sun and Phillips International reveal how deeply Sam Phillips was impressed by the charms of Mack's pure country style. Easy To Love remains one of the most beautiful country songs of its era, and here we present it in three versions, showing that it didn't always sound like the version on Sun 273. Everyday and Mad At You (also presented in previously unreleased alternate versions) retain their power as well. These are timeless recordings, beautifully written and cleanly performed. Mack worked with the best of Sun sidemen like Stan Kesler, Bill Cantrell, Billy Riley, Johnny Bernero, Roland Janes, Jimmy Van Eaton, W. S. Holland and Martin Willis. Their contributions are all on record here. This collection brings together every title recorded by Mack Self at 706 Union Avenue between 1955 - 1959. Along with previously unissued alternate takes and false starts, we now have the fullest picture yet of Mack Self's days at Sun. Previously unpublished photos and new interview material by Sun historian Hank Davis offer further depth to our coverage. In addition, we include eight post-Sun tracks recorded by Mack in Memphis between 1960 - 1972. The collection concludes with a few reminiscences about these historic times spoken in Mack's own words. Finally there is a priceless moment here available nowhere else: an impromptu acoustic performance of Mack's musical tribute to his days at the Sun label during its Golden Era.TRACK LISTING 1. JEAN SHEPARD THE MELODY RANCH GIRL (5 x cd box-set with 36 page book.... When Jean Shepard burst onto the country music scene in 1952, she had few female role models to follow. In the early Fifties, country music was still a largely male-dominated business and some people actually believed women were incapable of selling large numbers of country records. With the help of country bandleader and singer Hank Thompson, Jean landed a recording contract with Capitol and managed to change that opinion. Here are 151 legendary sides that Jean recorded for Capitol between 1952 and 1964, including her first #1 single A Dear John Letter (featuring Ferlin Husky), Two Hoops And A Holler, A Satisfied Mind, Beautiful Lies and Second Fiddle (To An Old Guitar). This set also features Jean's 1955 landmark album 'Songs Of A Love Affair'--widely acknowledged as the first concept album recorded by a female country artist, as well as her 'Got You On My Mind' 'Lonesome Love' and 'Heartaches And Tears' albums. GENE SIMMONS - I DONE TOLD YOU (Not to be confused with the Spandex-clad bass player from Kiss or the late British actress, Tupelo-born Gene Simmons was responsible for some of the best Rockabilly cuts never to emerge on the Sun label! A gifted tunesmith, Simmons’ self-penned gems such as ‘Juicy Fruit’ and ‘Crazy Woman’ languished unissued for years, whilst his only Sun release, ‘Drinkin’ Wine’ b/w ‘I Done Told You’, was held back by label boss Sam Phillips for eighteen months, by which point the Rockabilly craze had peaked nixing his chances of a hit. Covering the period 1955-58, this collection gathers together all of Simmons’ Sun recordings including alternate takes and unreleased masters. Chart success would eventually come on Hi Records with the 1964 Hallowe’en novelty hit ‘Haunted House’ and thanks to the 70s Rockabilly revival, he enjoyed renewed acclaim among Sun aficionados in Europe and the US. JIMMIE SKINNER DOIN' MY TIME (6 cd country set & large 92 page hardback book, covers 1947 - 1962 masters from 'RED BARN/RADIO ARTISTS/CAPITOL/DECCA/MERCURY' labels, with many rare trax from acetates ... Jimmie Skinner drew the roadmap that today's 'alt-country' singer-songwriters follow. Inspired by the bluesmen of his youth, Skinner wrote songs of melancholy, despair and anger, framed by catchy, unforgettable melodies. Frustrated in his attempts to land a major label contract, he independently produced and distributed his own records. Nearly forty years old when he launched his professional career, Skinner rose to fame during the late forties through enduring songs like Let's Say Goodbye (Like We Said Hello), Will You Be Satisfied That Way, You Don't Know My Mind, Don't Give Your Heart To A Rambler, and Doin' My Time. The consummate country music outsider, Skinner rejected conventional Nashville protocols. His idiosyncratic musical vision simply didn't fit contemporary music industry tastes and trends. Skinner stripped country music to its raw essentials, much as Sun Records' Sam Phillips later did with Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and especially Johnny Cash and His Tennessee Two. His accompaniment was minimal and often stark. Skinner thrashed his guitar with an aggressive upstroke, creating a backbeat that a generation of rockabilly singers later emulated. Mandolinist Ray Lunsford dutifully followed Skinner's quirky sense of meter by rarely deviating from the melody. If Skinner's phrasing was reminiscent of Jimmie Rodgers and early Ernest Tubb, his voice was unmistakably his own - a warm, baritone growl that boomed out of the era's jukeboxes. When the major labels finally beckoned, Skinner battled to maintain his artistic integrity. His persistence paid off in the late fifties with a string of country chart hits that defied the dominating Nashville Sound, including I Found My Girl In The U.S.A., What Makes A Man Wander and Dark Hollow. Rather than bow to changing tastes in country music, Skinner voluntarily ended his recording career. Once one of country music's most beloved, best-known figures, Skinner is barely remembered today. Relatively few of his singles saw reissue on LP, much less compact disc. This long-overdue collection finally restores Skinner's most important recordings to print. Five compact discs feature Skinner's classic 1947-1962 recordings for Red Barn, Radio Artists, Capitol, Decca and Mercury, along with acetates and rare bluegrass tracks sold exclusively through the Jimmie Skinner Music Center. A sixth disc features Skinner reading excerpts from his uncompleted autobiography. His compelling narrative spins tales of the Great Depression, his first efforts at songwriting and frustrating attempts to get on record, his peak years on Knoxville radio, and decision to return to his southwestern Ohio home. Working closely with the Skinner family, his former guitarist Rusty York, and others associated with the singer, country music researcher David Sax recovered unissued Radio Artists master acetates along with dozens of photos, clippings and printed souvenirs. Drawing upon contemporary trade magazines and fanzines, unpublished oral histories and new interviews, Dave Samuelson details Skinner's fascinating life, music and career in a 92-page hardcover book. 'Doin' My Time' stands as the definitive collection of one of country music's most intriguing personalities.
