THE CAVA-TONE RECORDS STORY (24 great blues tracks from this rare label. Bob Geddins, the owner of Cava-Tone Records, was a gaunt, bespectacled, slightly built, witty and charismatic man, whose word was his bond. His habit of making handshake agreements often led to bitterness and betrayal, yet he survived for over 4 decades in the music business, during which time he produced and recorded a string of fine down-home Blues, Gospel and R&B records. Songwriter, promoter, Blues-singer, cotton picker, welder, graphic artist, pipe fitter, photographer, press mechanic, radio, T.V. and car-radiator repairman all rolled into one, he was able to master almost anything that needed the use of his hands. He was a constant source of repertoire for the bigger nationally distributed R&B and Blues labels. The label helped establish several recording stars who went on to become major sellers. These artists include such legends as Jimmy McCracklin, Lowell Fulson and Roy Hawkins. Compiled and produced for reissue by Opal Louis Nations this CD comprises 26 original recordings and comes complete with a detailed history of Bob Geddins and his recording empire. To augment this fine music the package presents rare and unseen photographs, a lengthy essay on the history of Bob Geddins, his label and his many achievements. This release continues the story of Geddins as featured in our recent, highly acclaimed 'Trilon Records Story' and 'Bob Geddin’s Big Town Records Story'. Track listing: 1 Prison Bound - Lowell Fulson, 2 My Baby Left Me - Lowell Fulson, 3 Nobody's Business - Bob Geddins' Cavaliers with Jimmy Wilson, 4 Ghost Riders - Bob Geddins' Cavaliers with Jimmy Wilson, 5 Bad Luck And Trouble - Jimmy McCracklin, 6 Railroad Blues - Jimmy McCracklin, 7 Poor Boy - Ulysses James, 8 Stormin' And Rainin' - Lowell Fulson, 9 Jimmy's Blues - Jimmy McCracklin, 10 Lonesome Blues - Emery Franklin, 11 It's A Sin To Tell A Lie - Jimmy Wilson with 'Scat Man' Crothers, 12 Mistake In Life - Jimmy Wilson, 13 Ain't No Fault Of Mine - Roy Hawkins & The Hawk's Men, 14 They Raided The Joint - Roy Hawkins & The Hawk's Men, 15 September Song - Saunders King, 16 Nobody Wants Me - Saunders King, 17 When Your Lover Has Gone - Saunders King, 18 Big Fat Butterfly - Saunders King, 19 Brother Moses - Rising Star Gospel Singers, 20 While The Blood Is Running Warm In Your Veins - Rising Star Gospel Singers, 21 I Trust In God - Rising Star Gospel Singers, 22 Telephone Line - Rising Star Gospel Singers, 23 (I'm) So Tired I Could Cry - Bob Geddins' Cavaliers, 24 West Side Jump (Boogie Boy Boogie) - West Side Trio) U.K ACROBAT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

THE JAXYSON RECORDS STORY (super rare blues from this legendary label from California. The Jaxyson Records story is full of intriguing anomalies. The label was started by Jesse Jaxyson in a small room at the back of his electrical repair shop. Of the nine known Jaxyson releases, only two are Blues. The same disproportion exists for the 17 rescued acetates which have an interesting history associated with them. A fellow by the name of Dan and a friend found them on a garbage dump in Martinez. The couple took the acetates to a swap-meet in Hayward where they were purchased by Dick Bass who had them remastered by Marc Ryan at his Bennett House Studios in North San Juan, California. Track listing: 1. A.G. Smith - Step It Up And Go, 2. A.G. Smith - Wig I Brought, 3. Joseph Butler - Texas Blues, 4. Gold Rush - Hold That Train Conductor, 5. Johnny Fuller - From Bad To Worse, 6. Mercydee - Goin' Back Down To Old Mobile, 7. Mercydee - Jaxyson's Scratch, 8. Mercydee - Weep Below Children (Weep No More), 9. Mercydee - I'll Meet You In The Morning, 10. THE MILTONE RECORDS STORY (Two discs 77 and 76 minutes each approximately. The sound is good to fair, with occasional surface noise. These sides, all recorded between 1946-1949 are from a man known to most as an r&b artist of some repute. Milton, himself, shows up on several tracks here, with his group the Solid Senders. This collection is a treasure trove of r&b with a few blues sides, from both well known artists and some lesser known. The more well known singer/musicians include, besides Milton,,Maxwell Davis and his Orchestra,Paul Gayten Trio, and Roy Brown and his Orchestra. As is often the case,it's the lesser knowns here that are the greatest surprise. This collection has a number of artists like Effie Smith,Jesse Thomas, and Little Miss Cornshucks, who will be unknown except to real fans of this music. However, their tracks are every bit the equal of the well known people above. Together, these tracks make up some of the best big-city r&b of the era. Smooth but emotive vocals with,usually,horn/piano lead instrument (s) with the rest of the group playing the melodies. The booklet,as usual, from the folks at Acrobat Records is informative as far as they can take it. Many owner/artists have limited or non-existent biographies. An example is one of the partners in Miltone,Forrest Perkins. The booklet states that his early life is a mystery, since he couldn't be found in the census. Also he was to disappear mysteriously and possibly die in the Philippines in 1951-but no one knows for sure. The booklet also includes a number of biographies on several of the artists featured, including an overview of Roy Milton's life. An added bonus are the label reproductions of cartoon characters acting out the various song titles. A book of these would be wonderful. All in all, this is one of the better small label compilations available. Hopefully there will be other collections of Milton's label in the future. For this is some great post-war r&b with just a pinch of blues mixed in for added color. It's evocative, swinging, moody music. The kind that can easily transport the listener back in time, when you might hear this music on a jukebox or live in some club, where the beer is a dime,on a late dark night in Los Angeles. Track listing: Disc 1: 1. Same Old Stuff - Jesse Thomas, 2. D Double Due Love You - Jesse Thomas, 3. Zetter Blues - Jesse Thomas, 4. Mountain Key Blues - Jesse Thomas, 5. Wee Baby Brother Blues (Wee Wee Brother) - Effie Smith, 6. Sugar Mama Blues - John Criner & His Orchestra, 7. Answer to RM Blues - Effie Smith, 8. It's Been So Long - Effie Smith, 9. THE TRILON RECORDS STORY 1946 - 1948 (3 CD set of rare blues / gospel / rhythm & blues. On January 24th the Oakland Tribune announced the grand opening of the Trilon Record Manufacturing Company at 3123 San Pablo Avenue. Principals included Harry Leader, President, George Drummond, Vice President, and Rene T. LaMarre, Secretary and Treasurer.Harry Leader was the head of four big, successful auto supply stores in the Bay Area. He attributed his success to 'efficient and courteous service.' audevillian, theatre proprietor, business adventurer, speedway enthusiast, sportswriter, M.C, Rene T. LaMarre was born on August 14, 1907. Little is known of LaMarre’s formative years. He first appeared in the public prints during the late 1930s as a vaudevillian talent scouting M.C. at various movie houses in the Oakland, California area. Leader and LaMarre set a goal of producing 250,000 phonograph records per week. Artists were signed and ready. A staff of ninety people was hired and twelve presses were planned to soon run on a twenty-four hour basis. A full complement of twenty-two presses was envisaged. This writer believes that most of this was press-hype and sales pitch and doubts that such a scale of operation ever came about. LaMarre’s link to the theatre world put him in touch with artists who would eventually record for Trilon. The most successful of these were the Vagabonds (with and without Raymond Manton), an Italian-American integrated musical quartet (meaning they both sang, arranged, managed and accompanied themselves on musical instruments). This slapstick unit was composed of the extremely talented driving force of the group, accordionist Attilio Risso (whose signature expressionless face act was later ripped off by Keely Smith), comedy guitarist Don Germano, Al Torrieri, rhythm guitar, and Pete Peterson, bass. This album presents many of the great Trilon Records singles that span a number of genres. LONNIE DONEGAN - MIDNIGHT SPECIAL - THE SKIFFLE YEARS 1953 - 1957 (73 tracks on 3 CDs, songs taken from singles, EPs, LPs, rarities, studio outtakes, session work, live performances & radio broadcasts. One of the UK's few genuine musical pioneers, LONNIE DONEGAN exploded out of a turgid early 50s UK Jazz scene with the million-selling 'Rock Island Line', creating Skiffle virtually single-handedly and in doing so, establishing himself as the first home-grown Pop star of the R&R era. His impact was extraordinary and between 1956-57, his success and popularity virtually defied belief. Indeed, during this period, the undisputed 'King Of Skiffle' racked up no less than 13 hit singles, whilst his debut EP and LP also sold in sufficient quantities to qualify for inclusion in the NME's Top 30 singles chart. Although the hits dried up in 1962, Lonnie remained hugely a popular performer throughout his life, effortlessly able to sell out even the largest venues. In the years immediately preceding his untimely death (in November 2002, following a heart attack) he'd achieved something of a career resurgence, his profile having increased significantly on the back of triumphant appearances at prestigious festivals like Glastonbury and Fleadh, and successful tours & albums with men like Van Morrison, Albert Lee and Chris Barber. This unique compilation collects together every available track that Lonnie is known to have played a significant part on between 1953-57. It traces his extraordinary rise from his role as a singing, banjo-playing sideman - initially with Ken Colyer (Disc 1, tracks 1-6), then Chris Barber (Disc 1 tracks 7-25) - to his own subsequent solo Skiffle career, after striking out on his own in late 1955 following the stupendous success of 'Rock Island Line'. Bringing together singles, EP & LP tracks, rarities, studio outtakes, live performances and radio broadcasts, this is the most comprehensive anthology of Lonnie's Skiffle years, to date. Track listing: DISC ONE: 1. HARD TIME BLUES (live), 2. NOBODY'S CHILD (live), 3. YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND (live), 4. MIDNIGHT SPECIAL (voc: Ken Colyer) (live), 5. JOHN HENRY (radio session), 6. DRUG STORES AND SODA POPS - 75 SLABS OF TEEN ANGST (3 CD set, 75 original hits & rockers - 56 page booklet by Stuart Coleman. As Rock & Roll took a firm hold in the United States during the mid-50s, a new generation of Teen Idols emerged to take over from the tired, washed out old crooners and supper club singers who'd been boring young people to death since the 40s. Led, of course, by the highly controversial Elvis Presley, the new breed included such estimable names as Eddie Cochran, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Gracie, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Gene Vincent, Tommy Sands, Buddy Knox, Sanford Clark etc. A few survivors from the early 50s somehow managed to update their sound to register some fairly commendable R&R-styled hits - take a bow, Johnnie Ray, Guy Mitchell and Andy Williams - whilst there was also a group of crossover Country singers who enjoyed brief spells as teenage idols, guys like George Hamilton IV, Bobby Helms, Jim Lowe, Sonny James and Marty Robbins. Elsewhere, there was something of a splinter group fronted by Pat Boone, including singers like Paul Anka, Jimmie Rodgers and Tab Hunter, who sought to be rather less controversial, trying to combine R&R with 'traditional, fresh-faced conservative values' - boy-next-door R&R! But whatever their background or musical persuasion, these artists all cut records which tapped directly into the teenage market, albeit (in some cases) just briefly. All are featured on this 3-CD boxed set, which presents 75 slices of mid-50s Teen Angst, perfectly recalling the days of soda pops, drug stores, drive-ins and high school Rock & Roll. Each of these artists' major hits of the period are included herein, and virtually every track featured was either a major hit or a genre-defining record. The 56-page booklet is laden with 50s vintage pics and memorabilia, and also includes detailed liner notes, by R&R guru Stuart Colman. Track listing: DISC ONE: 1.
