JAMES CARR – SOUL SURVIVOR

(The late master of deep southern soul with another stunning album again produced by long time mentor Quinton M Claunch, this time from 1993. A brand new recording from soul singer James Carr is something to look forward to. One of the greatest of Memphis soul legends, James Carr has been underrated for far too long (Q magazine appropriately titled it's recent four-page history of the singer The Lost Voice Of Soul). Born on June 13th, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee, James started out his career singing gospel. He sang briefly with the famous Soul Stirrers (a group that also spawned Sam Cooke and Johnnie Taylor) and was a member of the Harmony Echoes when he was discovered by Roosevelt Jamison and brought to Goldwax Records. There, between 1966 and 69, he had nine Top R & B hit singles including You've Got My Mind Messed Up, Love Attack, Pouring Water On A Drowning Man and the originals of the classics To Love Somebody and Dark End Of The Street (the ultimate southern soul cheating song-.-recorded subsequently by the likes of Percy Sledge). After Goldwax folded in 1969. James moved to Atlantic where in 1970 and 71 he had four sides released, among them 71's I'll Put It To You. Increasing health problems removed him from the music scene until a reunion in 1977 with Roosevelt Jamison for the River City single Let Me Be Right. Subsequently, he returned to the church but in 1990 surprised his earlier fans with the return to secular form shown on the brand new album Take Me To The Limit (Ace CDCH 310). Q magazine's feature, which came out after that album's release, said James Carr's place in soul music history is assured but this second album of new recordings shows that the soulman can still pull out all the stops and touch all the right emotional buttons. Produced by Quinton Claunch (who also produced all 48 of his earlier Goldwax sides) at Imperial Studio, Germantown, Tennessee, with a soulful horn section and a funky little rhythm section (including the guitar of Michael Toles), James Carr tells his story -

JAMES CARR – YOU GOT MY MIND MESSED UP

(The legendary soul man's seminal 1967 album in its original running order, augmented by a further twelve Carr killers, several released here for the first time ever
Quite rightly, Ace's acquisition of the Goldwax catalogue in 2001 caused much excitement amongst all hardcore collectors of Southern Soul. For years the label's relatively-small-but-undoubtedly-mighty catalogue of masters had been crying out for the kind of anthologising that its esteemed repertoire has always deserved. And we'd like to think that our first two CD releases - the James Carr complete Goldwax singles A's and B's, and the multi-artist Goldwax Story Vol. 1 - more than met the exacting criteria of this most obsessive (in the nicest possible way!) band of record collectors.
James' singles CD was, by some distance, Ace's biggest seller of 2001. And the Story is already among the best selling soul compilations ACE ever had. The sales to date of both these albums suggest that ACE on the right track with Goldwax. Now, to delight his admirers even further, ACE are continuing a James Carr reissue programme with an expanded version of JC's first Goldwax album, featuring the original 12 tracks that made up You Got My Mind Messed Up plus a further dozen gems that never saw the light of day at the time of recording - some of which, indeed, have never seen the LOD prior to the issue of this CD! (We also have a vinyl issue of just the dozen tracks that made up the original album, for those who've still not quite gotten to grips with this new-fangled CD thingy...)
As well as being a seminal soul 45, YGMMMU is - for this writer - one of the greatest soul albums of all time, period, if only for the fact that it includes both the title track and everybody's #1 deep soul selection The Dark End Of The Street. Most people I know would happily shell out for an album that included just these two tracks - myself included. But, of course, the remaining 10 cuts and the originally unissued material are all of a standard that makes purchase mandatory. James being among the top two or three soul singers of all time - equalled only, in this man's opinion, by his late brothers in soul Otis Redding and O.V. Wright - there's no way things could be otherwise.
Even if you have some of this material elsewhere, there's little likelihood that you'll have it in the kind of sound quality that it comes in here. For a start, virtually all the tracks have been mixed, from the original Goldwax multitracks, into stereo by obsessive JC fan and all-round good bloke Rob Keyloch. (The original YGMMMU album and the Goldwax 45s were all originally released in mono). I should stress that these tracks are mixed rather than remixed - Rob has faithfully followed the template of the original mono 45s, and in doing so he has created mixes that couldn't sound any more true to the music if Goldwax founder Quinton Claunch had fashioned them himself, in Sam Phillips' studios on Memphis' Madison Avenue, in 1967.
Then there's the uniform excellence of the bonus tracks - which, for once, really DO justify the epithet 'Bonus'. Several of these have previously only appeared on hard to find, expensive-if-you-do-find-'em Japanese CDs and vinyl, and some - like James' terrific version of Willie Walker's A Lucky Loser, are completely new finds from our audit of the Goldwax mastertapes. James' ?îouttakes' are as good as any, and better than most, released masters of most of his peers. The dozen presented here would stand up well as an album in their own right, and they may well surprise a number of people who didn't previously realise that James' repertoire also encompassed material from the Young Rascals and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, as well as his own admitted hero - the aforementioned Mr Redding.
Outside of the studio James may have been a fully paid-up member of life's walking wounded club (and if you didn't already know this, the excellent sleeve notes by respected author Barney Hoskyns will tell you James' sad story in full). In front of a mike, though, he was always on the money and seldom less than unbeatable, whatever he chose to sing. (Sadly, we'll never know how he might have sounded doing the phone book, but you can bet it would have been a killer version!)
Here is one great singer, singing a pile of great songs.

JAMES CARR – A MAN NEEDS A WOMAN

(The Memphis legend's second album is every bit the equal of his first. The original track listing is augmented on the CD by bonus tracks for maximum soul satisfaction.
There's no doubt that ACE expanded version of James Carr's second (and, sadly, final) Goldwax album A MAN NEEDS A WOMAN will be one of the highlights for most Ace/Kent customers. The release of our expanded CD of You Got My Mind Messed Up (CDKEND 211) brought mostly praise from the press and public alike. However, a very small minority deemed it necessary to bellyache about some inevitable song duplication from our JC Complete Goldwax Singles set (CDKEND 202), ignoring a) the 'duplicated' tracks were part of the original You Got My Mind Messed album, and thus had to be part of the CD issue and b) the tracks in question were presented in stereo on YGMMMU, and in mono - per the original 45s - on JCCGS. As with ACE'S earlier reissue of the YGMMMU album, ACE have expanded the original track listing to take advantage of the 79+ minute running time of a CD. James' version of Johnny Cash's Ring Of Fire has never been released before anywhere in the world. Those who wish to listen to the original US album will find it occupying tracks 1-11 of this CD, and if your preference is for the UK version, it spans tracks 1-16.
Speaking of stereo, studio whiz and JC fan Rob Keyloch has once again remixed the original Goldwax multitrack tapes - where such things still exist - to present most of the stereo selections in a way that gives the listener a better sound balance, while retaining all the integrity of the original 1960s mixes. I did say 'most' - the multi for More Love and You Didn't Know It But You Had Me don't appear to have survived, so ACE deferred to the original Goldwax mixes on those tracks out of necessity. Where no stereo tapes exist, ACE presented the songs in their original mono mixdowns.
Highlights abound in the originally issued and originally unissued selections. The title track is both a masterpiece of lyrical simile, and one of James' finest all-round deep soul performances. Don't be fooled by the seemingly innocuous titles of A Message To Young Lovers and A Woman Is A Man's Best Friend for they, too, are both deeper than soul itself and explicit exercises in musical self-pity. James' take on the Masqueraders' Vietnam war song Let's Face Facts is as anguished a performance as you'd expect from a man who's going off to a war from which he might never return. Tracks like the originally unissued Lifetime Of A Man and You Hurt So Good are definitive of what Southern soul is really about. And as for the reprises of Dark End Of The Street and You Got My Mind Messed Up, they are as welcome here as they would be on a thousand other CD reissues and remain high watermarks for James, Goldwax and the whole genre of deep soul. Colin Dilnot's wonderfully vivid sleevenote recreation of the 'Dark End' session is almost worth the price of the CD on its own!) Sadly, though, this release virtually concludes ACE JC reissue programme, as ACE now digitized all bar four of the man's Goldwax masters. The remaining four - the alternate recordings of Love Attack and Pouring Water On A Drowning Man, the duet with Barbara Perry on I Can't Help Myself and the unedited version of What The World needs Now Is Love – will be released on forthcoming Kent compilations.
James Carr's body of work may have been scandalously small in comparison to the span of his career, but he made just about every second of it count. Here are another 24 classic sides from this seminal Memphis soulman

JAMES CARR – MY SOUL IS SATISFIED: THE BEST OF THE REST

(All good things do eventually come to an end, and so it is that ACE conclude James Carr reissue programme, with a sixth and final CD. My Soul Is Satisfied rounds up all the remaining studio masters of James - those still in existence, at least - in a package that upholds its title in every way. With this release, at least one version of every traceable James Carr studio recording is now available on an Ace or Kent CD
My Soul Is Satisfied covers virtually the entire span of James Carr's recording career, from 1967 to 2000, in a manner that befits the revered status of late great soulman. It features unissued and hard-to-find material from every stage of his career, including some of the best recordings you may have yet to hear. It's taken over a year to check and double check all the original Goldwax tapes in ACE vaults, and to organise the licensing-in of the repertoire James cut for Atlantic, River City and SoulTrax. The end result was more than worth the time it took to pull it all together.
In the course of an hour and a bit we hear James at his mid-60s 'original Goldwax' peak, with stunning alternate recordings, takes and mixes of some of his classic Goldwax 45s and album cuts. We hear him duetting with criminally under-recorded Goldwax thrush Barbara Perry and having a successful bash at interpreting Bacharach & David and Holland-Dozier-Holland. As we move through the CD we take in both sides of James' sole Atlantic 45 and all three of his mid 70s recordings for River City (only two of which were originally issued) - the sum total of James' issued output between 1971 and 1991, in fact. The remainder of the CD consists primarily of recordings that James cut with his mentor and original producer Quinton Claunch as the 20th century drew to a close and that were mostly originally issued on a SoulTrax CD that mixed them with previously issued SoulTrax sides. Recorded with a real Memphis rhythm section and featuring James in superb voice, these are as much a treat for the ears as are the selections from a quarter of a century earlier.
ACE are also privileged to include what seems to be the last recording James ever made, his demo of A Woman's Got The Power. Quinton Claunch told me that James wasn't feeling too well on the day of the session, but that he agreed to lay a guide vocal of the basic rhythm track with a view to going back and putting down a better one when his voice was in better shape. Sadly that never happened, but as you'll hear, there's nothing wrong with the basic, one take, job he did here.
One or two of the sources are sadly not of the standard that ACE would routinely entertain on an Ace or Kent CD, but ACE figured that James' fans would rather endure a bit of lo-fi here and there than to be deprived of a precious unissued performance. Thus the guys downstairs at Sound Mastering - who made everything sound as good as you'll ever hear it, anyway - were asked to relax their super-high audio standards, where necessary, in the name of satisfying the James completist (aren't we all that?). Most of the tracks sound colossally brilliant, of course - and would probably have done so if James had recorded them from inside a cardboard box. Fittingly the CD concludes with the only three recordings of James Carr, gospel singer. These were originally released on a now-deleted Jubilee Hummingbirds CD back in the early 1990s, and it's a fair bet that a lot of James' fans will not even be aware that they exist. Prior to becoming the great southern soul stylist that he unquestionably was, the young James (and his early Goldwax label mate O V Wright) had been a member of the Hummingbirds in the early 1960s, so these three sensational sides were something of a homecoming for him. I'm certain you'll agree that, collectively, they provide a wholly appropriate way to close this very special CD. And if all this good stuff wasn't already enough, ACE are delighted that - in addition to all the unissued sides and alternate takes of familiar tracks - to also bring you a cover shot of James, taken in Memphis by Tav Falco in the second half of the 1970s, that has never been published before.ACE are always getting asked if there is any more James Carr material in the can. Sadly, after this release, the answer seems to be a firm and fast 'no'. Of course ACE would release James Carr CD's 24-7-365 if they could, but save for one or two more (very similar) alternate takes of existing masters there'd nothing new to fill 'em up with. If this CD really does close the door on James Carr's studio recordings, then it closes it in the most soul-satisfying way possible.
