THE IMPRESSIONS - COMPLETE A and B SIDES 1961 - 1968 ('Complete As And Bs' collects, chronologically, one of the best runs of any 60s group, soul or otherwise. Many use the word genius with a wild abandon, yet surely if there is one who deserves to be labelled as such, and who rarely is, it is Curtis Mayfield, a unique man in music. Mayfield was gifted with the pipes of an angel and took the rafter-raising spirit of the church, with its uplifting & hopeful message, and combined it with an indelible songwriting craft to create sublime spiritual soul music that carried his sermons of civil rights and equality to the masses. Listening to his group, The Impressions, on this selection is a truly spiritual experience: its like witnessing the birth of soul over and over again. From the eerie, atmospheric Gypsy Woman in 1962, Curtis Mayfield's gorgeous falsetto floats over a collection of all-time soulful greats, including US no.4 hit It's All Right, the civil rights anthem People Get Ready, and northern soul stomper Can't Satisfy. THE IMPRESSIONS THE IMPRESSIONS / NEVER ENDING IMPRESSIONS (These two 1963 and 1964 albums are contained on this the first of five CDs that will comprehensively cover the ABC-Paramount recordings of the fabulous vocal group The Impressions. In their various guises, the group scored 133 (yes, that's not a misprint!) US R&B chart singles and 85 on the Pop chart. Led by the charismatic singer, songwriter and guitarist Curtis Mayfield, the group also included Fred Cash and Sam Gooden (and, for the first album only, Arthur and Richard Brooks). In 1958, the group had backed Jerry Butler such recordings as his mammoth hit For Your Precious Love (No 3 R&B, No 11 Pop). Mayfield continued to work with Butler as a musical arranger and guitarist but in 1961, The Impressions signed with ABC-Paramount and cut the sultry, Latin-tinged Gypsy Woman. It achieved classic status reaching the charts at No 2 R&B and No 20 Pop.The songs that comprised the first album The Impressions collected early songs from 1961 and 1962 and the subsequent year's sessions, including their next big hit It's All Right (No 1 R&B and No 4 Pop). It also defined the Chicago sound of soul - smooth, cleverly arranged vocals, light dramatic orchestrations and subtle but compelling rhythms. Now tied up with the other co-founder of the Chicago sound - Johnny Pate - Mayfield and The Impressions cut their first complete album Never Ending Impressions, a key album from that soul era. The sound The Impressions created influenced not only American and European pop balladeers (The Walker Brothers, among them) but it had a great influence on Jamaican music. I Gotta Keep On Movin' supposedly influenced Bob Marley when writing the reggae classic I Shot The Sheriff. A message from the keeper of the Kent vaults: Kent originally issued these albums on vinyl as KENT 005 and 008 respectively but they are long deleted. THE IMPRESSIONS KEEP ON PUSHING / PEOPLE GET READY (These two 1964 and 1965 albums (released originally as ABC 493 and 505, respectively) are the second of five CDs that will comprehensively cover the ABC-Paramount recordings of the fabulous vocal group The Impressions. In their various guises, the group scored 50 (no, that's not a misprint!) US R&B chart singles and 39 on the Pop chart. Led by the charismatic singer, songwriter and guitarist Curtis Mayfield, the group also included Fred Cash and Sam Gooden (and, for the first album only, Arthur and Richard Brooks). In 1958, the group had backed Jerry Butler on such recordings as his mammoth hit For Your Precious Love (No 3 R&B, No 11 Pop). The sound The Impressions created influenced not only American and European pop balladeers (The Walker Brothers, among them) but it had a great influence on Jamaican music. I Gotta Keep On Movin' supposedly influenced Bob Marley when writing the reggae classic I Shot The Sheriff. Keep On Pushing/People Get Ready (CDKEND 130) contain two of Mayfield's most telling and timeless performances - Amen and People Get Ready - plus the first socially-aware Mayfield composition to enter the Top 10 - Keep On Pushing. People Get Ready is a stunning song. It combines the intensity and vision of early gospel music with the new assertiveness of Civil Rights and it went on to become one of the movement's greatest slogans. Elsewhere, the group are content to be nothing but oh-so-cool! (check out Talking About My Baby). They still do even that better than any other group from that era. A message from the keeper of the Kent vaults: Kent originally issued these albums on vinyl in 1984. This release marks their first time ever on CD in their original form. THE IMPRESSIONS ONE BY ONE / RIDIN' HIGH (ACE'S third CD by the Impressions featuring two original ABC Paramount albums on one CD. The first two were THE IMPRESSIONS (ABC 450) / THE NEVER ENDING IMPRESSIONS (ABC 468) - CDKEND 126 and KEEP ON PUSHING (ABC 493) / PEOPLE GET READY (ABC 505) - CDKEND 130. The first album on ABC demonstrates that crucial period in the history of soul music where doo wop segues into what we now call The Birth of Soul (see CDKEND 123 & CDKEND 147). Their previous Vee-Jay material shows the same youthful innocence in Curtis' songwriting as many of the songs on the first ABC album. The difference lies in the groundbreaking arrangements created by Johnny Pate. His work with the Impressions and others is recognised as one of the keystones on which uptown soul music was built. The first taste of a change in direction in Curtis' songwriting came with It's All Right, their biggest pop hit. This showed the first inklings of Curtis' famous anthems to black awareness that were to reach fruition in the third and fourth albums with Keep On Pushing and People Get Ready. The second album in many ways reflected a regression from what was to come, with its sprinkling of standards blended in with Curtis' more romantic side, such as the splendour of I'm So Proud. With the fifth album there is a return to standards with just a few Curtis-penned gems. It's as though they were practising for the supper club circuit in case the hits dried up! Thankfully Curtis' songwriting skills were so powerful that the hits never did dry up and his songs are still revered to this day. Fortunately Johnny Pate's arrangements are so scintillating and Curtis' unique soaring falsetto so alluring that even the old chestnuts sound great. Sandwiched in between the standards is one of Curtis' most underrated songs Just One Kiss From You. Finally to the sixth album we have a return to all Curtis material with a difference. Here you have new songs such as Ridin' High and Too Slow coupled with many songs made hits by others, now sung by Curtis himself, with lots of that special guitar sound only Curtis can play. In an interview with Alan Warner he explained how he re-tuned the guitar to suit himself as he preferred it to the standard tuning. We have two more original albums to come with THE FABULOUS IMPRESSIONS (ABC 606) and WE'RE A WINNER (ABC 635) where Curtis' full crossover into black consciousness reached fruition and took him on to his famous solo recordings. ABC released a final album called THE VERSATILE IMPRESSIONS which contained a selection of previously unreleased material. We are hoping to release a last CD mopping up all the unreleased material and other sides that did not make it to albums. Full track listing: 01 TWILIGHT TIME 02 I WANNA BE AROUND 03 NATURE BOY 04 JUST ONE KISS FROM YOU 05 I WANT TO BE WITH YOU 06 ANSWER ME, MY LOVE 07 IT'S NOT UNUSUAL 08 WITHOUT A SONG 09 FALLING IN LOVE WITH YOU 10 MY PRAYER 11 MONA LISA 12 LONELY MAN 13 RIDIN' HIGH 14 NO ONE ELSE 15 GOTTA GET AWAY 16 I NEED TO BELONG TO SOMEONE 17 RIGHT ON TIME 18 I NEED YOU 19 TOO SLOW 20 MAN'S TEMPTATION 21 THAT'S WHAT MAMA SAY 22 LET IT BE ME 23 I'M A TELLING YOU) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

THE IMPRESSIONS FABULOUS IMPRESSIONS/WE'RE A WINNER (About the time that the Impressions cut WE'RE A WINNER they were poised to take the biggest gamble of their stellar careers. Mayfield was in the process of creating the Curtom label and the group were about to relinquish the relative security of the giant ABC Records and go independent. This twofer, the last in the series, pairs THE FABULOUS IMPRESSIONS and WE'RE A WINNER. The first is a collection of classic Mayfield songs, some of which had previously been hits for Jerry Butler, Walter Jackson and the Fascinations plus the Impressions own hit singles You Always Hurt Me and I Can't Stay Away From You. Several tracks feature the dark brown lead of Sam Gooden for which this album is something of a showcase, inasmuch as he takes the lead as often as Curtis. FABULOUS also contains one of the lesser known Mayfield gems She Don't Love Me, a great ballad with an arrangement that takes on unexpected directions with superb vocal interchange by the trio. We're A Winner was a huge hit single, reaching #1 position in the R&B charts and #14 in the Pop charts in January 1968. It was their biggest hit for five years. Despite some restrictions on airplay, the song's success proved unstoppable. Recorded just five months before the assassination of Martin Luther King, We're A Winner confidently showed the direction for civil rights to proceed. Whilst the title track articulated the social conscience of young black America, the remaining songs examine that other great liberation, true love. Moonlight Shadows is a poetic sonnet and a reminder that the Impressions were, and remain, unmatched vocally and technically when it came to their rendition of Mayfield's love songs. The trio really had it down and the music that Curtis and Johnny Pate created is still unsurpassed. Nothing Can Stop Me is the only song from their past, made famous by Gene Chandler in April 1965 (reaching #3 R&B / #18 Pop charts) followed by similar success in the UK. Pate's harder arrangement suits the Impressions' tight vocal routine as they deliver this superb treatment, which compares favourably to the original. Romancing To The Folk Song could have been written for Chicago contemporary Terry Callier and acts as a showcase for Mayfield's beautifully understated guitar work, which is particularly evident on this album. When WINNER was originally released it topped the soul charts and went to #35 on Billboard's album chart in March '68, becoming their third largest career album. Kent's Impressions' series brings together the eight classic albums that remain vibrant like primary colours in the development of Chicago Soul to this day. They also trace the amazing development of Curtis Mayfield as an influential songwriter, singer and producer. He and the Impressions would go on to make many more great albums but none better than these. Full track listing: 01 YOU ALWAYS HURT ME 02 IT'S ALL OVER 03 LITTLE GIRL 04 ONE HUNDRED POUNDS OF CLAY 05 LOVE'S A COMIN' 06 YOU OUGHT TO BE IN HEAVEN 07 I CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU 08 AWARE OF LOVE 09 ISLE OF SIRENS 10 I'M STILL WAITIN' 11 SHE DON'T LOVE ME 12 WE'RE A WINNER 13 MOONLIGHT SHADOWS 14 LET ME TELL THE WORLD 15 I'M GETTING READY 16 NOTHING CAN STOP ME 17 NO ONE TO LOVE 18 LITTLE BROWN BOY 19 I LOVED AND I LOST 20 ROMANCING TO THE FOLK SONG 21 UP UP AND AWAY) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

THE IMPRESSIONS ABC RARITIES (OK, so this CD includes the whole of the Versatile Impressions album, which was their last ABC album and may well not be considered their best work. But this is a whole lot more! In fact the first twelve tracks are vintage Curtis, at the height of his composing and musical powers. Almost all of these titles have not seen the light of day since their first vinyl release and several have never been released at all. This has taken a team of ACE, using Peter Burns' comprehensive discography, to piece together the various locations for the tapes - and we didn't have to use one disc dub in the end, although it came perilously close for one title! Here's the run-down, all in matrix number order and therefore in recording date order:- 1. Can't You See. This is the one that went down to our mastering rooms for disc dubbing, just before I had a conversation with Peter Burns, who reminded me that this track was originally on the first album The Impressions (CDKEND 126). Peter once owned a copy of this impossible-to-find rarity, sadly since liberated from his collection in the swinging 60s. This set the tape detectives to work to see if by any chance this track was simply left, unlogged, on the original album master. Sure enough, with due diligence by Lynn Kerman at Universal Studios, there it was languishing as track seven on side one of the original master tape, having been bumped down the track listing by It's All Right. This is one of Curtis' finest performances and, in superb stereo, it demonstrates his unique style of guitar playing that can only be reproduced, so the story goes, by re-tuning the guitar to the black notes of the piano. 2. Love Is A Mystery. This comes from another extremely rare album called Shindig which was released to cash in on the famous American TV show. It was supposed to be a live album, and for all I know maybe some of the tracks were, but this one certainly wasn't. We could have used the original stereo master with fake applause from the original album, but we thought you would prefer to hear this without these fake effects, albeit in mono. No stereo mix without the applause was made. 3. Emotions (Won't You Let Me Cry). This is the earlier version of this song which appeared first on a Charly album. We feature a different unissued take here. 4. You'll Want Me Back. 5. Never Too Much Love. 6. Never Could You Be. 7. (Man Oh Man) I Want To Go Back. 8. This Must End. 9. I Need A Love. 10. You've Got Me Runnin'. 11. We're Rolling On Parts 1&2. When I worked up at EMI in the mid-60s, my colleague Rod Duncombe, then ABC label manager, enlisted my help in compiling a follow-up to the Impressions' Big Sixteen album. We included the most obvious A-sides that weren't on the first album and this left some room to indulge ourselves with some rare B-sides and even a previously unissued title that turned up disguised as I Need You. We've gone better than Big Sixteen Vol 2 here and added two more rarities. As it happens, master tapes for You'll Want Me Back and Never Too Much Love were subsequently lost at ABC and we have used EMI's master tapes, meticulously preserved and logged by Abbey Road staffers. Four of the others have been freshly remixed into stereo from the original 4-track masters. This Must End is the original stereo mix from the US Best of the Impressions LP and You've Got Me Runnin' is the original US mono 45 master. This Must End must rate as one of Curtis' best songs, right up there with I've Been Trying, I'm So Proud and People Get Ready - the highlight of this CD! 12. Don't Cry My Love. A poignant anti-war song written with Oscar Brown Jr. This deserved a better reception than it received on their penultimate ABC single. This is a new stereo remix from the original 4-track master. 13. Just Before Sunrise. 14. East Of Java. These were both recorded for the film Krakatoa, East Of Java, which unfortunately didn't set the box-office alight and resulted in their last single for ABC. 15. Yesterday. 16. All My Trials. 17. The Look Of Love. 18. Thanks To You. 19. Sermonette. 20. Once In A Lifetime. 21. Puppy Love. 22. Bring A Little Water Sylvie. 23. Oo You're A Livin' Doll. 24. Fool On The Hill. 25. Devil In Your Soul. 26. This Is The Life. These comprise the whole of the last session, some of which were released on their swan-song ABC album. They were all recorded on 8-track, which was the only time the Impressions were recorded in this format for the label. Five of them were not released at all, but not because they were of any less quality than those selected for Versatile. In fact Thanks To You is the best of the bunch, and is the self same song Jerry Butler part wrote and recorded back in 1960 for Vee-Jay. This version sports Sam Gooden in his finest Jerry Butler soundalike voice, duetting with Curtis - superb. If you're a Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions fan you will need this CD. It completes their ABC-Paramount story, but better still contains some of their very finest recordings, none of which can be obtained elsewhere on CD. It also sports the impeccable sound you have come to expect from the quality controllers who deliver you The Golden Age of American Rock'n'Roll series. Full track listing: 01 CAN'T YOU SEE 02 LOVE IS A MYSTERY 03 EMOTIONS (WON'T YOU LET ME CRY) 04 YOU'LL WANT ME BACK 05 NEVER TOO MUCH LOVE 06 NEVER COULD YOU BE 07 (MAN OH MAN) I WANT TO GO BACK 08 THIS MUST END 09 I NEED A LOVE 10 YOU'VE GOT ME RUNNIN' 11 WE'RE ROLLING ON PARTS 1&2 12 DON'T CRY MY LOVE 13 JUST BEFORE SUNRISE (FROM MOTION PICTURE EAST OF JAVA) 14 EAST OF JAVA (FROM MOTION PICTURE EAST OF JAVA) 15 YESTERDAY 16 ALL MY TRIALS 17 THE LOOK OF LOVE 18 THANKS TO YOU 19 SERMONETTE 20 ONCE IN A LIFETIME 21 PUPPY LOVE 22 BRING A LITTLE WATER SYLVIE 23 OO YOU'RE A LIVIN' DOLL 24 FOOL ON THE HILL 25 DEVIL IN YOUR SOUL 26 THIS IS THE LIFE ) KENT Special on-line offer for UK customers only - buy 6 or more DVDs/CDs/Videos (or a mixture of both) and we pay your postage!!! |

LUTHER INGRAM - LET'S STEAL AWAY TO THE HIDEAWAY / DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY (The final instalment of Kent's comprehensive reissue of the late Luther Ingram's Ko Ko catalogue pairs his final two albums for the label, originally issued in 1976 and 1977. Recorded in Muscle Shoals, with the same core line-up of musicians used on Luther's earlier Ko Ko releases, they collectively represent something of a last hurrah for quality Southern soul before disco sidelined it. Both of these albums are making their UK debut here. Only one has ever appeared on CD before, in a highly limited edition from Japan. As a bonus, and for Ingram completists, we are also including Luther's second recording of 'I'll Love You Until The End' from his 'I Don't Want to Be Right' album, which we inadvertently omitted from Kent's CD coupling of that album with 'I've Been Here All the Time'. Luther Ingram was one of the most expressive vocalists of his generation. His recorded output was seldom less than first-rate and usually so much more. We're extremely proud that just about all of the best of it can now be found on Kent. Track listing: LET'S STEAL AWAY TO THE HIDEWAY: 1. LET'S STEAL AWAY TO THE HIDEAWAY, 2. THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS, 3. SWEET INSPIRATION, 4. I'M GONNA BE THE BEST THING, 5. I LIKE THE FEELING, 6. ALL THAT SHINES, 7. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND, 8. IT'S TOO MUCH, 9. YOUR LOVE IS SOMETHING SPECIAL, 10. I'VE GOT YOUR LOVE IN MY LIFE. BONUS TRACKS: 11. I'LL LOVE YOU UNTIL THE END (Version 2) DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY: 12. DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY, 13. HOW I MISS MY BABY, 14. GET TO ME, 15. SORRY, 16. TIME MACHINE, 17. DO YOU THINK THERE'S A CHANCE, 18. TRYING TO FIND MY LOVE, 19. AIN'T GOOD FOR NOTHING, 20. FUNNY PEOPLE, 21. LUTHER INGRAM - I'VE BEEN HERE ALL THE TIME / IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT (2 original albums on one CD, 21 great soul tracks in total. Following on from our CD reissues of Southern soul giant Luther Ingram's complete Ko Ko singles, here's the first ever CD reissue of his first two albums for that label, dating from 1972. These two date from 1972. Between them they contain all of his biggest hits for Ko Ko, as well as a number of tracks that only ever appeared originally on the albums. Many people know the song '(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right' through the interpretations of others such as Rod Stewart and Millie Jackson. Luther Ingram also had a #1 R&B / #2 Pop hit with his version, the first issued and the best. Recorded in Muscle Shoals and Memphis and featuring - on a generous number of tracks - the musicianship of Isaac Hayes' band the Movement, this offers a wonderful representation of Southern Soul's golden era and throws the spotlight on one of the finest singers of both his genre and generation. LUTHER INGRAM - I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT - THE KO KO SINGLES VOLUME 2 - The second of two volumes of the complete Ko Ko singles of Luther Ingram takes this great singer's career through from early 1972 to the final demise of the Ko Ko label in 1978. - Among the 19 tracks are Luther's million selling, original hit version of '(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right', its big hit follow-up 'I'll Be Your Shelter' and his recently reappraised Modern Soul crossover favourite, 'Trying To Find My Love'. - All tracks were recorded in the spiritual home of Southern Soul, Muscle Shoals, and the featured musicians include both the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and Isaac Hayes' band the Movement. - None of this material had been available in the UK since the early 1990s. Most of it, in fact, has never been available in the UK at any time, not even when first released in the USA in the mid 70s. - All tracks have been freshly remastered from the best sources, renereing any previous issued of the material sonically redundant. - Another fitting memorial to this suberbly soulful singer-song writer, who died in March 2007. Track listing: 1. MISSING YOU (VERSION 2), 2. YOU WERE MADE FOR ME, 3. (IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG) I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT, 4. PUTTIN' GAME DOWN (REMIX), 5. I'LL BE YOUR SHELTER (IN THE TIME OF STORM), 6. I CAN'T STOP (VERSION 3), 7. ALWAYS, 8. HELP ME LOVE, 9. LOVE AIN'T GONNA RUN ME AWAY, 10. AIN'T GOOD FOR NOTHING, 11. THESE ARE THE THINGS, 12. LET'S STEAL AWAY TO THE HIDEAWAY, 13. I'VE GOT YOUR LOVE IN MY LIFE, 14. I LIKE THE FEELING, 15. I'M GONNA BE THE BEST THING, 16. DO YOU LOVE SOMEBODY, 17. HOW I MISS MY BABY, 18.
