CHUCK JACKSON TRIBUTE TO RHYTHM & BLUES VOLUMES 1 & 2 (Sit back, relax and listen to Bobby Scott, the leader of my band as we pay tribute to the great ones in the Rhythm & Blues field - not to copy, just to pay tribute. That's Chuck Jackson's invitation at the beginning of this CD which combines the albums originally released separately as Tribute To Rhythm & Blues Volumes 1 & 2. And pay tribute they do, with lively renditions of over 20 soul & R&B favourites from the early to middle 60s rather than the somewhat pale imitations that sometimes seemed to fill out the albums of some of Chuck's contemporaries. As Bill Dahl reveals in his notes, Chuck had told him - We just went with my band, we didn't have an engineer. We used Florence Greenberg's son [Stan Green]. We just went in and sat down and did it. We didn't stop. We did it just like we were at a nightclub. Bobby Scott led a band that hailed from Galveston, Texas. He himself played tenor sax and the key players in the band were Chuck's mainstay on the road from 1963 until the end of the decade. Joining him for the sessions that produced the TRIBUTE TO RHYTHM & BLUES were a horn section that included trumpeters Patrick Williams and Willie Cook, trombonist Malcolm Esther, tenor saxist Philbert Lasley, and baritone saxist Clifford Cotton. The rhythm section comprised guitarist Joe L Smith, bassist Douglas McKindley, and drummer Vincent Ruggiero. Chuck earns himself a credit on organ, and Valerie Simpson, then a Scepter/Wand staff writer (along with her partners Nicholas Ashford and Joshie Jo Armstead), played piano and organ. Topped and tailed by Bobby Scott's instrumental Theme To The Blues, the repertoire encompasses songs from a wide variety of artists in the R&B and soul fold. Recorded as it was in 1966, the material obviously reflects the then recently popular sounds. So from the previous 12 months, we have versions of Sam & Dave's You Don't Know Like I Know and Hold On! I'm Comin'; Lee Dorsey's Get Out Of My Life, Woman; Bobby Hebb's Sunny, Wilson Pickett's 634-5789, Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come and the Ikettes' I'm So Thankful. There's a tribute to Satisfaction which clearly owes more to Otis Redding's version than that of the originators and a medley of four 1966 hits the Temptations Get Ready, Robert Parker's Barefootin, Stevie Wonder's Uptight (Everything's Alright) plus the Capitols' Cool Jerk. Songs from the earlier part of the 60s are represented by treatments of B.B. King's Sweet Sixteen, Lee Dorsey's Ya Ya, Gary U.S. Bonds' Quarter To Three, and three selections first performed by female artists. There's All In My Mind, the first hit from Chuck's stablemate and duo partner Maxine Brown, Etta James' Something's Got A Hold On Me, and a suitably masculinized version of The Love Of My (Man) Girl, the great song from Theola Kilgore. Not all the sounds are tributes to other artists however there are three strong sides which were Chuck originals - I've Got To Be Strong, Where Did She Stay, and Every Man Needs A Down Home Girl. This Tribute CD is the latest in Kent's 2-on-1 reissue program for Chuck Jackson's Wand albums. CHUCK JACKSON I DON'T WANT TO CRY / ANY DAY NOW (One of the great voices of early '60s soul, Chuck Jackson is a supreme song stylist and still a big favourite on the Northern soul scene. This CD release brings together 2 of the original LPs the North Carolina singer made for the Wand label in 1961 and '63 (respectively Wand 650 and 654). It includes such hits as Any Day Now (USA No 23, 1962-.-and later a big smash for Elvis Presley) and I Don't Want To Cry (USA No 5, 1961) and many of the songs are written by the great songwriters of the period - Burt Bacharach, Hal David, and Goffin & King. What fans of Chuck Jackson will notice immediately is the much improved sound quality of this release due to Ace's recent discovery of quality stereo masters (1 track is mono only but again with superb sound). CHUCK JACKSON ENCORE / MR EVERYTHING (The New York-based Scepter /Wand labels recorded some of the finest R&B and soul sides of the 1960s. Their biggest star attraction was, undoubtedly, Dionne Warwick (on Scepter) but Chuck Jackson was up there among the very best of the rest. His rich baritone vocals were the perfect focus for the sophisticated uptown New York soul that became the trademark sound of Wand and he enjoyed huge successes on the R&B charts with such hits as I Don't Want To Cry and the stunning Any Day Now (later covered by Elvis Presley). This release puts two of Chuck's original Wand albums back to back on one great CD. Encore was originally released in 1963 as Wand LP-655 while Mr Everything came out in 1965 as Wand LP-667. The albums have been digitally transferred from original analogue master tapes and specially remixed from multitrack for the best sound quality possible and lurking among the many fine titles are such hits as Tell Him I'm Not Home and Chris Kenner's Something You've Got (the first of 3 hit duets with Maxine Brown). Jackson later went on to record for Motown and ABC, but he never reached the heights to which he so effortlessly soared at Wand. CHUCK JACKSON GOOD THINGS (Chuck Jackson has been hustling his own brand of soul music for nearly 40 years, from being a member of the Del Vikings to opening act for Jackie Wilson, to a string of US top 100 hits between '61 and '68 when he went to Motown. LOU JOHNSON - INCOMPARABLE SOUL VOCALIST - BIG TOP RECORDINGS (Lou Johnson cut a CDs worth of great NYC Brill Building and 1650 Broadway soul, mainly ballads, for the rich and successful Big Top label. His work is as good as any singer of the era and he also happens to be compiler Harboro Horace's favourite vocalist of all time; Lou's talents are quite rightly praised to the hilt. On this CD we have every known Big Top recording, including five unreleased acetates and a non 45 LP track from an album that was never officially released. There is the original and a great previously unheard vocal take of Lou's Northern Soul dance classic 'Unsatisfied'. Plus his stunning original version of Roy Hamilton's revered 45 'The Panic Is On' which outshines even that great record. Writers Bacharach and David used Lou for the male interpretations of their great 60s soul ballads which were often hits for Dionne Warwick. Lou's more uncompromising style meant they didn't sell so spectacularly but they were more than the equal in performance. 'Reach Out For Me', 'The Last One To Be Loved' and 'Kentucky Bluebird (Message To Martha)' are taken to another level of artistry and emotion. Unheralded song-writing team Giant, Baum and Kaye, who had considerable success with Elvis Presley, provide the majority of the songs.
