Records is delighted to present the first CD series to collate the singles recordings by Joe Tex from his hit years on the Dial label and their Atlantic licensee, chronologically sequenced, and featuring the A-side and B-side of each 45. On this, Volume One, covering the years 1964 to 1966. Joe was already a veteran of a decade of recordings on King, Ace and earlier Dial releases when producer Buddy Killen took him to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, in October 1964 to record ‘Hold What You’ve Got’. RUFUS THOMAS – CAN'T GET AWAY FROM THIS DOG (Stepping up to the mike this time we have Carla's dad, otherwise known as the 'world's oldest teenager', Mr. Rufus Thomas!! Even in the mid sixties when he had his hits with the various 'Dog' songs, Rufus was a little older than the average soul man. He started in vaudeville in the late 30s, and in fact several of the songs on this set date from this period, like Strolling Beale, A Story That's Never Been Told, Show Me The Way To Go Home and the even older Carry Me Back To Old Virginny. Also from this time comes a novelty item called Last Clean Shirt, concerning the demise of one 'Brother Bill', for interfering where he shouldn't oughta. And talking of 'Dog' songs, (eh!) there are two previously unissued sides in this particular genre. There is the title track of this CD and the absolutely amazing, Stop Kicking My Dog Around, which was surprisingly written by Sam Cooke. Earlier versions of Walking The Dog and Can Your Monkey Do The Dog are included alongside an out-take of Jump Back. There are 3 unissued duets with daughter Carla, and I think that's just about where we came in. Hit it Rufus. RUFUS THOMAS – THE FUNKIEST MAN (Think about music and Memphis - who do you think of first? Rock'n'roll? Gotta be Elvis, of course. Deep Soul? Messrs Carr and Redding surely have that market cornered. Country Music? Hard to get beyond Charlie Rich, really. But when it comes to funk, few have ever put the beat over with more conviction than the late, undeniably great Rufus Thomas. The Godfather Of Memphis Funk - that's what the strap line on the back of this CD says, and that's just about right, too. We still can't believe he's gone, you know. It really did feel like The World's Oldest Teenager had a shot at becoming The World's First Hundred-Year-Old Teenager. After all, Rufus was still out there, putting the 'fun' in funk, when he was in his mid-80s, and doing the Funky Chicken at an age when doing the Times crossword would be the day's major exertion for most of us. As an entertainer, the man had precious few equals. And as a purveyor of undiluted late 60s/early 70s Memphis funk, he had even fewer. Don't believe me? Then take a listen to this CD... The Funkiest Man is Ace's affectionate tribute to one of the true legends of Memphis Soul, and a man whose Stax career ran for over a decade and a half, from the label's earliest days to its closing weeks. It's not a Singles As And Bs, nor is it a Best Of - other Ace/Stax releases have already taken care of business in those departments. What it is, though, is a full-on farrago of funk, with Rufus and a batch of the best musicians Memphis ever produced - I'm talking Bar-Kays, MGs, Isaac Hayes Movement and Memphis Horns here, people! - working up a full head of dancefloor steam on 18 funky sides that, beat for beat, are a match for anything and everything that others from the Golden Age Of Funk could offer in retaliation, James Brown included. OK, so the lyrics and tunes ain't necessarily going to give Bacharach and David any serious competition in the 'works of art' department. That wasn't what Rufus was about, though, and he'd doubtless be the first to point this out, were he still with us today. But they are what they are, and what they are above all is funky beyond belief. What made Rufus Thomas one of the undisputed dancefloor kings of his time was his ability to keep things simple and to the point, and to let the funk do the talking. Here the funk is talking so loud it's almost screaming. Most of you will need no introduction to rampant Yellow Stax club classics like Push And Pull, Breakdown and Itch And Scratch, not to mention some of Rufus' slightly earlier floorfillers like Sophisticated Sissy and Funky Mississippi. And it won't take you long to grow to know and love the quintet of tracks that were originally destined to be part of Rufus' 1975 Stax album that got shelved when the company went under in that same year. I ain't getting older, I'm getting better barks Rufus over the relentless, spartan funk of one of them, I'm Getting Better. Quite so - and much the same can be said for the contents of this CD. Rufus Thomas. No longer the Funkiest Man Alive, that's true. But forever The Funkiest Man as far as Memphis music is concerned. You want proof? Here's your proof.. IKE & TINA TURNER – THE KENT YEARS (As John Ridley says in the introduction to his notes for this CD, Over the last few years there has been more media hype about Ike and Tina than any other R&B artists.... what seems to have been completely overlooked is just how good the music they produced together in the 60s really was. Well, this CD - IKE & TINA TURNER - The Kent Years (CDKEND182) tries to make up for some of that by including many of their strongest numbers made for Kent and Modern Records in the period 1964-67, their most prolific and exciting period. In addition to 45s and album tracks that came out at that time, ACE have included five cuts that are seeing the light of day for the first time for a total 26 songs. During this period of recording, Ike & Tina built up a formidable live revue, which toured the States on a punishing schedule. Showcasing Tina's voice and raw energy in front of the Ikettes, with the band being directed and led by Ike, the revue also had other artists who took solo spots. Featuring predominantly dance numbers written by Ike himself, the revue belted out live versions of songs, most of which had been recorded in the studio first even if subsequently performed and recorded live. In this CD, we are concentrating almost exclusively on the studio recordings, so CDKEND 182 forms the perfect companion set to CDKEND 102 which features live recordings from the duo and the rest of the revue. Between the two CDs you have almost everything they recorded for the Modern Records' Group. So included here are their popular upbeat singles outings such as 'I Can't Believe What You Say' (a Top 100 entry), 'Goodbye, So Long', 'Gonna Have Fun', 'Chicken Shack' and 'Flee Flee Fla', together with their flip sides and other important songs from their Kent albums. There are many other quite revealing sounds here, too. Listen, for example, to the soulful strings on 'Makin' Plans Together' and the Mayfield-inspired vocals on 'I Don't Need'. It's not all dance music either - for bluesier numbers, there's Ike's guitar behind Tina on 'Give Me Your Love' and on Eddie Boyd's 'Five Long Years'-.-and for a kick-back to the duo's Sue sound, 'Something Came Over Me' features Ike's talking response to Tina's singing with an awfully-familiar guitar riff!
