DVD - JOHNNY BOND TOWN HALL PARTY SHOWS (122 minutes of black & white performances most on dvd for the first time, incs..Mean Mama Boogie, Wildcat Boogie, Glad Rags, Barrelhouse Bessie, Drifting & Dreaming, Cimarron, Love Gone Cold, When The Bloom Is On The Sage, Louisiana Lucy, Tijuana Jail, Put Me To Bed, Train Whistle Blues...16 page booklet.. When Oklahoma born singer-songwriter Johnny Bond was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999, many were surprised, while industry insiders and fans with a sense of the music's history felt that it was about time. Johnny Bond spent most of his career on the west coast, so many were unaware how versatile and extensive his career was. For thirty years, he was primarily associated with singing cowboys, first with Jimmy Wakely, then with Gene Autry, and later as a business partner of Tex Ritter. As a composer, he wrote enough genuine classics to be elected to the Nashville Songwriters' Hall of Fame. As a musician, his distinctive bass guitar riffs are heard on hundreds of country hits recorded in Hollywood and Los Angeles from the 1940s through the '60s. As a comedian, his droll sense of humor was perfect for his years as sidekick to Autry and his long string of novelty songs and recitations. As a recording artist, he had eight Top 10 hits. Now Bear Family Records is pleased to present his laconic artistry to a new generation. The songs include his signature hit Cimarron, and his standards like Your Old Love Letters, Glad Rags, and Tomorrow Never Comes. There are boogie-woogie songs; honky tonk songs, country blues...in other words, something for everyone who loves vintage country music. DVD - THE COLLINS KIDS TOWN HALL PARTY SHOWS VOLUME 2 ((live shows from 1959, tracks include: Shake Rattle & Roll, Stagger Lee, Shake A Hand, Sweet Chile, Plain Jane, Blues Medley, By The Light Of The Silvery Moon, Hot Rod, Kissin' Time, Ramrod, So High So Low, The Lonesome Road, Chantilly Lace, Mutt & Jeff Boogie, Hound Dog + more For anyone who enjoys the raw energy of Fifties rock 'n' roll, Bear Family's series of 'Town Hall Party' DVDs are a cornucopia of cool! More footage has turned up than previously believed existed, so Bear Family are happy to present The Collins Kids, Round Two. For those who weren't lucky enough to be in the audience at Los Angeles' weekly TV show, Town Hall Party, in the 1950s, we'll remind you that the Collins Kids were teenage Oklahomans who'd come to Los Angeles in search of fame and maybe fortune. They were high energy, exciting early rock 'n' rollers, underscoring that Fifties rock music was for, by, and about kids. Lorrie's stunning good looks and sultry vocals were combined with Larry's stinging double-neck guitar licks and manic stage antics. They were very visual, and thus better suited to DVD than CD. This DVD showcases nearly every Collins Kids 'Town Hall Party' appearance in 1959. True to the Bear Family tradition, they have offered everything in the vaults. Some highlights include LaVern Baker's R&B tune So High, So Low , the Lloyd Price hit Stagger Lee (the Collins Kids had an uncanny ability at picking great cover tunes) and Larry's blistering guitar attack on Ramrod and the bonus track Mutt And Jeff Boogie with Joe Maphis. Many say that Larry invented surf guitar, and on the evidence here, they're right. Instrumental fireworks between Joe, THP fiddler Katy Warren, trumpeter Cliff Crofford and musically talented comic Quincy Snodgrass. People said they didn't watch country music on TV (but) when it came to Saturday night and 'Town Hall Party,' Beverly Hills would have their eyes on it. A lot of my studio calls came from somebody watching it and seeing me there.' Joe Maphis 1981. Joe Maphis's presence on 'Town Hall Party' made him a guitar legend. As the show's bandleader, his dazzling, flamboyant work was prominent behind other acts and in his frequent solo spots. Watching 'Town Hall,' Ozzie Nelson decided to recruit Joe to back his son Ricky on his first, pre-James Burton Imperial sessions. THP brought Joe studio work including film soundtracks for films like 'Thunder Road' and 'God's Little Acre.' Maphis's THP performances inspired countless rockabilly and surf guitar innovators including surf guitar godfather Dick Dale. Joe's tutelage made Larry Collins of the Collins Kids a phenomenal guitarist in his own right. Now, you can see why the Hollywood elite flocked to Joe. This is Maphis at his wildest, using his doubleneck Mosrite guitar as a musical Uzi. Taken from September 1958 to December, 1959 performances (the show went off the air in 1960) the 21 performances feature: Maphis favorites Fire On the Strings, Katy Warren Breakdown and live versions of his Columbia recordings of Moonshot and Short Recess.Joe Maphis-Merle Travis performances of Wildwood Flower, Under the Double Eagle and Chet Atkins's Main Street Breakdown and a three way jam between Maphis, Travis and Larry Collins Joe and Rose Lee Maphis vocal duets on Billy Grammer's hit Gotta Travel On and Bill Monroe's Molly And Tenbrooks.Instrumental fireworks between Joe, THP fiddler Katy Warren, trumpeter Cliff Crofford and musically talented comic Quincy Snodgrass. DVD - MERLE TRAVIS TOWN HALL PARTY SHOWS (25 black & white performances with his wonderful guitar work, incs..Fat Gal, Deep South, Nine Pound Hammer, Under The Double Eagle, Blue Bell, Bugle Call Rag, Way Down Yonder In New Orleans, Won't You Ride My Little Red Wagon, Sourwood Mountain, Cannonball Rag...16 page booklet No one revolutionized country guitar playing like Merle Travis. He gave his name to an entire style of playing...or picking. He influenced Chet Atkins, and just about every rockabilly guitarist on the planet. There is very little video of Merle Travis in his prime, so Bear Family is very proud to present one of the geniuses of the guitar at the peak of his skills. Guitarists will be able to look at his fingers and try to figure out the deceptive simplicity of his style. Everyone else can just enjoy some relaxed, lyrical, and easy-on-the-ear country music. These 25 performances are a dazzling mixture of songs that Travis learned growing up in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, together with his hits, and even a tune, Main Street Breakdown , by his disciple, Chet Atkins.Very few artists truly revolutionized their music, but Merle Travis did! Country guitar playing would never be the same after Travis, and when young country guitarists turned Travis picking into rock 'n' roll, they invented rockabilly guitar. Scotty Moore, Cliff Gallup, James Burton, and others were all disciples of Merle Travis. After Merle, it would never be the same!
