COOLSVILLE! HITS AND RARITIES FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF POP INSTRUMENTALS (The art of the instrumental as a sometimes overlooked part of pop music history forms the subject of Coolsville!, Fantastic Voyage's latest vibrant showcase of strains which make up the very backbone of rock 'n' roll. A companion to 2010's much-lauded Instroville!, which surveyed the years 1956-59, Coolsville! packs in 50 tracks, including 42 hits, making it another must-have for instro-mentalists. Before surf music took hold in the early '60s, instrumentals had already been turned into an art form, which reached its peak in the 1957-61 period dealt with here. Apart from the names immediately identifiable with the genre the set also nods at soul music's funky instrumental offshoots, while delving into the vaults for the obscurities now expected of any Fantastic Voyage compilation. RIDING THE CURL (It's been said that surfing is the only sport with its own particular genre of music. It sprang up in the years between 1958 and 1961 along the southern Californian coastline; a new lifestyle around which a whole culture evolved. Surf music was inspired by the likes of The Ventures and Link Wray and then pioneered by the reverb-drenched guitars of Dick Dale and a legion of loud, primitive local bands such as the Bel-Airs, whose ‘Mr. Moto' was one of the genre's early anthems. The second half of this set is devoted to Bud Shank's remarkable music for Bruce Brown's exhilarating debut surfing movie, Slippery When Wet. Brown chose a modern jazz scoring because he felt it would be new and different and his judgement was good. The Quartet improvised the music while actually watching the film, giving the musicians freedom to express more clearly the actual thrill of the surfer than any pre-written score. Track listing: 1. Between the mid-to-late Fifties Rock 'n' Roll heyday and the Sixties tsunami of Beat, Folk, Soul and such, on both sides of the Atlantic there was a sanitisation of the vocal talents being hit paraded - when instrumental recordings provided a more exciting antidote. They could be studio sessioneers vamping under an alias, backing groups stepping to the fore, established soloists or newly formed combos. In the USA it was the Pop chart that most reflected a noticeable blip towards instrumentals during 1958-62, with acts such as Duane Eddy & The Rebels, Johnny & The Hurricanes and The Ventures breaking big. But instrumental recordings had always been part of the Country and R&B landscapes as well, so there was a wide variety of styles and sounds on offer, featuring acoustic & electric guitarists and keyboard players, honkin' & mellow saxmen, even bass men and drummers given their spotlight.
