 - but first read Daniel's comments on how he made his Telstar Mega-mix:

Joe Meek's original TELSTAR was apparently never mixed in true stereo, so I have done that here using various tricks of modern recording. First, Pro Tools was used to clean up and restore a mono copy of the tune pulled from my clean American vinal LP. I then added some Pro Tools plug-ins to spread the mix out into stereo, with phasing adjusted to make the main "synth" melody subtly appear to come from the left and the guitar interludes appear to come from the right.

I love the electronic effects at the beginning so much that I isolated them and then extended them, playing them forward as Meek originally recorded them, then cross fading into the backward version of them as they appear at the beginning and end of the Meek's original mix. By adding a duplicate mono track of the effects to the stereo effects tracks, I was able to add some automated panning to the effects track as they progress.

By using his compression techniques, Meek obviously intended TELSTAR to be a "powerhouse" tune, but the overdubbing he was forced to do with his limited equipment muddied up the "presence" of some of the tracks, such as the harps and percussion, so I added new performances of the harps, high-pitched rhythm ticks, and the bass track to not only clean up the
presence of those parts, but also restore and maintain the powerhouse quality of the tune. Much EQing of all the tracks was done to add to this "power" aspect also.

In addition, Meek could overdub his tune only so many times before the technical quality would suffer too much. So there's only one male voice singing the main melody an octave lower in the last verse of the song. I added several more tracks of male voices, mixed low enough to not stand out too much, to give the part a more "choral" effect in keeping with the powerhouse quality of the song.

All this was carefully mixed in true stereo in a delicate balance designed to maintain the power of the original song without overwhelming it, and from the initial reactions I've gotten about my mix of the song, I did manage to achieve that balance.

I only wish Joe Meek was here to hear it and give me HIS reaction.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it
